FAREWELL JIMMY TOUMPAS

Featured Replies

So moonshadow what part of this do you wish to continue!?

The dud selection by one M Neeld??

The fact that as a number 4 pick he was shocking?

The fact that the footy dept clearly, CLEARLY thought that he was not going to make it?

The fact that I was proven corect with my appraisal??

Im moving on Next !!?

No you're not!! Next!

So who wanted to swap pick 3 for Hogan? Neeld? What about Viney & Kent? Surely if Neeld is to be "blamed" for Toumpas he should also be thanked for Hogan, Viney and a possible decent player in Kent ... Matt Jones was in the same draft - who picked him?

Anyway, it's all academic anyway because the drafting system we have is flawed and is a bit of a lottery. Toumpas was a standout junior and like many other standout juniors, he just hasn't been able to make it in the AFL (so far)

I've an inkling that Jimmy will have a reasonable career at Port but I suppose time will tell us whether that will eventuate. There's plenty of average footballers or even below average footballers in the system who will continue to get played in plenty of games.

There's just not that many genuine A & B graders in the system. Outside of the best teams, the other clubs all have an abundance of C & D graders on their lists ... plus, there's also any number of "project players" in the system (1st, 2nd & often 3rd and 4th year draftees and all the rookies)

Those doubting the above only have to look at our own list (more so our lists from '07 onwards) Then there's the lists of Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast, St Kilda and Brisbane ... there's not too many genuine A & B graders in amongst those 5 teams.

The talent pool is already quite thin and we're apparently getting a shallow draft this year to boot.

No you're not!! Next!

I hear Pt Adelaide memberships are available !! Maybe you should purchase one!

As I have said movin on, Next!?

I have no affinity to Toumpas or Pt Adelaide picket. But you're like a stuck record in so many ways. Moving on? No you are not, next!

As a melb supporter.. Its annoying to see another high draft pick give us nothing.. Almost looked like the toump was about to turn a corner, maybe if the ball didn't sit up in Montagnas hands we would of praised him for a miracle win? But not to be.. Looked like the kid cpuldn't relax at the dees and enjoy his footy. Hope he gets something out of his career at Port..

Credit where it's due, he spoke very well on SEN this morning and seems like a genuinely likable guy.

He's always spoken well Clint.

The thing I found interesting was that during the interview he mentioned that he spoke with Port mid year.

I didn't think this was allowed but then again nothing surprises me anymore.

Maybe this mid yr conversation contributed towards his form.

No hard feelings from me with the Toump. At the end of the day he has to look after his future with his footy.

Meanwhile Jeremy Howe can get fkd.

I doubt that. I think his form tailed off due to concussions in the VFL

It's funny how people think.

Howe - Low draft pick, played 100 games and gave us some return at the trade table. (F'off)

Toumpas - High draft pick. Spoke to a rival club mid year. Played like a sack of spuds when he got a game. And we got a sack of spuds as a trade. (All the best)

I keep hoping that this won't bite us in the bum, but just thinking of him shat his dacks in front of goal and fluff a handball in the last quarter against GC and I'm reminded of just how inadequate he was as an AFL footballer. Nothing against the kid and played more AFL games than all of us combined, but he was awful. Can't see him playing more than 100 games.

I wish Jimmy all the best, but not to become a star. That would compound a double mistake. I am still struggling with the first one.

You are safe.

Hogan was a no brainer, as was F/S Viney. Many supporters at the time were desperate for Melbourne to do that deal.

I give no credit to the psychopath whatsoever.

We're only a couple of months away from hearing about how Toumpas is tearing up the track over there, etc.

Wish Jimmy all the best. Comes across as a kid with a good heart.

At the time most draft pundits touted him as a top 3 pick....shows the dangers of group-think. The lesson, particluarly with players of a smallish build, is to beware the impact that crook hips has on core strength and therefore pace.

At least we've got a top 10 talent back in Melksham. Look forward to seeing him debut in the red and blue...WADA dependent on which season that will be?

I wonder if there is a Port Adelaide equivalent of Saty over there. What would he ride instead of a scooter though?

But there is a huge amount of revisionism on here. Toumpas was a no brainer at the time too.

( before anyone starts going on about hips - they should look at Stringers leg injuries going into the same draft and Stringer is certainly no mistake)

Aye, however Stringer is a big fella, strong overhead mark etc. Jimmy's a wee man and so pace is all the more critical to him.

Meanwhile Jeremy Howe can get fkd.

Why? Mahoney said at one point that while he was disappointed Howe didn't go to GCS that the fact he ended up at Collingwood allowed us to get Kennedy.

Howe did us a favour as it worked out. We still got pick 3. Why are your knickers in a knot? Hasn't Howe got the right to go where he is happiest.

So much aggro, so little logic.

Given it's Adelaide, a pennyfarthing?

Toumpas was a no-brainer as well according to nearly all the recruiters and the large majority here. Including your good self.

It's all just revisionist stuff anyway ... the shouda, couda, wouda people can bleat and moan all they like but it won't do them any good.

Re Hogan - yes, a no-brainer but Neeld wasn't going to get the benefits of Hogan his way for at least 12 months.

I wasn't a Neeld fan but he should not be held to account alone for any draftees that ended up being poor choices. The draft is an ass anyway.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
