Pick 16. I haven't heard this one.

Thanks Angry.

So we give up Howe for an improvement from (currently) #24 to #16?

Horrible deal.

Maybe. But not if (say) #6 and #16 gets us something we want that #6 and #24 won't. What we do with it will decide how good or not the deal is.

And upgrade of 8 picks in a rubbish draft is massive unders for Howe, regardless of what the on-trade could be.

I don't think they will do it anyway 'stuie'...if Freo want either Bennell or Jetta then they will need to use that pick.

edit: not to mention McCarthy

If you were chasing someone (big fish style) and the deal to get it done was #6 and Howe, you'd do it.

How would this be different (assuming that this is the plan)?

edit (sorry #6, #24 and Howe)

Barrett claiming the Dockers are offering Cam McCarthy 700k per year

They must know Jesse is just a pipe dream for them

Doesn't make any difference. A player's worth isn't on a sliding scale based on "what ifs". A slight upgrade of picks is in no way good enough to get rid of Howe. If it was an upgrade of 24 - 16, plus something around pick 30 then you're getting closer.

Well at the moment, both McCarthy and Hogan are contracted. I'd like for them to be able to snare McCarthy so that they lose interest in Hogan, but at the same time I would enjoy seeing GWS hold him to his contract. Young players are becoming far too entitled these days.

As I said: it depends what is done with it. An upgrade of 8 spots on it's own isn't something I'd consider good trading, but if it is used to gain something we really want then it is.

*shrug*

You don't like it on the face of it. I'll wait and see what happens after the dust has settled.*

*assuming that this deal isn't the figment of a journos long lunch

where does #16 come from. freo's first round pick is #18.

so #24 -> #18 is even more marginal

Hawthorn's pick is ND18.

Coz they won and all...

fair dinkum?

well there you go. i always presumed it was based on the minor premiership (at end of home and away)

I actually thought this until last year when I found out. Just shows how long it has been since that has been an issue for us.

The earth is round(ish).

And our 2nd round is currently 25 because GC has an end of 1st compo pick at 19 so currently that upgrade deal would be 25 > 16

Is that a prediction/idea? Or where are you hearing that?

I'd say the voices in his head have told him that, at least that's what I'm being told by mine.

Anything else Melbourne related discussed? Any further news on the Chris Dawes rumour for example?

The Toump trade seems like one that would make sense, although I'm probably in the minority who would be slightly disappointed to see him go after only a few seasons on the list. Still felt there was something there to work with, but if the club feels there isn't then I'm happy to (begrudgingly) back them in.

The pick 16 thing could see us get balic and weiderman, forward and a mid would be a great get

Hogan could do both knees and start taking lifestyle advice from Ben Cousins, Harley Bennell, and Brendan Fevola, and other teams would STILL be interested......

When people say "rubbish draft" they're usually referring to depth of the draft past pick 30-40, not the quality of top 20 picks.

How do you know it's a rubbish draft?

In this draft the talent doesn't look that great at the top end to me.

I'm only going on watching a few of the games but the talent is in next years draft and that's why smart clubs won't future trade out of that one.

Yep, apart from the academy players, there's no real stand out mids, so I could easily see us downgrading pick 6.

I'm not just talking the mids, some of the highly touted talls don't look so good either.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
