Max king kicks five goals and can't make it into your best? Were they all from free kicks

Don't think they're KC's best. Would love to know if there's a story behind him not being listed there though or if it was just an oversight - 5 goals sounds dominant.

Ventured down today and was good to see them get the win while not playing their best. Credit has to go to Coburg for turning it into an arm wrestle, but Casey certainly missed Neal-Bullen and Michie as they were smashed out of the middle.

Here's my thoughts on Melbourne's players:

Chris Dawes: Competed hard all day and laid a lot of hard tackles which was good to see. Didn't really clunk any big contested marks, but kicked the sealing goal late. Needs another week at VFL level baring injury to Hogan or Pedersen.

Jordie McKenzie: Was busy and kicked a goal in the final term. No major blunders, so not a huge amount to say about Jordie today.

Ben Newton: Was very suprised to see Newton listed in the best. I barley sighted him today, especially after half time. Not saying he was, but at the 3/4 time huddle he almost looked disinterested with his arms crossed. That just could be him though, so i stand to be corrected.

Oscar McDonald: Solid game without being spectacular. Spoilt well and is starting to back his pace at running off his opponent a bit more which is good to see.

Mark Jamar: Was very good today i thought. Dominated his opponent in the ruck and took a few marks and got more of the ball around the ground. Missed a shot at goal in the third term he should have kicked, but i reckon we'll see him back in the team for Darwin

Mitch White: Very good today defensively and offensively! Reads the play well and constantly peeled off his man and set up a number of offensive plays. Was quieter in the 2nd half, but another encouraging display.

Jake Spencer: Solid game from Jake. Managed to take a few marks around the ground and kick 2 goals which was good. Wasn't as dominant in the ruck as Russian was, but he's kept his name up there.

James Harmes: If it weren't for Max's bag of 5, this is the guy we would have been talking about. Was BOG to half time in my book, winning plenty of clearances and getting it on the outside also. Seemed to drift out of the game in the 3rd term and early part of the 4th, howevet when the game was in the balance he came back late winning some clearances out of the middle and driving the ball forward. Was the guy who set up McKenzie's mark and goal for Casey's 2nd last. Another thing i liked about his game was when he did make the odd mistake, he fought to win the ball back and make sure any error wasn't costly.

Rohan Bail: Probably the best game i've seen him play. Was a real link man providing plenty of run and actually used it pretty well. I wouldn't love the odds of that translating into AFL form though.

Matt Jones: Got plenty of it and ran hard, but he didn't seem to have the impact that Harmes & Bail had for me. Seemed reluctant to move the ball quickly and i thought stifled a few potential quick entries in the 3rd term.

Max King: What can you say. A month ago i had this guy penciled in to be delisted. Now he could be anything! Played stay at home forward, but he's agile and kicks it beautifully. Don't think we'll see him lining up for the Dees anytime soon, but he's certainly one to watch.

Also i should mention i though Morris from Casey was great and most consistent over the 4 quarters. Very creative and was our best when Coburg were on top in the 3rd. Hutchins was also great. Was a one man wall across half back, cutting off several forward thrusts from Coburg.

End of the day Casey probably should have won by more. Were 7.0 at one stage, and from there kicked another 7.13, while Coburg kicked straight all day. Thought they were in trouble at 3/4 time, so did really well to fight out the 4 points and end of the day, that's all that matters.

I'll also say for those worried, don't be concerned about Viney withdrawing tomorrow. Goodwin said Fitz has pulled up with a niggle, so Terlich is the carry over player.

I dropped out to Casey today because my tennis team had a bye. It was a strange day - no wind, not even a zephyr, the sun was shining; a very strange day at Casey!

Harmes was very good, in and under and got some vey important centre clearances late in the game.

King was quite impressive. I am intrigued with him. Forwards need to kick goals, not get a mountain of possessions. I would have put King in the best because of this. From memory, at least three of the goals came from contested marks. Another came from work on the ground that a 200cm player should be well proud of.

M Jones was ok, no more. Casey we're getting smashed in the centre clearances when he was in there early in the last.

Newton was ok.

Dawes was Dawes. Concrete hands, for the most part.

Bail was good. Bail is a VFL+ player and will always excel at this level. Unfortunately, he is an AFL- player.

Jamar and Spencer were the two best big men on the ground. Coburg eventually gave up competing in the ruck and concentrated in sharking the opposition hit outs, to good effect.

OMac continued his good work.

36-18 qtr time. Perfect conditions, beautiful ground, small crowd. Egg and bacon rolls sensational.

Texted a picture of my egg and bacon roll to a mate who was out at Windy Hill watching the VFL Bombers. Said the rolls are the best in the VFL. He saw the picture and said they should call it the Grouseburger.

I told the ladies on the BBQ and they were rapt and said they want to copyright it!

Can they do a vegan version for Biff? He's cleaning up his act now.

Lets hope he can build on this game. I think he struggles for AFL level fitness. Watched him battle during preseason.

Yes, as a 20 yr old beanpole ruckman playing his first senior VFL game he struggles for AFL fitness. Cut him a bit of slack FFS. Enjoy his 5 goal haul for what it is.

Dean cox struggled for fitness in his early years. Couldn't run out of sight in a dark night.

To be fair, while I don't disagree with the above statement, they would play majority of their game time in the midfield when they're in the VFL hence the high possession numbers.

When they're called up to Melbourne side they're assigned specific roles, generally defensive forward roles and therefore don't get those numbers that people are expecting to translate from their VFL form.

Defensive forward roles yes but Bail often racks up the lowest numbers of any running/run with player in the team, has little impact defensively i50 and rarely impacts the scoreboard when pushing forward other than the odd rare goal from a set shot.

Jones is a notch above Bail and gets more involved in general stoppage play but still doesnt impact enough to warrant a regular game.

Neither have grown into AFL regulars and will more than likely be traded/delisted at year's end.

KC, do you have any stats on coburg? Interested to see how many touches ozgur uysal (8) had. Harmesy appeared to have a tagging role on him for much of the game.

Max king was very impressive. Especially when it was just him and one other in the goal square. Didn't seem to have as much of a impact when it was as congested apart from that one he kicked off his toe but still awesome to watch nonetheless. Another great win! A few missed opportunities. Straighter kicking and it would've been a much more comfortable victory.

Have to say, from what I saw until part way through 3rd term, King was not much in the play. For a lot of the time, the ball was doing circle work up and down the ground, not getting to the extremities at either end where King was stationed for us pretty well all game.

I am so glad King kicked 5 and I saw a couple of good ones, but for the rest of the game players like Bail an Harmes stood out much more for me, purely on possessions and influence on the game around packs.

With Jamar and Spencer playing he was never going to get a run in the midfield, but that was fine. He is still a beanpole, but since I saw him last year, he seemed to have gained a decent bit of body proportion and (almost) muscle in his lanky limbs. I really expect the full muscle won't appear until the next 1-2 years. Let's just give him time to see how well he develops. He has shown some more potential than I could see in him last year, but he ain't Elvis yet.

Kingy, I want you to hide yourself away over the summer and work on your body like Clubber Lang / Mr T from Rocky III.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
