I don't think asking for some sort of "what's required fro him to get back" is unreasonable guys.

The fact that we don't see/hear it for Dunny would again appear to add weight to the theory that his papers are signed.

I would bet my bottom dollar that the coaches have let Dunn know exactly "what's required from him to get back".

To my mind Dunn (and Grimes) are our two defenders that haven't really shown improvement in their game.  I think of our 'established' defenders and their games:  Matt Jones must be doing some really, really, good things to be selected for every game this year ('til injured).  Jetta has added new strings to his bow: a great 'side step' and ability to attack.  Tom Mc has shown AA form at times. Garland is getting the hang of attacking football.  H is playing the attacking back role required by the game plan.

Dunn's (and Grimes') improvement seem to have stagnated relative to the rest of the defenders.

Edit:  Thinking a little more about this, M Jones and Jetta are two of Roos's real success stories.  Two players of apparent limited ability and deemed NQR by observers (before Roos) have become solid, reliable, first pick defenders.  As much a credit to them as it is Roos.

Axis i'm pretty sure if Omac/Frost are up to playing their role down back (many would say poorly outcome wise) in a zone situation then Dunny is capable of, and more than likely, doing the same.

Dunn is capable and none of those things you mentioned are really important. But being capable is different to actually doing it.

I am capable of baking a chocolate cake. But if my boss asks me to bake a chocolate cake and I keep on making bicycles then my boss probably won't trust me to make him a cake for a while.

In the same way, Dunn is capable of playing a role in our defence. But he didn't do it when required and now needs to show the coaches that he can be trusted to do it when required.

No idea what's going on within the club in regards to Dunn and the refusal to pick him on the back of playing well at VFL level and also on the back of two average games from O-Mac.

Dunn's form in the VFL has been serviceable but not outstanding.

I feel annoyed and frustrated that Roos hasn't come out and said anything about what it is Dunn needs work on. You hear about it when others get dropped. Garland, Watts etc.. As a member and supporter of the club, I think it's important we know what's going on when things of this nature occur. Especially given that it has now been several weeks that he has been overlooked.

The club doesn't telegraph all of the internal workings. I have been told previously that the club communicated very well with the players about what is expected and what they are doing both right and wrong. Dunn would know what he isnt doing

The selection of Frost ahead of Dunn has me even more dumbfounded given that Roos has yet again owned up to 'not having made enough changes' as well as admitting a 'lack of experience' in his boring post-match presser. Considering Garland, (our most experienced defender) is out with injury, one would think Dunn would be a direct replacement given the like-for-like experience and also Dunn's VFL form. (Which is again something I consistently hear from Roos). What msg is this sending Dunn?

We can only assume Dunn is not following coaches instructions. If he won't play the plan that they want him to play then he won't get a game.

I've heard contradicting statements game after game during this season and the general theme after losses appears to be, 'we could have done this or that better at the selection table'.

It's not good enough. It's actually pathetic.

Agree wholeheartedly. There doesn't appear to be a plan B

I'm not sure what Dunn's done to be done but he's done. Done it all himself has Dunn !!

Still far convinced about Matt Jones. I still rate him NQR and a candidate to be delisted along with Terlich, Newton, Michie and a few others

Matt Jones finished 4th in the BnF the season before Roos arrived. And there's no way he's a "first pick defender".

Experience and good form? Who would that be ... (no, it's not Lynden Dunn).

I'm always intrigued about why some supporters want an explanation from the FD as to why a player isn't in the side.  You guys can't work it out for yourselves?  He was given a chance and fluffed it, and clearly didn't play the role he was brought in to do, hence why he is overlooked for other players in the short term.  Why do you need the club to tell you this, and why is it our business anyway?  No doubt Dunny will have been told what they weren't happy with and what they want to see from him before he is selected in the side again.

If you can't work that out on your own then I don't know what else to tell you.

I have no doubt that is the case behind the scenes with all players Lucifer and would be very surprised if this isn't the case. I was under the impression (maybe a false one) that the club writes a review of the player's and their progress at Casey. What the club is expecting and how they are progressing sort of thing.

Axis are you aware of what the role was that he was expected to play but didn't?

Wise, as with Axis, are you aware of the role and what he hasn't done to be overlooked or pushed out of favour by any chance?

I don't know about first pick defender but Matt has picked up his game on last season for sure.

Had him ranked 29th to Round 18 last season. This year (to Rnd 10) ranked 11th. A fair jump. I wouldn't put him in the class of Terlich or Michie this season.

Of course not Rusty, but that is beside the point. As the FD have mentioned on numerous occasions, for us to win games every player needs to fulfill their role in the side. It's clear then that Dunn did not complete the role he was given, and not completed it to the point that he has been banished to the VFL. It's not hard to work that out.

I had a look at the Club's Annual 'Heartbeat' booklet and for Dunn, Roos said:

"He showed last year - and what we're looking for again - is consistency.  He's showed he can play some really good footy as he did against Tom Hawkings.  It's really now about him grasping what we want him to do with regards the game plan and making simple decisions.  When he does that, he's a very good player.

Can Roos be any clearer on what Dunn has to do to get a game!?

So while his form may look good in the VFL, the big questions are:

- Is he consistent (in the AFL games he has played this year)?

- Does he grasp the game plan?

- Is he making the simple decsions?

- Can he play 'good footy' when there is no 'power forward', like Hawkins, to match up against?

Obviously the coaches think 'No' to all or most of those questions.  What more do people want to know?

Edit:  The booklet was issued during the pre season, so Dunn has known for a long time what he needs to do.

Good get lh.

Dunny has always been  a favorite  of mine but he clearly has been  unable to adapt tp the zone defense.  That was dead obvious  against  the saints.

Garland also struggles with but unlike dunn is slowly getting it

Along with Omac (who i rated marginally ahead on the day), Garlo was the worst of our key (tall) defenders last week. Bleeding goals out the back against mediocre opposition is hardly a sign that our defence (all of them) is slowly 'getting it'.

Gadzooks....can i have whatever it is that some d'landers are on here!?? 202-Up-in-Smoke-quotes.gif

Perhaps illustrating the role to be filled by hurley

Just thought I'd bump this up.

This morning, on Gameday, Gawny said that the biggest spray he's every heard was from Roosy, after Dunny bombed a torp from a kick in - might have been tongue in cheek, but it seems that Dunn is not doing what he's asked to do...

From all reports from the Casey match, Dunn has done a hammy.

The key part where this theory breaks down is how poorly O Mac (his main competition) is playing.  But maybe that's the role he was brought in to do.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
