It seems Cameron has a contract till 2020 and is reportedly a 'million dollar' player.

A continuing trend of potential stars being locked up on big money to go beyond their free agency years. Predict the same for Wines, Hogan and a few others.

Not saying it is good but it is the another downside of free agency.

Clubs paying overs for 'potential' - you're so right.

The pact b

The 'pact' boys starting to come together...

It seems that way, although i think we have done pretty well out of the Giants so far anyway, the took scully, gave us a few compo picks that got us Hogan and co, and then we snagged Frost and Tyson who both look really good.

is asking for one more a bit greedy?

Hogan will be paid $1m+ in 2018 if he stays upright...

It pays to be 6'4 and a talented footy player these days.

Contract trends now are:

2 year contract for new recruit on base $, then

2-3 year contract on very good $ (eg Wines/Hogan/Cameron), then

5-6+ year contract on huge $ (Boyd/Crotchin/J Selwood/Cameron etc and before long Wines/Hogan etc)

The critical one is the 3rd as it locks in a player in the UFA/FA period meaning he will be at the club for 10 years (and even then will still be a UFA). Free Agency has 'forced' clubs into this predicament. Downside for the Club is it takes all the risk re injury, performance etc. Sadly the downside for other players in a team is they get less, because of salary cap.

Hopefully, clubs put in performance/injury contract clauses to manage/balance their risks.

Sounds a bit conspiracy theory ish.. but....

i don't think the AFL were ever going to let all these kids walk out of a club they're already copping heat for, the AFL will be working on getting them to stay

Unreal,

Jeremy Cameron just said he rushed his deal because he wanted to be able to go out fishing relaxed and not worried about it.

haha champion

Are you suggesting there was a time when it didn't RPFC?

The other advantage of signing kids to long-term deals. At that age they tend to be pretty dumb and can be taken advantage of more easily.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
