We just used our half forwards as half backs and played less forwards. At most bounces I noticed, but no diamond. Etihad is too small for the diamond to work. You could play a triangle with three players, otherwise you'd get caught out on the outside too much.

Just on this. I couldn't work out what our press was doing yesterday at St Kilda kick ins. How many times did St Kilda simply have a free player all on his own on the opposite back flank. They got out at least 3 or 4 times this way. We usually cover both sides of the ground pretty well, but there was literally no one within coo-ee of the player each time. We were either trying something different and it failed miserably, or we were simply horribly slack. I don't know which one is worse.

I've been banging on about this since the Brian Royal days - whilst the coaches can take some responsibility at the end of the day it is the players responsibility. Whether they are inexperienced or not skilled enough or plain just work hard enough - the coaches can't get the pill and kick it for them.

Seriously?

Richardson sure gave his side plenty of help after 1/4 time. Showed them exactly what they needed to do to win the game.

See, other coaches do it.

I find it interesting that Rawlings is the only surviving coach from previous administrations. He must have done something right.

Our defence was rock solid the last couple of years, and got us through some tough times. Then we lost Frawley, Dunn and Garland are struggling, and we have changed the way we play this year from defence first, to an attacking mindset. Put all this together, throw in key injuries to Salem, Lumumba plus Melksham being ruled out of play, add some really inexperienced players in Hunt (who has been excellent mind you), Wagner, OMac and Frost, and you get a defence that is struggling.

This is a new defence, and frankly it worries me. Not enough brute strength, not enough solid one on one defenders, only one experienced tall, the best user of the ball has a thyroid issue, and the rest have played 10 games together. It's little wonder we're chasing Hurley and Hibberd, when Jetta is our most in-form defender. Frawley's loss has been massive, and we have failed to cover that loss.

Yeah well if you play OMac you are going to get Rag-Dolled every time!!

Maybe it's time for Wellman to return.

So we do have a defence coach?  Cleaning up the defence was supposed to be Roos' project for year 1, wasn't it?

If it's not the coach's fault then who's is it?

It's no-one's "fault". It's just the way it is. It's a bit like saying "who's fault is it that we're not at the top of the ladder?"

For the rest ... players past it, injured or suspended: Lumumba, Salem, Frost, Dunn, Garland, Terlich, Melksham.

What's left? A Casey-level back-line, which can just about hold their own As Long As Those Further Up The Field Do Their Job - which as Jack Viney pointed out on Sunday, they didn't:

"You start winning and everyone gets away from their roles and tries to get a kick and a touch. It breaks down the whole system."

Our defenders need to make opposition forwards accountable and run forward. Just how Geary kicked 2 goals playing on Hogan.

Seriously ?

I looked at the stats and Richardson was held possession-less for the entire game.

I have said that the coaches hold some responsibility. And I believe that a coach like Neeld had absolutely no cut through what so ever. But to suggest that at times this year the defense has worked well and other times it hasn't is the coaches fault ? You are letting the key stakeholders off the hook - that is the players. Pretty simple for me - when the midfield does not work hard enough defensively ( or is constantly second to the ball)  and most importantly the ball is turned over your defense is in trouble.

Next Monday I will list all games and source of goals as each week there is one constant - Turnovers. Most goals each week come from turnovers. Is turnovers the fault of the coaches or the players ?

2024 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc.
