Google chromecast for the AFL app

Recommended Posts

The AFL 2016 season is fast approaching, I am trying to find away to transmit the pitcher from my IPhone or IPad to my TV.

I have heard that the app will not mirror on Apple TV any more as Testra have stopped it from happening.

Does anyone know if it is still possible to mirror the app with a Google Chromecast?

Apple TV works for me, it didn't before 2015 but does now.

The quality isn't great, but it's watchable.

just run hola or a vpn, and buy a season pass to watchafl.afl.com.au. streams in hd - it's a little bit behind the real time, or even the time of the foxtel go or afl live app, but quality is outstanding thru a pc.

only a titch more exxy than the afl live season pass too.

Please dont run Hola. Have a look into their unethical practices that were revealed last year and choose a real vpn provider

Hey Lucifer,

You're cooking if it is a Samsung phone as well.  My new S6 came with an app called Quick Connect which just mirrored my phone to my Samsung smart TV.  (Watched some of the vision I took as the Intra club on Friday...).  If it's not a Samsung phone - I had a quick look in the Play Store.  First one that came up was "Samsung Smart View".  Varied reviews.  Might be just a matter of playing with some of the mirroring apps to see what works. Hope this helps...

Many thanks Stephen247!  I have a Samsung smartphone (with 4G) and a Tablet (uses home wifi) so will try both with the two apps you suggest. Cheers.

On a related note, I have a standard 'bigpond' modem which is ok for pc/tablet but a bit rubbish for TV.  So does anyone know if a modem should be a minimum capacity/speed to avoid live telecast dropping out or slowing down on a TV?  Or a recommendation for a good modem would be useful.

You can mirror what is on your Android phone through the chromecast if your Android version is over 4.1 I think (Jellybean). You download the chromecast app, open it, click on the 3 horizontal lines icon in the top left, and click "Cast Screen"

What is on your phone will then show up on the telly if you have it on the correct hdmi input.

So then just open the AFL app and play the game and it should be right to go. I do it all the time, quality isn't amazing but definitely watchable

I have a sub to the AFL app on my iPhone which is supposed to share with my iPad but it won't.

Dors anyone know how to contact the AFL Telstra folk to get help?  I can't seem to get help with this anywhere.

I'm thinking of doing this this year.

When you say 'watchable', how big is the TV you're using? Obviously the bigger the TV the worse it will look. I've found screen casting is very hit and miss. Native chromecast compatibility is pretty much flawless in every app I've used, but clearly the AFL will never integrate this because it would [censored] off foxtel.

Also I assume the sound is still coming from the phone and isn't being cast to the TV?

BTW does anyone else think it's completely moronic that we can't just buy an AFL subscription that lets us watch it on whatever device we want? I'd love a native TV streaming app :(

I'm never buying foxtel. Ever. $50 per month to watch 2 hours of footy a weekend? No thanks.

How about Google chromecast people??

Yes this is possible (did it for the old man last night).

On your mobile or tablet: You need to have the "Chrome Cast" app installed , then open it and click the navigation button in the top-left. Click "Cast Screen".

*You should now see a mirror of your phone tablet on your TV.

Now click the Home button on your tablet and open the AFL Live app and play the game. This will allow you to watch the game on your TV, whist it is running on your mobile or tablet.

You need to download the AFL app on your IPad and put the same log in details into the AFL app as your IPhone. If you don't a log in on you IPhone AFL app then you need to register a login. Plus you also need to make sure the Itunes account is the same on both devices.

Sorry mate, didn't realise you were using an Ipad. I was able to do it with both an Android tablet and an Android mobile, however didn't have any Apple devices handy at the time to test.

Try this app (Video & TV Cast for Chromecast) for your Ipad and let me know how you go:

I don't think Foxfooty streams over Foxtel Go.

If you're lucky the game you want to watch will be on Fox Sports 3, which I think Foxtel Go does stream.

Basically Foxtel isn't allowed to stream AFL to mobile devices, as Telstra has paid for those rights. It's a stupid mess and consumers suffer.

Another issue for me is how 'tablets' are defined in the rights deals. The Telstra AFL app will work on android and ios tablets, but not windows tablets. The simple reason for this is that if they allowed windows tablets to stream, then people could also do it with normal pc's, which they don't want. Personally, I think if I own a tablet, I should be able to download the AFL app and watch it like on any other tablet.

Yeah i agree, its [censored].... i don't understand firstly why the AFL don't do that with there AFL LIVE and sell rights to foxtel... They would still make a mint.
and secondly surely if you are paying for it that is all that matters, how can they dictate to people the size of the screen they want to watch it on.
And no one in the media or radio want to talk about it or put pressure on the afl to fix it

I think our telly is a 37" so not too massive. Yeah it'll never be awesome as I think I read somewhere the maximum the footy is allowed to be streamed is 640x480, another demand by foxtel I assume.

The sound is cast to the telly as well.

If you want to give it a try the nab cup is free on the app if you sign up. You do have to enter credit card details though so just delete them after you sign up so they don't charge you once the regular season starts.

The free code is NAB2016

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
