That's what worries me. If he'd said from the start that they wouldn't be negotiating until after the CBA, then that's fine. As things stand, they've been at it for a few months and either the club aren't fronting the money (unlikely) or he just doesn't think he wants to stay.

I'm tempted to open up a separate thread - a Jesse Hogan panic room - where those who have misunderstood this latest development can gather and stress each other out, leaving this thread for its intended purpose, which is to celebrate the great man and marvel at his feats. 

If you've just come onto this thread today, you've missed a lot, but maybe not much at all....

Incidentally, the Herald Sun follow-up story to the Age article quotes the Melbourne-based rep from his management agency and has a more pro-MFC spin to it, for those reading the tea leaves.

Sounds fine to me!

The filter feeders of the football media have a story to create and run.  With the promise of more frenzied feeding over the season.

The media feeds off unsigned players so much. Let's just let the year play out not to put too much on the boy's shoulders now and Journos will continue to put the food on their table. Or desk, which is probably where they eat majority of the time.

This is the first time I've seen a player with this much speculation on their next contract with a further two years to run on their current one. He only just signed an extension last year, why would he sign another when he's not even halfway through the last? Footy media are such vultures.

It is actually good for MFC that the media are heaping pressure on. I want to see players have to squirm when they say that they are putting contract talks off until the end of the year. Players should just come out and say they are leaving. The current system incentivizes them to lie, that surely cannot be a good thing. If I were a player I would be straight up with everyone and say, no, I am leaving. McCarthy did it, only thing is, he wasn't out of contract, and then pulled the 'golden ticket' (mental health card).

Hogan still has two years to run though, there's absolutely no need for this to even be a story let alone them 'put pressure on.'

I agree. There is no need for the media to do a lot of things. In this instance I don't mind it though, because if Hogan is going to sign, he will. If he isn't going to sign, then he will have to squirm for the whole of 2017, and I wouldn't pity him. But in saying that, I think he will sign. We have the best young list in the competition, and Fremantle will be struggling by 2018. No Pavlich, Sandilands, Barlow, Mundy (most likely), McPharlin, Johnson. Fremantle are in for a whole world of pain, and they will have to fight hard to keep Weller. Bennell is no certainty to be there, and as good as Fyfe is, he is injury prone. I don't see Fremantle being a top 8 side, and I see us being a top 4 side, so I doubt Hogan leaves. Footballers want success. I bet Buddy is kicking himself missing out on the last couple of flags at Hawthorn.

People bag the English premier league but smaller clubs can develop players & sell them which allows them to buy other players to strengthen their squads etc early draft picks don't compensate & are always risky as they may fail.. 

And that works so well that the weaker clubs compete equally every year with the big clubs...

Hogan is a once-in-a-generation player. You don't leave the media and sport hub just to "go home". I suspect his management is pretty intent on him staying in Melbourne, and it appears he is as well.

I think this is very different to Scully or anyone else. It is genuinely in Hogan's best interests to stay in Melbourne.

I am pretty confident he will stay. This is different to the usual "contract talks are off" as he still has 2 years on his contract, and it actually makes little sense to extend it now. If we read the same lines this time next year it will be time to start worrying.

But it does make it even more important that we see some genuine improvement this year. Need 9 or 10 wins minimum.

My immediate thought upon reading the article is that this is probably being driven by Jesse's manager who's giving his client sensible advice in the circumstances.

I harbour no fear about the pull of the West. My concern is more that a club like Hawthorn will have a red hot crack at luring him. Against that, we are a club on the way up, he is mates with all of the future talent on the list, we have the financial resources and coaching acumen to keep him, and we have a narrative to success that no one other club possesses - i.e. the old, irrelevant foundation club which has been the laughing stock of the comp for decades, recruits a band of brothers who transform the club into a professional, hard edged, competitive force that dominates the competition for years to come - it's the stuff of movies. And Jesse can lead that charge. It's gotta be a far more compelling proposition than simply taking over the baton at a club which has won 6 flags in 10 years.

I would've thought the odds are heavily stacked in our favour to keep him. For a very long time.
