Players You Respect From Other Clubs

Featured Replies

happy to be proven incorrect but I recall GAJ being exactly the opposite and saying nothing - never committed to the cats - never said he was staying - continually touted the " will discuss at the end of the season - just want to play footy".

Fair enough. I recall Scully trying to say the same thing but having the President having him to dinner and pounding him for information and insisting he sign.

Anyway water under the bridge. Ablett ran out on Geelong and Scully ran out on Melbourne. We got the better end of the deal.

Gary Ablett Jnr and Jimmy Bartel.

GAJ because he's one of the best footballers of all time, yet he comes across as a likeable humble guy.

Bartel because he just gets the job done over and over. He isn't flashy, but he's a smart footballer, he's a good contested mark and great overhead, plays his best footy when it's pissing down with rain and he can just dig in and scrap. He's a big game player too. Love him!

It's interesting - I think a few posters have got "respect" and "love watching" mixed up.

I respect Pavlich, Jobe Watson, Bartel, Sam Mitchell and J McVeigh.

I love watching Judd (in his prime), GAJ and Hodge. But probably love watching Franklin the most.

Never a truer word spoken....

Agree.

Luke Hodge has my respect - goes hard, hurts all in his path, gets hurt in the process....never winces and I've seen him help his opponent up.

I like that.

Travis Boak, too.

Luke Hodge, Lenny Hayes for their will and determination.

This may not go down too well, but I've always respected Chris Judd's outlook as far as not taking footy too seriously, just a game etc.

For me Luke Hodge is the most complete team player in the game and has been for at least the past 5 years. GAJ has been the outstanding individual.

Bob Murphy for heart and soul for his club and Roughead is just a unit.

Gary Ablett jnr. will go down as one of the best of all time, and I find it impossible to go past him. He is an ornament to the game, both on and off the field.

James Frawley. Made the Hawks backline look it's worst in years.

Mind you, shockingly inaccurate. Kicked 7 behinds that day...to go with his 14 goals. Just imagine any of our players having 21 shots for goal in just one game.

so he kicked a lazy 15.1 then, or equiva''' to. not a bad arvo's work in those days.

*on another note; I watched with mates at the kennel, Kelvin (got hot) Templeton, he individually pulled my mates Sainters teams pants down, one at a time. 15 odd goals from CHF, just untouchable.

& my mates didn't know whether to laugh or cry. ^_^

hayesy, I forgot hayesy.

Obba, I reckon Bartel has been a better team player than Hodge, and by no means am I taking anything away from Hodge (love his guts). Have a look at Geelong when they were at their highest peak - Bartel was regularly played in positions all around the ground. It was a luxury that they had at the time - that they could play a player of Bartel's calibre in a back pocket, back flank, forward flank or forward pocket. He obviously won a Brownlow playing mostly in the centre. Could he have won another one/two? Who knows, but he was willing to sacrifice personal glory for team glory.

Of all the Geelong players in the late 2000's to early 2010's, Bartel would've been the player I (ie the MFC) would've thrown as much money as possible to get him to our club. He may well have been offered a lucrative contract, not just from us, which if that were the case, it'd support my view.

Present days it's GAJ, Pendles (who's youngest bro has just signed on at Balwyn, from here in Sale), Wines, Mitchell, and the big Hawk Roughie.

Used to love Kelly at the Swans, Sticks Kernahan, and Hocking at Geelong.

Colin Silvia

Glad you spell his name wrong when he plays for the opposition.

Demon Dangerfield.

I think the Pav for his loyalty and consistent brilliance is right up there. He'd have a brownlow if he played for one of the big Vic clubs.

Sam Mitchell for the way he plays. Not just his skills but the way he just ignores all the scragging and dirty [censored] that his opponents do to him and focuses on getting the ball.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
