Buddy's mental health issue

Featured Replies

Is this a serious post? Following you earlier post re the black dog (http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/39087-buddys-mental-health-issue/?p=1154493) I'm seriously having trouble understanding where you are coming from.

people who are really not well ,compared to people who think the world owes them like clarke and buddy ,i hope they get over tripping over their egos and walletts. To know and be one of the forgotten people is hard i got back to real life again after a hard lot of times ,but it was worth it ,hope buddy and mitch do well, bathing in their wealth from doing nothing

Good luck to him. None of us know the background or the reasons so it's stupid to make comments and criticisms without the full story.

Bottom line is one of the best current players will be missing this week and possibly for the whole finals series because of a medical condition, compassion and understanding should be shown.

Mental Illness doesn't discriminate. I work in the field and feel the utmost respect for Lances's public admission.

People raging about the contract I could generally accept, however through working in the field I cannot accept this mocking behaviour.

I'll repeat mental illness does not discriminate. I feel sympathy for Lance and wish him all the strength in the present and future.

I hope he connects with the important people in his life and feels better.

All the best Lance.

So you are saying that the black dog is based on income? You are saying that the likes of Clark and Franklin are faking because they are on large incomes? If that is what you are saying and if you believe it to be true, you have some serious issues of your own.

no you are wrong its about their attitude and mind set.but money in an unwell situation gives you false security, fact.I believe as a victim of mental health problems that mitch and buddy are spolit batts

But you have absolutely no idea about their personal circumstances as you are not involved in their personal lives and are not privee to what is going on in their heads. How do you know they are spolit brats? On what do you base that? Provide some facts if you are going to make such assertions. Maybe you have experienced mental health issues... if that is really the case, then surely you would be aware that it affects everyone differently. Do you think the likes of Kurt Cobain, Robin Williams etc were all spoilt attention seeking brats as well? Just because, as you claim, you were a victim of mental health issues, that does not qualify you to judge everyone else who is aledgedly suffering mental health issues.

And if you are bringing Buddy's attitude into question, then you would be as wrong is you could possibly be... he has put in maximum effort for most of last season and this season... he is in a team that has just made the finals again and unlike Clark, is in a position where he could once again reach the pinacle that all players aspire to... why would he turn his back on that if he wasn't in a bad place?

I think it's the opposite.

Players under-performing due to injury or otherwise compared to their contracts have huge stress put on them. Buddy has still done well this year but he's missed games and hasn't been at this best and last year he carried Sydney in a similar (yet different) way to Clark carried Melbourne in 2012.

It's why I dislike the contracts given to Scully and Boyd. Way too young and way too much pressure for young guys. No one at age 20 needs that money so don't give them that burden.

Agree OD, if Hogan leaves after two flags, he'll have my begrudging blessing...

Hogan is seriously going to leave after our 2nd flag?? Unforgivable !!

good

I know nothing about this, but I'm prepared to jump to wild conclusions...

I think he wants to be a woman.

That ten year deal is looking poorer by the day.

I am sure that the AFL, the paragons of integrity, (draft, draw, finals scheduling, three strikes policy, PEDs, tanking, MRP and tribunal etc etc etc) will find a way that Sideney will not have to suffer too much.

Looks like the old saying 'money can't buy happiness' applies too Buddy too.

All too true. Can buy lots of other stuff, but not happiness.

Seriously????? This has only just come to light, yet apparently Buddy has been suffering for quite a long period of time (years)... it only came to light as people began questioning his demeanour etc. An explanation was required. Do you think he went out bragging about having a mental illness? As I said, just because you may or may not have suffered some kind of mental illness, that DOES NOT qualify you to judge others as you of all people, should be aware that the black dog bites different people in different ways.

Robin Williams and Kurt Cobain were pocketing the sort of money that Buddy and Mitch could only dream of having... your arguments hold about as much water as the pasta strainer in my kitchen.

The seizure report interests me. There are any number of possible causes besides epilepsy. It's possible to bring them on through high stress levels which can be associated with a number of psychological issues, or just being stressed. Then there are physical causes, blood sugar, illness etc. I do wonder exactly what brought it on for him.

You can not be serious.

Mental illness can hit anyone. You think the rich and famous are immune from having chemical imbalances and such in their brain?

Incredible

Agree totally, I think some people unknowingly mistake the difference between circumstantial depression and biological depression.

Bad circumstances can make anyone feel down, sad and even depressed but our moods generally change subject to improvement in our environmental factors (Job, relationships, stress etc....)

People like Wayne Schwass, Nathan Thompson and now potentially Buddy Franklin feel depressed for no reason other than biological factors, their great environment (Million dollar player, engaged to a model etc...) make no difference to their outlook on life.

And to be fair to people casting assertions, people with mental illness are lot more likely to use outside sources (Drugs, alcohol, gambling) to ease their emotional discomfort then people unaffected by mental illness. It's an unfortunate cycle that way.

A lack of empathy from some on this board isn't surprising but an unfortunate trend I'm seeing a lot more in society lately.

All true, but I take it you know or have treated Buddy to be so confident it is depression he is suffering from. Not sure his condition has been revealed beyond the term mental health, which could be many things, including anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar and, of course, depression. Give the guy a break and stop diagnosing him on the internet.

So, Sydney agreed to a multi-year, multi-million dollar contact in the full knowledge of this problem. That suggests to me that the issue is resolvable and perhaps just one of unfortunate timing.

(The alternative explanation that Sydney are idiots doesn't match with their consistently smart decision making.)

Maybe the right wording is 'manageable' .

if he is worried about something it could set it off.

He does suffer mild epilepsy it was reported... but it was also reported that there is no link between the epilepsy and the mentalk illness that Buddy is suffering.

http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2015-09-08/swans-confirm-franklins-seizure

maybe... maybe they haven't found a link yet? but they're related in that both brain related, so they're close in that alone.

but one things for sure, relaxation helps heal. stress helps kill.

In Caros article she says it is anxiety he is suffering from. The fit he had triggered it again and it needs treatment. Makes sense from what we have heard so far.

I wouldn't classify epilepsy as a mental health issue unless I was a Dr from the 19th Century in which case i would apply leeches to his forehead and prescribe a strong course of Opium.

Epilepsy is purely a physical problem(yes I know it affects the brain but not the mind per se).

The question is why does he get the seizures?

Longmire is spinning this a tad.

That is so daft that it is not funny. When you try to say any illness is "purely" something, you open yourself up to ridicule. Vulnerability, triggers, recovery all involve more than any narrow definition of "pure" physical.

In my experience trephining to let out the evil spirits is the way to go.

according to the hun's front page it is buddy's "demons". we cop it as usual

maybe an old fashioned exorcism is in order

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
