Gysberts, for example, was a poor recruit because he wasn't a contested bull and he didn't have the right attitude. No amount of development would have made him a star, IMO.

I'm in the it takes good recruiting and development to make a good player camp.

I think what I'm saying is that, to PaulRB's original point, just because players look good in their first year or two doesn't make them good players. 

They are just good young players until they're good older players, or not.

When it first started it was for the 1st year player (subject to the qualifications of age and games played) that was likely to be a future star.

It has morphed into a best first year player and IMO is a bastard of an award. If you want to award the best first year player then get rid of the stupid weekly nomination as the criteria for eligibility. Perhaps have a weekly award and then award the rising star to anyone that fits the age and game criteria.

Histroy shows it is virtually impossible for anyone nominated after rd 12 to win it. From memory this has only occured 2or 3 times and rd 15 has been the latest. Someone nominated in round 24 can't win it. So the reality is it is the best first year player that is nominated by round 12. Stupid.

Well done to Oscar... but Hunt was far better. Far better. 

Oscar missed too many easy targets and was helping double team a cripple. 

Hunt was defensively sound and thrusting us forward. 

Robbed!

Interesting that Fox Footy's AFL Today recognise the rise of Hayden Hunt in a little feature they just did on him, but the AFL's judges do not.

I'm hoping that over the next few weeks he put's in some blinders for the sake of the team anyway.

Hunt will miss out again this week. Maynard and Phillips from Collingwood should be in the box seat. 

The award is a farce if Hunt doesn't squeeze in a nomination in the final 2 rounds. His year has been 100 times that of Phillips yet he'll most likely get the nomination this week on the back of 1 decent game. 

Waiting for Hunt to get a last round nomination and a top 5 finish.

Kid has been amazing and deserves a nomination for consistency alone. 

Watched Mills closely on Saturday as I barracked for the Swans. He is a gun. So composed and such a great user of the footy.

Rioli got the nod this week.

Daniel Rioli is the nominee for this week. Would make a bet that his last name helped with the nomination considering Hunt and a couple of the youngsters from Collingwood arguably had better games.

It's funny, Hunts probably been our most consistent youngster but no nomination this year, and yet we have four nominated.

Anyway, bigger fish to fry for this team.

Probably the most curious thing about Hunt's non-nomination is that he's got all the traits you'd think they'd notice: speed that he uses both ways, commitment to the contest, loves a running goal, and blonde good looks.  

It genuinely staggers me that the rest of the comp aren't fawning over him.

he's excellent at spoiling when he is giving away quite a lot of height to opposition players too.. just a really good player. came outta nowhere. stoked. and that post-game interview robbo did with him just showed he's a good kid and understands footy. fingers crossed he has a good off-season and an uninterrupted 2017/rest of his career. who cares if he gets a nomination (although it is clearly ridiculous he hasn't). he's already one of our most dangerous weapons!

it's just plainly stupid that only 1 player can (and must) be nominated in each round.

if there are 2 (or 3 or more) outstanding examples in a single round then nominate them all. if none then no nomination. it's not that hard.

Me too - he closed down a marking contest with someone like Casboult on the weekend, he came from miles back and spoiled a bloke a foot taller than him. Did the same to Peter Wright a few weeks ago. He's a genuine spoiling defender, as well as a running, goal kicking one. 

It's astonishing he's not more widely known, let alone praised.

Know its not much but Sam Lansberger of the Sun has him in his 22 under 22 team. He is starting to get noticed by the media (which helps with the nomination), we are just short on weeks. There are a few that havent got a nod yet and while I think that Hunt has the most runs on the board of the players left, he'll need a 20+ disposal game to get there.

It's why the award is a joke. The nomination process is flawed. Just have a weekly winner but with everyone eligible to be in the running to win at the end of the year.

Happy to let my bias shine through.

Hunt has been far better than many who have already been selected.  I have to concede that I didn't see the Richmond game, but Rioli's 16 disposals must have been superb to beat Hunt's 16 disposals.  Rioli kicked 2 goals, whilet Hunt kicked his trademark running goal, had numerous exhilarating runs through the middle and took two contested marks.

My suspicion is that Hunt has fitted in so well people assume he's not a first year player and therefore ineligible.

Of course, I realise that whoever does the nomination would actually know that he's eligible...wouldn't they?

Hunt routinely gets name dropped on the Foxtel shows when Melbourne's progress is discussed, as well as on 3AW and SEN. I think the media and footy public have definitely noticed the difference he's made.

Hopefully for his sake he gets recognised in the last round. It's been unlucky that there has always been a player or two to make a case ahead of him for a nomination each week. As I said earlier, I think he's had the most consistent year of any of our nominees, including Petracca. It would be odd for him not to get a nomination on that basis but it matters little in the overall scheme of things.
