AFL - Round 1 (non MFC games)

North are so overrated it isn't funny. They were so inconsistent last year, dropped some horrible losses, but on the back of a soft draw snuck into the 8. Admittedly strung a couple of big finals together, but given there tougher draw this year, I was shocked they were in many people's top 4, and then I even heard that twit Brad Johnson tipping them for the flag.

On paper they are very average, and on the field, not much better. They will finish anywhere from 7th to 14th for me.

With that result, no matter what happens tomorrow, we will be in the top four at the conclusion of round one.

Who'd a thunk it?

Port looked static and inept tonight, and the skills were worse than the Saints/GWS match.

Interesting that the worst games I've seen Port play over the last season were against Freo and us. Do Roos/Lyon know how to shut down their run? Tonight's result would indicate Lyon certainly does, and both our matches against them last year showed that Roos has tricks up his sleeve as well.

That ... or they're just coming into the season half-assed or underdone, neither of which seem likely.

Weren't you listening to Der-Wayne? He was just about creaming himself over both Freo and Port.

Must have missed that.

Was too busy comprehending his comment about Freo and Port being most likely to face off in the grand final.

Shocking wasn't it? Round effen One as he's talking about them as the Grand Finalists! What an idiot!!

Der-Wayne, easily the worst commentator in the Fox stable. Hate to say it, even Brown makes a shocking commentator with his deep and droning voice. Love the bloke, but it's like nails on a chalkboard for extended periods.

North's biggest problem has always been Brad Scott....he does not know how to take them to the next level.

And, I can't stand either Scott...

Gifted a GF.

Neither can coach in my book nor accept an umps decision.

How good is ollie wines!

Send jack over to Adelaide with a blank cheque to bring his mate home, straight swap for jimmy seems a win-win trade :P

Norf and Scott an excellent fit for each other, both whining flogs.Them and Geelong are two teams we owe in spades. Can't wait to inflict some pain on our way past them.

With the Hawks taking centre stage today against the Cats, it's always worth reflecting on this story. How Hawthorn fooled Richmond to scoop Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead, Jordan Lewis in 2004 draft*

Hawthorn fans have been boasting about this coup for a long time and I always thought there was an element of urban myth about how their recruiters went about it, but I wonder ...

In any event, it laid the groundwork for a very successful Hawthorn era, brought about by the fact that the Hawks were poor enough to win only four games that year after narrowly missing the finals in 2003.

* I'll leave it to you to pick the blooper in the article.

Dwayne's hyperbole is absolutely cringeworthy.

Commentating in last night's game he started rubbishing on about how both team's coaches were at the end of an era and their era needed to finish with a flag or people would look back at that era and think it was a wasted era. So he decided that it was "now or never for both teams" during the second quarter of round one when the ball was being thrown in on the outer wing.

So much wrong with all of that, would love to hear an insider's opinion.

He is a disgrace to the game of Australian Rules football.

Dwayne was saying Ken Hinkleys reign is over?

I don't subscribe to fuxtel. Rupert will never get my money

It says we took Meesen with Pick 8 when Adelaide did?

Dwayne doesn't know any better. He's just a complete and utter moron, with arrogance in equal measure to his stupidity.

Some of the lines he was rolling out last night were beyond ridiculous, even for him. "It brings tears to your eyes to have witnessed this". You would think we had just witnessed one the greatest sporting spectacles of all time. It was a Round 1 scrub match that was made close by the poor quality of forward entires and overall skill execution.

Frawley on Clark is gonna look a little weird (if it happens)

Both of them leaving doesn't particularly bother me - can't say I wish either of them well though.

I have no issues with Frawley, he gave us some good service over the years. Clark can GAGF though, soft as butter mentally and I hope his foot gets shattered into powder.

I might tune in this arvo to see Clark get stretchered off and Frawley get worst on ground.

I cant hate Chip, he gave us years of very good footy including a rare MFC AA guernsey . I do think he will regret not staying at the club though and seeing success with his mates though.

And after seeing what Lumumba has brought to the MFC i am now leaning to saying thanks Mitch

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
