Brisbane did well trading Redden a year before he became eligible for free agency. I thought that Selwood and Redden are both on par. I can see why the WCE chairman sees why Selwood is worth a first round pick as compensation.

I can't.

He's tripping balls.

Quite laughable to think West Coast expected a first round pick for Selwood. Like, seriously? Not only did you make no attempt to retain him, by the end of the season he wasn't even in your best 22.

How is that worth pick 18?

Clubs will start to trade players with currency under contract more often in future seasons. Selwoods currency dipped this season.

Selwood has had better seasons. I wonder what his price at the trade table would have been 12-24 months ago? Maybe Wc would have got more than this year's compo.

I guess we will never know, we can only speculate what he might have been worth.

Selwood has played 25 games across the past two seasons, averaging 14 disposals a game this year. The chances of WC getting a first round pick for him were Buckleys and none.

Presumably Geelong are paying him a decent salary, otherwise there could have been an argument that he was worth a third round pick.

Suckling will be an interesting case. Multiple premiership player, but hardly a star. I assume he'll be a second round pick as well, but anything is possible.

The same thing happens every year. As we all know it all depends on where you finish on the ladder, which I feel is fair as it protects the clubs who are struggling at the time.

If the Eagles had finished last they would have received pick 19/20 for him which would've been slight overs. It really is just the luck of the draw and where you finish, they would've been better to trade him at the end of last year for a better pick (which is what Roos has spoken about).

If he's such a 'gun' worthy of a first round pick, why didn't they match the offer? Then they'd be required to trade and maybe get something better.

I think they shot themselves in the foot, you cant not play a bloke in finals, essentially declaring he's not in your best 22. Then jump up and down when you get a lower form of compensation. Some suggest he wasn't played in finals because they knew he was leaving, even if this is the case its still their own fault. I also believe the contract offered to Selwood was of a high enough dollar figure for the eagles to think it would trigger band 2 compo (end of round 1), and probably would have been if we hadnt have gotten away with daylight robbery for frawley last season. Game has changed.

Exactly

He averaged 15 odd disposals this year and barely made there best 22 when he played

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
