I think for most the glass is almost empty, the glass has been very low for a long time at some stage you need to finish it our top it up.

It's talent as well, though. The lack of talent can't be dismissed when we turn the ball over at will. Why do Salem and Hogan stick out like dog's balls in this side? Intent and effort yes, but also, talent.

The effort has been there in previous weeks. Adelaide, Richmond, you could even argue against Sydney. It dropped noticably against Hawthorn.

I think the effort will return this week, in fact I'll be shocked if it doesn't, but we will again be outclassed in the midfield.

Buck up guys the slashing of wrists since the Hawthorn debacle is getting silly.

Lets be realistic. We won 4 games last year & hopefully can get 6-8 wins this year. We started the season well & showed great improvement. Then injuries - Jetta, Kent, JKH, Viney, Salem, Hogan. Then a number of players badly out of form - Watts, Jamar, Howe, Dunn, Gawn, Dawes. On top of this our better mids N Jones & Tyson both look a bit proppy.

You take effectively 8+ players out of our best 22 & of course we are going to struggle.

Look at poor Stretch - once in the better players at Casey & straight into the Firsts. At the Swans he would need to do this 5 or 6 times before getting promoted.

While last week was disappointing we will continue to struggle until we get a decent, in form group of 22 players out there. I still reckon we can take a step forward & win 6-8 games.

Excuses.

Next year we will clear out some strugglers and bring in some more capable footballers.

We're not in a position to be bagging big names just yet but in another couple of years we will do okay out of free agency.

We need to be patient.

I believe we are on the right track.

We're starting to build the basis of a team.

I don't think we're far from giving a few sides a bit of a shock.

If we play to our best we could win the next 4 games. The problem is the IF. Our best will match it with the Dogs, Port (at the moment) Pies and Saints.

This is reason enough for gloom.. At full strength and in form, we are competitive with every team bar the top 4. But rarely is any team at full strength. And unfortunately, most of the kids with promise are already playing seniors, and there's little else at Casey to get enthused about. Also, there are still question marks on some of our best 22, like Jamar/Spencer, Dawes, Watts and Howe.

We have some players that would fit into any team in the comp. Just not enough of them at present.

Don't think so--- how do you explain our only defeats, 5 , have been by 5 of the top 6 sides.

In the collman race 4 out of the top 9 have been kept goalless , yes 0 Betts--Grimes, Franklin,Rewault and Cameron--- MacDonald. So somebody can play, just not enough. And yes I sat through the excuse on Sunday, all the way through, don't blame the players for half hearted performances when you do the same by running away before the final whistle.

For what it is worth I think we should go as hard as we can to secure a top flight ruckman, they give their mids a running start with positive ruck outs. Great mids get great service from their ruckman. Don't think so, watch Sandilands gift so much clean ball to their followers.

Well for one Hawthorn have improved significantly since then while we had one failed rebuild and are now part way through our second.

I assume you mean round 1 2008? Round 1 2007 we lost to the Saints and Brock McLean wrecked his foot after looking like our next captain in the previous game against the Saints.

The problem is we've copped injuries to the players we can least afford - not in terms of skill but in terms of aggression/effort. Viney, Kent & Jetta and last week Hogan & Salem. We need these guys to set the standard along with Jones and TMac and to a lesser extent VandenBerg and Brayshaw from the first year players. We don't have the depth to cop injuries to these guys - if we lost Howe say instead of Jetta or Watts instead of Kent or Dawes instead of Hogan or Cross instead of Viney or Salem we probably could cover them better than we are.

To cop injuries to all these guts who are important as far as effort and pressuring the opposition is debilitating to a club like ours when the replacements are either NQR's like M Jones, Bail, Grimes etc or kids like Stretch.

This is the crux of it for me. Brayshaw has desire, intent and effort. He is putting some of his teammates to shame. And frankly they deserve to be highlighted for it.

If we had a team of Brayshaws we would be saying 'at least they are having a crack'. The spotlight should be well and truly on the senior players like Howe who has had 8 kicks, 3 marks and 2 tackles in the past 2 weeks. Its appalling.

So all the things you mentioned above were not evident in our wins over GC and the Tigers, or in our darn good performance over in Adelaide?

We've seen it in more than glimpses, but the thing we lack is consistency. We can absolutely do the things you mentioned above, and to say we fail miserably at them is a gross over-statement, but we do lack that leadership to keep us on track and to put those things into place on a consistent basis.

Not saying we will be playing finals, but those assessments are so ridiculously way off.

We live in a 24 hour news cycle, so things are often painted as worse than they are or better than they are.

Interstaters don't get to hear all of the commentary, but a few weeks ago our harder edge was being lauded. "Experts" saw a new and tougher Bernie Vince, while Brayshaw, Newton and vanDemon were revelations in the hardness stakes. They were the perfect complement to Viney, Jones and the out of form Tyson. But things can change quickly on the back of a couple of poor performances.

The midfield is the key. On the days when the midfield clicks we will still have some very good results this year. Unfortunately key injuries will effect us more than seasoned teams, but with Hogan at one end, McDonald at the other and Brayshaw, Petracca, Viney and Salem in between the foundations are most definitely in place.

But the news cycle won't always be to our liking or making.
