WAKING THE DEMON

WHERE'D YOU RUN TO

WALKING IN SHADOW'S

WATCH THE BLOOD FLOW

WARNING: A bit of explicit language and a bit extreme for most

Bout time we woke the demon!

Hells Bells was awesome.

To misquote Napolean Bonaparte on China- Melbourne is a sleeping demon- let her sleep for when she awakes she will shake the world- The Demon has just roused for its slumber

Loved the passion and excitement in the group. They rushed in to remonstrate with Shaw after that dog act and celebrated all the newbies first goals. Also the song was sung with great gusto. It's obvious there is a great bond developing between the players - a Roos specialty. Bodes well for retaining players. Add Petracca to that group next year and watch out. I think we can officially say that Hogan and Brayshaw won't disappoint. Can cancel my consultation with Dr Nitschke,

I was going to post 'relax, we've got this' (tongue in cheek) but decided against it not wanting to over use an old joke.

*sigh*

Oh well, I might start a new one using Micky Maltshake as the punchline: I can't see us losing a game this year.

Just arrived back home from today's incredible win. Best time I've had watching a Demons game for some years.

- Jesse Hogan is a beast. Haven't seen a player crashing packs and taking marks like that since Neitz.

- VandenBerg. Where did this guy come from? Barlow comparisons are well justified.

- Nathan Jones was his usual brilliant self.

- Watts was immense up forward. With Hogan and Frost taking the key defenders for most of the game, Watts just about did whatever he wanted. Finished with 3 goals. Could this be his year? (Also how good was that tap to Garlett?)

- Jamar and Garland played their best games for some time. Both hit the scoreboard and were involved in some crucial passages of play.

- Jeff Garlett is a new Aaron Davey. Kicked freakish goals and applied forward pressure in a similar manner to Flash. Will do the number #36 justice

- Viney took on God and won. Looked fresh after a disappointing NAB cup.

- Brayshaw already looks like a 100 game player. Finished the day with 9 tackles and helped set up that Jones goal in the 2nd. Could be a possible contender for the Rising Star if Roos keeps playing him.

Incredible game. Go Dees!

VandenBerg. Where did this guy come from? Barlow comparisons are well justified. Canberra of course

It was just great to Fist Pump in the lounge room

Heretier's Goal came just at the right moment...

I don't think anyone put their head down when we were challenged...

Just got home, the replay is on, victory cigar will be lit soon!

The best thing about today was four times GC came at us and got to within 2 goals and every time we steadied the ship.

I cannot remember us doing that for a long long time.

Anyone think we should have Hells Bells playing every time we take to the field!

I hope so. That was a really strong tune when the team came on to the field. A sense of foreboding for the opposition. Loved it.

I bet PJ is having a little smile tonight.

We can get 45,000 members if the Team plays like that.

It doesn't have to be next year if the Team works hard for each other.

This is what unbridled joy looks like!!

No, that's Watts floating, having had the weight lifted from his shoulders.

Highlights!!!! Who would've thought?

*Brayshaw's contested mark between 2 opponents. WTF!

*Garland's creativity, run and contested strength. Reminded me that he's a bloody good player

*Jesse Hogan taking 7 marks by using his still only 20 year old body. Soooo much upside.

*Jack Viney tackling Gary Ablett like he was a first gamer.

*Ben Newton and Aaron Vandenberg being big, physical and with secure skills.

*Jeffy Garlett making the opposition panicky whenever he goes near it.

*Tom McDonald being enormous in defence

*Jones, Tyson and Cross being so consistent

*HL's steal and run into goal.

*Jack Watts being there for 4 whole quarters, and knowing he's got more to give.

*Jeremy Howe's marking

Two moments that stood out for me from all of the obvious great moments...Salem's mark of a skied ball in the back pocket late in the 3rd quarter, against a much larger opponent...then and I can't recall who his opponent was, but Hogan's mark on the wing where his opponent obviously had the idea of pushing him out of the contest, but in actual fact, pushed him straight into the path of the ball...brilliant!

Also loved the fact that we won every quarter (I think).

As if I care but scores are level in the swans ess game, maybe the peptides are wearing off

Two plays that stuck out to me was the transition after that abblett fumble in the goal aquare

And that h spoil gather cruise to 35 and goal got us our momentum back at the best of times

Now do we all agree that nab cup means sfa all?

just watching the highlighs on the afl site, how good was that goal in the 2nd quarter when howe kick it to garland who played on and got it to jkh who then found tyson in the middle and he ran in and kicked that goal.

I think one of the highlights of today, apart from the win, is Jack Viney slamming Gaz into the turf every chance he got

With hindsight it looks like Roos used NAB to give some established players the chance to play themselves into the team. Looks like Grimes, McKenzie, Bail and M Jones failed that test. Won't be easy for any of them to get back into the team.

60-60 a piece. don't be so sure.

Just out of interest, what's the longest quarter on record? Their last quarter just passed 37 minutes and is still going!

Edit: finished, just shy of 39 minutes.

I did a big "hoooooooray" in my living room along with everyone at the ground. I think my family thought I was a goose, but oh well.

Me and my daughter both screamed out suc Sh it.

Don't forget they only had that opportunity cause Cross was given a free kick against GC cause he went in harder than the GC player.

Was a bs free kick and karma kicked GC in the caboose

Doesn't normally happen that way for melbourne!!

exactly great to see the stragglers can no longer consistently get games week after week standards are alot higher after today

How good was Watts goal from the boundary line in the last (I think).

Freakin all class.

So happy for him and the dees.

Finally we win a round 1 game.

Got to love it when my 4yr old daughter wants to watch the demon players sing the song again before she goes to bed. How sweet life is. Have a happy easter.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons have the Bye next week but then are on the road once again when they come up against the Gold Coast Suns on the Gold Coast in what could be a last ditch effort to salvage their season. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
