Round 1 Team

Featured Replies

Jetta I Dunn I Garland
Salem I T. McDonald I Lumumba
Vince I Viney I M. Jones
vandenBerg I Hogan I Kent
Garlett I Pedersen I Watts
R: Gawn I Tyson I N. Jones
IC: Frost I Grimes I Oliver I Bugg
E: Harmes I Stretch I Kennedy

This is not my preferred team, but a prediction.

Lumumba will play NAB 3 and will play round one.

The sooner Brayshaw, Petracca and Trengove come back from injury the better.

Agree with this team. ProDee, who would you have Brayshaw, Petracca and Trengove replace when they are fit and ready to go?

Unless Frost improves this week I can't see him making the round 1 side.  Hasn't been good enough to warrant a spot as a defender, forward or back up ruckman.  He's been out a long time and maybe needs more games to prepare.

Can't believe so many had him penciled in for the side , hadn't seen nearly enough of him.

What's the story with ANB? Is he injured or is he on the outer.  Thought he looked ok last year but unsighted so far.

Very good question. I hadn't noticed any training reports saying he's had significant injuries or been in rehab.

Just outside the best 25 or whatever we are picking at the minute, i reckon he'll play against the Saints.

I just want to see Petracca play! Doubt he will play round one though

Frost won't play on current form. Lumumba will have to have a good one against the saints if he is to play round one.

End of post-match presser. Frost is now playing Howe's mysterious forward role from last season.

Well it is 26 in the squad, and about 6 are injured, that puts him outside the the best 32 or so doesn't it?

Really been impressed with Matt Jones so far. Wouldn't be surprised if he breaks into the round 1 squad. Wouldn't mind a Hulett or Weideman get a game in NAB 3 alongside Hogan and Watts up forward and let Frost play as a backman.

This is the team I posted in the OP way back towards the end of January.

FB:  Garland. T Mac. Dunn

HB: Salem. Frost. Jetta

C: Vince. N. Jones. Stretch

HF: Kent. Dawes. Brayshaw

F: Watts. Hogan. Garlett

FOL: Gawn. Viney. VDB

INT: Hames. Kennedy, Tyson, Pedo.

With the first two NAB games out of the way and a few injuries, revelation of form and niggles uncovered, I would make the following adjustments to my R1 team.

FB:  Garland. Dunn. Jetta

HB: Salem. T Mac. Vince

C: M Jones. Viney. Grimes

HF: Kent. Pedo. VDB

F: Watts. Hogan. Garlett

FOL: Gawn. VDB. N. Jones

INT: Hames. Bugg, Tyson, Stretch

In a team like this I could see us stacking runners on the bench to cover the limited rotations and to try and keep the grunt in the midfield. I see a lot of time on the ground for Gawn, Pedo and Dunn.

I don't expect Lumumba or Dawes to be Match fit for R1. Brayshaw is a chance to be there and if so, he replaces Grimes and Grimes drops to the bench to replace Stretch. Petracca or even ANB may put their hands up if they get a run in NAB3 or the Casey praccy games. Frost will not get in the team on present form and will need to run into form at Casey.

Disappointed that you are going against the pundits ( and recent form) in not selecting Oliver!

To be honest, I had him in and out of the team a few times. I can see that by the end of the season he may well be a fixture there. He will get a run very early and I can see the possibility of him continuing his run of form in the next NAB or in the Casey preseason games to make his inclusion in R1 irresistable. At this stage I would be inclined not to have him there R1. I think there will be a lot of team management throughout the season with the changes to the interchange rules and the fact that we have a relatively young group of players that are still trying to build proper capacity to endure a complete season. We need to build a list that has not only depth of talent but also the endurance to carry us through the season.

2 NABs down, 1 NAB to go.

FB:  Garland  Dunn  Jetta

HB: Salem  T Mac  Vince

C: Tyson  N. Jones  Bugg

HF: Kent  Pedersen  Watts

F: Harmes  Hogan  Garlett

R: Gawn  Viney  Brayshaw

INT: vandenBerg  Oliver  Grimes  Lumumba

E: M Jones  Michie  Kennedy  Frost

Kennedy is a likely inclusion as part of the new mosquito squad, but I'm not wholly convinced as yet. Same with Frost. Likely but has not put forward a strong enough case for mine. Matt Jones is right on the periphery which is a big jump from where I had him previously.

I like Stretch and ANB but maybe the coaches are taking a more cautious approach with them.

Assuming Brayshaw's availability, VDB instead for a bigger body starting off in the guts. I think Baryshaw one season off starting on ball.

Oliver, Bugg and Kennedy all in my R 1 team after that game. Will be interesting to see if Brayshaw comes up.

Goodwin said in his after match presser that Brayshaw should be able to play for Casey this week, same as AVB and Dunn.  I'd say if he plays and comes through unscathed then he'll get a gig for Round 1.

FB: Jetta Dunn Garland

HB: Salem  McDonald Bugg

C: Tyson   Viney  VB

HF: Watts Pedersen Kent

FF:  Frost  Hogan  Garlett

Foll: Gawn  Vince Jones

Int: Oliver Brayshaw Kennedy Harmes

Assuming that all of the players above are fit, I'd be surprised if this wasn't our round 1 team.

So, three preseason wins, one Casey to go...

B: Jetta - Dunn - Garland

HB: Salem - T McDonald - Vince

C: vandenBurg - N Jones - Bugg

HF: Watts - Pedersen - Kennedy

F: Kent - Hogan - Garlett

Foll: Gawn - Tyson - Viney

I/c: Brayshaw - Oliver - Frost - Harmes

Emerg: Grimes - O McDonald - M Jones

Frost stays in my 22 as he offers a chop out in a number of positions.

A bit disappointed not to see more of ANB and Stretch this preseason.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
