I recall when I was a wee tacker, pretending to be all of Jim Stynes, who would tap it to Glen Lovett who'd pass it to Stephen Tingay, and snag a goal as perhaps, Chopper Lovell, on the family farm near Portland...

[censored] Richard Osborne in 1993 snagged a lazy 10 and stopped an ongoing streak of losing. Of course, Melbourne were always going to be that team.  That is where my MFCCS began.

Anyways, I stumbled across this from SirSwamp.

Now firstly, you'll be glad that we're not top of the list, even without University.

But my mind did drift to... of the wins, that ended the longest losing streaks... how many were Melbourne complicit in?

Anyone care to answer...

I think at least four of the interstate expansion teams belong to us. But I also think we’re of a similar age Onion, so I'll reframe the question. Other than the Sydney game you highlighted in 1993 and the GWS record, no other team has ever broken a streak of ten or more consecutive losses in a match against Melbourne (out of 30 or so instances, with more than half of those vs traditional Victorian teams).  

Woops. That should have read since Sydney, or in the past 30 years. 

maybe not embarrassing but  since the national expansion in late 80s we are the only team have not played an interstate team in GF

We won 11 in a row counting the last 2 games vs GWS and Bombers in 2020.

Its now 10 counting 7 last year and 3 this season.

We don't count practice matches or JLT in AFL records.

I think it's time this thread was superseded by a more positive one, such as "Records being broken by the Melbourne Football Club".

There's our current membership number for a start. Also, does anyone know whether the 12 goal run in the GF was a GF record? (I assume it's been mentioned elsewhere if it was.) Of the 577 AFL players to have a 100% winning record, Bowey has played the most games. And so on.

I was at that Swans match. Pretty sure it was at Doglands. Dreadful.

This thread is a great reminded of how far we have come as a club.

When you look back it has been a good ride. Long may it continue.

Its been a rapid rise from mid range to best. I  hope for lasts for a long long time. Everything is better when we are the best. Just the way it is. Would be fantastic to see the club a sustainable power club like sydney and geelong. Very proud as of now.

 

I was at Dallas Brooks Hall. Waverley and Kardinia Park for the records. 

What we are seeing now justifies everything we did, thought and remembered about 1996. The real supporters always hoped we would be here. The good guys ultimately and gloriously beat the attraction of the dollar. Thats what we were fighting for.

The first match between these two clubs at Docklands was on July 1, 2000 (when it was known as "Colonial Stadium"). The next game at Docklands between the Dees & Roos was in 2007 when the stadium was known as "Telstra Dome". From 2009 - 2014 (which was the last year the two clubs met at Docklands), there was a match each year between Melbourne and North at Docklands when it was known as "Etihad Stadium". In 1993 we lost to Sydney in Sydney and the great Ron  Barassi unfortunately coached the Seans and I think they broke a fairly long losing streak.

We’ve been starved for chances of beating them there in the last 8 years as we haven’t played them there since 2014. 

Gee they gave us some smashings there in our wooden spoon era (not surprisingly)….I sat through them all would be nice to return the favour even if it is 8 years later

Spoke to my mate Stan the Statistician and he said that since the Beginning of Time Melbourne was complicit in none of those streak-breaker games, which would surprise some. Clubhouse leader is Geelong with 5, followed by 3 each to Essendon, Collingwood and South/Sydney.

Two things: it’s good not to be on the list, and Stan needs to get a life!

We haven't beaten North in an away game on a Saturday since round 20 1991. The day Jako kicked 11.
