Thanks C&B, you saved me from doing the grunt work on this which I was planning on doing. I watched the replay last night and noticed that our main midfield 4 was pretty much on until early in the last 1/4. So all those saying jones, tyson etc were "nowhere to be seen" should probably go and watch the 2nd half again and reassess whether or not there were worrying signs with what MFC dished up or not.

I remain concerned. The fact that our 2nd string did virtually f-all once Tyson and Jones were rested for the 2nd part of the last 1/4 is a big worry, should one or both of those guys go down with injury, the season will surely be a complete write-off.

Like a few on here mentioned earlier in the thread, we really did dominate even up to the last few minutes of the 3rd quarter and had multiple opportunities to really sink the boot in with missed chances for Watts (x2) and Viney. Once we let them off the hook they got a few easy goals with the wind and got a bit of momentum which they took into the last 1/4.

Also, I must apologise for my rash judgement of Toumpas's game. I was highly critical when I posted up my match reactions soon after the final siren and still seeing red, and sure he got caught a few times and one short kick coming out of defense led to a turnover and goal to them but he did play pretty well. Hope he really establishes himself and blokes like him, Salem, Kent, JKH, start to push the fringe players like M Jones and Terlich right to the bottom of the pecking order.

It sucks that we are taking on Essendon for our final preseason hitout, it's not going to give us any real idea where we're at as a side going into the season proper. Oh well. You play the fixtures you're given I suppose.

Not at all. I thought it was interesting and it's something that is hard to get a good picture of, but jokingly suggested you should do it all the time in recognition that it must have been a chore to produce.

It only took about 5 minutes actually (albeit only a half), I think I will be doing it more often.. just DL the files so you don't run them through the website.. use the time slider to quickly see when a score goes up 6 points.. jot down who's in the middle

good work,. It shows we are giving guys a run in the middle to see whether they are up to it or realistic options come rd 1. I like it. Not that fussed we were creamed in the second half so long as the coaches worked out what they needed to know....

Who has the ability to sit back watch a game and keep track of this, not to mention all the other rotations. At any given time if you took the time to look right around the field you could find a very different team to the one that started at the beginning of the game. It's amazing sometimes to sit near the interchange and see how many are going on all the time.

I'm sure they have secondary type coaching staff (opposition analysts) that watch the tapes of every game and record all sorts of data, that gets collated in specialist software.. all so they know to a high degree of precision what the enemy is going to throw at us for the upcoming match. They'd also sit down with the players and run them through it, particularly if you are a tagger with a specific midfield job, they need to know how much time each bloke spends in the middle etc This is one of the many areas where you are behind the 8-ball if your footy department budget is less than your opponent.

A friend commented to me several times before the game he was worried about our ability to finish well in this game following a flight to Perth and back last week for our first game of year and one played in 30 plus degree. Our match fitness is hardly back to normal match conditioning. We had a bad let down after our NT game last year if my memory is correct. We are far from travel, temperature, match fit yet. There was so much good in this game there is no need to become alarmists yet

Like father like son. Not silky smooth skills but effort, intensity, and guts cannot be questioned. Never say die. We need a team of jack vineys or at least 21 others with the same attitude.

Viney's biggest challenge isn't the odd skill error, it's becoming an elite runner. Roos, Lyon, Longmire, Hinkley... all of their game-plan's revolve around being elite two-way runners. He still has a long way to go, but he improved his running markedly over summer.

I reckon he gets a bit of a bum wrap from some supporters. Saturday was his first hit out for the season and he'll only improve. Dan Hannebery didn't take the next step until he'd played 50 games and entered his 4th year. Viney has played 33 coming into his third. Hannebery is an elite runner, which is Viney's challenge. Unlike Viney, running has always been Hannebery's strength.

I reckon he'll have a very good year. Importantly, teammates love playing beside a player like Viney. There's no-one better to run out with than someone who'd kill their Grandmother to get to the footy.

I'm very relieved to see that with the passing of (nearly) a day we are hearing the opinions of some more cool-headed customers regarding yesterday's match. There are always going to be your clueless panicky petes such as dazzledavey ("pencil us in for the bottom 3") but it is a good to see this is the minority. As others have mentioned, you only need to see Roosy's presser. There were several occasions last year where he was obviously seething at our performance and making little attempt to hide it. Yesterday showed no hint whatsoever of this. That's because he knows what happened on the scoreboard in the 2nd half yesterday is utterly meaningless.

so sure of your own opinion aren't you, clearly he is not going to publicly panic over a pre season match but would most likely be disappointed nonetheless, the second half was meaningless, the meaning that we dropped off big time and fell over the line

Not to be a stickler for detail but he's played 33 games.

I can see where RL and others are coming from in their reservations, but I have confidence JV will be a quality contributor to this club over a long period of time. He will demand it of himself to improve.
