POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 16

Featured Replies

Good games from Dawes and Howe. Good work to the boys. I like the idea of seeing Mac forward. Come draft time we might end up with a Key Defender or 2 instead of a key forward and McDonald could go full time forward. I just don't trust his kicking.

Also - how good is Taylor! And Aish will look good for the dees next year

Dont forget Frost.

Just because it was a low scoring game, doesn't mean it was a bad win. To me it looked like a repeatable style of win based on strong defence and a range of key forwards. Ugly doesn't necessarily mean bad.

It was bad.

What happened?

Sorry, mate. Was out for dinner. He went in under duress and they were saying he wouldn't have played had it not been Maddie's match. I'd say he'll miss next week, then again I didn't expect him to play this year. So he could well come up for next week.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But I'll admit it was the ugliest win we've had since Neeld was coach.

Yes I thought also we managed to actually close the game down in the last qtr making scoring for them more difficult.

I thought our blokes played to instructions and punched constructively.

Jetta's game along with Viney's was a beauty. Van Dam's tackles really solid. He'll be on burial detail next year.

Exactly. But then the comment came from someone who thought Gawn was rubbish last week. Not a great reader of the game.

Gawn was rubbish last week. Hmm maybe more "ineffective" than "rubbish" actually but same thing.

No he wasn't

Burgs, I love your work mate, but seriously, no post match Harmes interview? The kid is living out all our collective dreams, I wanted to see him beam.

Whatever happened to Ellie McKenzie? Did she get dropped from her role once Jordie was dumped from the leadership group? At least she was up and about, Burgs comes across as the most droll and boring man on the planet. I'm sure he isn't mind you, just his delivery is so... restrained.

We kept a team to 4 goals. We were never threatened.

It was ugly, not bad.

sorry bob but was both

Haven't heard Ellie before but i'm happy with Burgo's work

Seems to get along with all the players and his write-ups are usually pretty good

We could win by 200+ points and you'd find a way to make sure you couldn't enjoy it.

I don't take any of your comments seriously.

Haven't seen the stats so I could be completely wrong but I felt we got slaughtered in the clearances.

My issue with that is that Gawn won a lot more hit outs and beat the two Lions, but we still got killed at stoppages.

On that, does blame lay at the feet of Gawn or the midfielders..

We got smashed in the clearances. 43-22.

To me it's a combination of Brisbane's superior midfield (Christensen had 8, Beams 7, Rocky 5) and our midfield getting used to Gawn as our ruckman. He is a different style of playing to the big Russian.

I'll give you a hypothetical version:

Matt Burgan: "I'm here with a fine young man and lifelong Dees supporter after the fine win by the Dees in Round 16 over the Lions, James Harmes, with a fine performance with 15 touches on a fine Melbourne day at the AFLs finest venue, the MCG.

James, how do you feel?"

James Harmes: "Well Matt, I...." [cutoff]

Matt Burgan: "That's fine, thanks James."

Midfielders. We had an off game in the midfield, but our defence more than made up for it. I'm not too worried although I think Gawn can tire easily

We clearly had men back.Including Hogan.

Gawn was still clunking vital marks at the end.

I thought the umpiring was poor today. Brisbane kicked 4 goals, two of which were directly from questionable umpiring decisions. There's absolutely no that should have been 50 against JKH, and Christensen's free kick in the last was marginal at best (his constant staging never helps the situation).

But the one part of umpiring that gets me, and it happened again today (JKH first quarter) is when they randomly ping us for HTB due to the player 'not making a genuine attempt'. Pretty [censored] hard to make an attempt when you have no prior opportunity and the ball is pinned to you. Always against us.

I though we copped a really rough run also

Hogan's deceptively quick. He can turn up at half back in the blink of an eye and take a contested mark like he never moved from the 50

I agree but it's not confined to 'always against us'. It's one of the many inconsistencies in the umpiring. Sometimes forgetting to make a fake attempt to punch away an immovable ball or neglecting to go into fake spasms will get you pinged, sometimes not.

That 50m 'penalty' was just the sort of momentum changer that previously would have caused us to crumble.

Seems to be switching with Tom Mac more lately.

It would've been nice to kick a higher score and it wasn't a game for the ages, but to keep a side to 4 goals is seriously good going.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
