He's big enough and possibly strong enough. Today he gave his all and a few times lacked finishing skill and speed to the contest. Not alone there, I might add. Big difference in today's opposition than the previous three weeks which let us get away with it.

Were you there today? I believe my eyes at the G rather than a tv commentator. Like Vanders a lot, good pick up, but he has speed and skill issues that he will work on. If you cannot acknowledge that then you need to take off your rose coloured glasses.

PS. perhaps time to change your profile name....

Repeat speed maybe. Not speed. He's super quick for a man of his size. Easily runs passed some quick players.

Disposal sure. But he makes the right options.

He's a player. If he's only 80% fit then he might be even more than that.

Terrific game today and will only improve the more time he gets to run through the middle. The games against Hawks, Swans and Dockers would only help someone like vanders...looks like he's learned some of his lessons and applied them today.

He is in the top few players for leg speed at the club. Don't you goevery week.? Numerous times he has easily beaten an opponent to the ball in a foot race to open space.

Hardly looks like a first year player out there, looks so composed. Sure he was a mature age recruit but he has really adapted well.

Loving the way he goes about his footy, he is hard at it and his second efforts are brilliant.

Maybe what Mooney means is his speed with the ball in hand. He's really quick to get it. Needs to find the ability to accelerate with ball in hand, then steady and kick. That's not easy.

Either that or repeat speed with fitness.

I totally agree he's not slow at all.

He's like a high possession Max Rooke. You'd love to play next to him. I wouldn't mind Riley on the other side of me either.

I reckon he's closer to Chapman, but I can certainly see the Rooke comparisons too.

Adds such a lot to the midfield, and brings others into the game.

So a first year player has imperfections. Big deal! It's his effectiveness that's the thing.

A bloke who has played 8 games, no full pre-season and used to run around in the NEAFL (the TAC cup is a higher quality league).

He's got a tonne of improvement left in him.

Attitude, effort, skill, nous, tackling, time in close, dash - he has it all.

He is the big mid we have been needing. So glad they gave him extra time in the midfield this week, he is a ball magnet who wins 50/50's. Will only get better and better.

Well done Aaron! Keep it up!

Has his contract been extended yet? Surely he'll get a main list spot next year.

Not yet, but you would think that is a lock to happen before seasons end.

Looks like David Schwarz. Plays like Todd Viney !

Keep it up!!

There's a touch of Josh Kennedy(Swan) there , too.Perhaps he learnt from him 2 weeks ago.

On his skill level, i actually think it's better than most give him credit for (or its his decision making under pressure is. Sure he might not be able to lace out hit someone with a bullet, but he gathers the ball, pushes off a would be tackler, gets a meters space with another tackler coming at him and just holds the ball long enough to hit up a target (really well weighted and to advantage in front). Numerous times ive seen him do that and its something i hardly see from most of our other midfielders (except jones) when under pressure/about to be tackled (e.g. Dom tyson). Its wonderful to see. I think normally the moto would be to bomb it forward and he just knows what to do and does it.

He's proof that individuals can impact games off limited pre-seasons for those who continuously make excuses for sub-standard footballers on our list.

He really highlights those who have been on the list for years but who cannot perform consistently.

Vanders has some really solid attributes to his name and is only going to get better as his tank improves.

He just looks difficult to tackle to me, bit of Fyfe or judd about him in that sense

He really caused some concerns among the Dogs. In their desperation to find someone of sufficent strength to try to keep him away from the ball and stop him burying their mids in crunching tackles, at one stage they had Crameri standing him at centre bounces.

its great to hear our boys are finally progressing. I don't get to see the games at all atmo, unless on TV. having just moved, I'm waiting for NBC to be hitched up in another 2 weeks.

so i'm on prepayed mobile broadband, 2 Gig at a time. so I pulled the plug on the internet telecast as my prepayed would not have got me thru the game, without topping up, yet again.

vandenberg has apparently been nicknamed 'the richie' .... come on guys, something a bit better than that? what about 'de` Borg '

Probably my favourite player at the moment. In the video before his debut when Roos told him he was going to be picked you could see the sheer joy and relief on his face. It's great to see that getting a game meant so much to him and he has taken the opportunity with both hands, this is probably a dream that he had almost given up on. His physicality is unmatched in our midfield, Jones and Brayshaw have the same tenacity but not the same brute strength and power. In regards to his disposal, it seems fine to me. Not amazing but it's not a weakness and he plays within his limitations. Will only get better.

He reminds me of Jobe Watson. Big solid and good football brain. im surprised to see someone that big with genuine pace. First chance to see him live was round 1 and in a foot race he ran past Malceski like he was standing still.

why can't Vanders just be himself? Why do we have to give playes a crappy nickname, or try and align them to other plays i.e "he reminds me of..."

He is doing fine cementing/creating his own name in the game!

Human nature Song

Good luck trying to change that one

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
