Yeah I think we went 11 of the next 12 wins to go from second last to third by round 15 2006.

We did indeed. Started the year 0-3 won the next 5, dropped round 9, then won the following 6 to be at 11-4.

Apparently Melbourne was that awful in 1981 (the year I was born) that the coach at the time, Ron Barassi, wrote an apology letter to all Melbourne Demons members! 😖

I can't find it at the moment. But I know a copy of the letter exists somewhere online. 🤔

It was an awful year SD - we won 1 game, by 1 point.

Don't stress, things will pick up soon, as Ron assures us we're in the market for "some top-name interstate recruits"!

If you look carefully in the top right corner, the number for the changerooms is listed!

Great stuff! A piece of MFC history there.

Ron Barassi was right! But it took 40 years instead of the planned 5! 🤣

Hopefully they had photocopiers back in 1981 otherwise Ron Barassi was signing a lot of letters! 😯

Maybe not. How many members did we have in those days?

Back in 1981?! No idea.

Probably only a few thousand.

I reckon Ron Barassi signed one master copy and the rest were photocopies.

Surely @Supermercado has this if it still exists online.

Hadn't seen that before @Grapeviney posted, but Ron did put a weird ad in the papers before returning as coach.

Barassi

On that note, I'd love scans of any member comms from the pre-internet era. Alternatively, if you just want to get rid of any old MFC paperwork PM me and I'll take it off your hands!

We might have a chance to break this record一"No team have won a premiership from the 4th since year 2000."

Sydney had their chance in 2006, but lost to WC by 1 point in GF.

The irony of this loss is that in 2005 they lost the first week and had to play 4 finals but won the big one whereas in 2006 they won the first week and only had to play 3 and lost.

I was a member then and don't recall ever getting the letter

One more to the list.

Two straight sets in a row , since the new Top 8 system era.

Straight Sets Simon is what all the kids are saying.

Where do we sit on the 'worst kicking year' (behinds to goals) table? Must be close to #1...

Don't you need to add Essendon to 16 from 2000 ?

16 premierships yes and they're in the graphic on 16 from 2000, but they've only won 14 grand finals 😉 Essendon won two premierships without winning a grand final, in 1897 and 1924.

Who else has done that then ? You can only do what the competition allowed you to do at the time.

What is the ruling on GF's then? And that other teams have had an easy Flag/s.?

They're the only two premierships decided without a grand final. They were decided with a round robin (among some other factors), so I wouldn't even say they were easy flags.

Whoops I was thinking semi finals. No QF at the G since 2000 is very sad.

Unfortunately we did create the record of being the first team in the history of the current top 8 system to go out in straight sets from top 4 two years in a row. Sad.
But we did make three consecutive finals series for the first time since 2006?

Edited by deejammin'

We’re not very good at semi finals. 1-4 from the 2002 Adelaide final onwards.

The last time we won a home semi final (ie the higher ranked team) was 1998 V St Kilda.

Was listening to Brayshaw and Brownless on the radio this arvo.
Brayshaw declaring he's "happy the best 2 teams are in the GF."
"Well apart from Melbourne who I dunno what happened but, sheet the bed."

The boys are tarnishing their legacy big time.
From GF heros to chokers.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
