Cale Morton, Lucas Cook, Jordan Gysberts, Sam Blease need I go on?

I think the assessment of the talent level of those blokes might have been the issue.

At least two of those were selected well above where they were expected to be taken.

And I don't know if we would have been too fussed about the output they gave had they been rookies as opposed to first round selections.

Surely he would have made it at Essendon if he was good enough. They are desperate for mids also.

I'd look at rookie listing Elliot Kavanagh.

Was a gun youngster that never got a run at Essendon. Don't know what else might have been happening behind the scenes, but talent doesn't disappear. Has been in good form for Essendon's VFL team lately, but looks likely to be delisted.

Coming in he was compared mainly to Colin Sylvia.

The prosecution rests.

Haha, don't recall reading the Sylvia comparisons, but if they were referring to his off field exploits then fair enough.

currently watching the swans vs pies...Would Sam Reid from the Swans be a good target? He is 196cm. He could complement Hogan

Not while we have Dawes.

so why still have Dawes then?

Tomlinson took Dawes to the cleaners when they played against each other last year...

Unfortunately Dawes is a bulldozer, but most of the time he just doesn't mark.

doesn't mark.....but does that mean brings the ball to ground? Many see his bringing the ball to ground, ie dropping marks, as his biggest attribute. Strange that.

ohh yes, & I was also a huge Ottens fan, once he started to play better down at the Cattery.

I like effectiveness, talent, & no-nonsense, hard footy.

theres an honesty in that type of footy that no one can escape from. you face it, or your seen to fold.

no more flash & sparkle players please, for the Mfc ??? lets have the Voss's, the Keatings, the Lynch's, the Orange Roughies, the Scotts, the Blacks, the Lapins, the Pikes, the Bradshaws, & elsewhere, the Scarletts, the Moonies, the Selwoods, the Kirks, the Chapmans, the Rookes, the Lings, the Burgoynes, the Hodges, etc...

i don't want to see any more players who just run fast, or just jump on shoulders... I don't want anymore teasers like so many in the past 4 yrs here.

The only ones in that list who are plurals (despite the many inappropriate uses both of apostrophes and plurals) are as far as I know, Scotts and Selwoods

People's thoughts on Stanton?

I think most people think he's rubbish, therefore he's a bit underrated.

Not a world beater, but would fit in our 22.

He is a good player but he is very loyal to Essendon.

so delusional as well as a possible WADA casualty!! Not for me.

Delistings - michie, mckenzie, hunt, Terlich

Should have been traded last year - Toumpas

Will be held onto as depth - bail, fitz, m jones

You would delist Michie ahead of Bail? Madness.

I think Hunt will be kept. Still not physically developed and starting to show something after a bad run of injuries.

Lachie Henderson has officially requested a trade and will not play any further games this season.

what's henderson worth?

i expect blues will want cats' round 1 pick, ~10.

i agree with the sentiment that he's worth around the same as dawes, who was 20 in a far stronger draft. blues shouldn't be expecting more than the cats' second rounder i wouldn't have thought.

would still prefer tom lynch or adam tomlinson over henderson.

Nice move by Carlton...

The Gibbs Cup, the Kruezer Cup, the Schache Cup...

Not sure but isn't there a common thread here? now what is it....ummmm

...and another unrelated question...who is the Chairman of the AFL? which club did he play for? it's some guy that stands for integrity, good manners and ....it's just not coming

Make an offer to the blues for Henderson, would be a fantastic get and with Hogan would make a dangerous pair up forward.

Won't happen he's off to Geelong.

Half of the AFL is off to Geelong. Not sure how they will get all the deals done in 3 weeks!

My thoughts indeed. Seems as though every player who apparently wants out is going down there. Will be interesting to see who actually does end up there, because if they all do (as per media speculation), surely Geelong will be pushing for top 4 again in 2016.

Dangerfield and Henderson are half of the AFL?

I understand Geelong are mentioned in a lot of deals but the trade Henderson is requesting is to Geelong.

You think we should have a dip and Mitch Clark him?

It was more tongue in cheek.

Well I've heard Dangerfield, Henderson, Selwood so far.

I hope we make a play for either Bennell or Motlop.

My votes go to Motlop. Apparently asking upward of 700k.

It seems that among Essendon's 20 uncontracted players there are 5 Free Agents:-

Tom Bellchambers, RFA

Courtenay Dempsey, UFA

James Gwilt, UFA

Tayte Pears, UFA

Brent Stanton, UFA

Jason Winderlich, UFA

Watch the AFL deal EFC back into the early rounds of the draft if some of those guys go and it gives a few 2nd round picks.

What is suppoosedly a shallow draft becomes a lot weaker, especially when you add all the FA's floating around that are likely to attract 1st round, end of first round, 2nd round picks ie Suckling, Dangerfield, Selwood, Leuenberger.

Plus all the Academy players (4/5 in the first round), so on the current ladder our 2nd rnd pick will be about pick 28-30 ie the 28th-30th best player!! Yes, the Academy clubs need to pay the 'draft points' but they are getting the best players.

Can't see a strong case for keeping any but our 1st pick.

How many?

Some clubs don't stuff around getting players.

Don't mind Bell either. He's a big bodied midfielder who can rack up 25 odd touches a game. Knows how to kick a goal as well. He's basically the player Tapscott should've become.

C. Dawes to Brisbane

S. Martin to Bulldogs

N. Hrovat to Demons

J. Toumpas to Crows

T. Lynch to Demons

J. Howe, J. Grimes & Pick 6 to Gold Coast

H. Bennell, D. Gorringe & late pick to Demons

Sign M. Suckling as URFA

Trade in S. Grimley on the cheap

Upgrade A. Vandenberg & J. Harmes

Allow C. Garland to walk as Free Agent (use the cap space)

Delist: M. Jamar, J. McKenzie, R. Bail, V. Michie, A. Riley

2016 - MELBOURNE 22

FB: Dunn, T. McDonald, Jetta

HB: Lumumba, Frost, Suckling

C: Bennell, N. Jones, Tyson

HF: Vandenberg, Hogan, Kent

FF: Lynch, Grimley, Garlett

FOLL: Gawn, Vince, Viney

INT: Brayshaw, Petracca, Salem, Watts

2016 - CASEY 22

FB: ?*, O. McDonald, Terlich

HB: Cross, Fitzpatrick, White*

C: M. Jones, Neal-Bullen, Newton

HF: Trengove, Pedersen, Hunt

FF: ?*, King*, Kennedy-Harris

FOLL: Spencer, ?, Hrovat

INT: Gorringe, Harmes, Stretch, ?

* Equals rookie

Gives us two live picks at the National Draft, plus the two rookie upgrades and then two picks at the rookie draft. I'd be giving 1 year contract extentions to Cross, Pedersen, Hunt, Fitzpatrick and the two rookies King & White. Couple that with M. Jones, Terlich OOC at the end of 2016, we'll have plenty more players available for the chop in 12 months time also.

Hrovat is not a big mid nor does he have fantastic outside run which we need

Dont rate Grimley as any better than what we already have, in fact think Pedersen is far better as a Ruck/Forward type

Toumpas straight swap for Lynch aint a hope of that happening

Suckling when he moves from Hawks will not be anything special without the guns around him, think along the lines of the Malceski scenario

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
