Could someone with more knowledge of such things download or provide a link to the article

"Why the Demons must embrace the Red Sox" by Tony Joel senior lecturer in history, Deakin University.

It's certainly worth reading.

Makes alot of sense.. I hope we don't have to wait 86 years though..

Hopeful that someone sends a copy to Glen Bartlett, a well constructed and written appraisal of MFC.

It is only 36 away!

I am doing my Honours year as a history student, Tony is my supervisor. I spoke to him yesterday and he gave me a sneak peak at the article. He is really passionate about both footy and baseball and wrote this with nothing but the best of intentions re the Dees. He really believes that we could facilitate this partnership and bring the Red Socks to Melbourne.

If I recall my MFC history correctly, I think the iconic red socks of the MFC were directly copied from the Boston Red Sox (1870s perhaps?), and was an important part of the shift away from all-white footballers (ie cricketers keeping fit in winter) to coloured foot jumpers.

Well written perhaps, but what the point of it I don't know...

I am a Red Sox fan so this is something I have thought about in the past - but I don't attach any meaning to the colours, history, and city parallels that abound.

Bartlett was purely trying to say that he wants the Demons to be an attraction when folks travel to Melbourne and he should be criticised alone for that - not for some cross-sport 'impossible dynasty' critique that this bloke has eloquently spurted into that article.

As for Bartlett's point; I am reminded of what Pagan used to say - "Show me the baby, don't tell me about the pregnancy."

Well, I don't think the 'baby' is possible, so please tell me about the 'pregnancy'; how exactly do you see this eventuating?

The Red Sox weren't around in the 1870s.

You are right. My recollection was false. Wikipedia (source of all knowledge :-) says:

"During the 1870s, Melbourne fielded teams in the Seven Twenties and South Yarra Cup competitions.

After a visit to England by one of the club's officials, the colours of red and green were officially adopted by the club. Shortly following, the club began wearing a predominately red strip and became informally known by supporters as the "Redlegs".

The name "Redlegs" was coined after a Melbourne official returned from a trip to England with one set of red and another of blue woollen socks. Melbourne wore the red set while the blue set were, allegedly, given to the Carlton Football Club. This may be the source of Carlton's nickname, 'The Blueboys'."

Think what you will about that .... so maybe the Red Sox copied us?

What are the chances Bartlett was just trying to say he wanted us to be a super successful, rich club? Good luck with that, but I think the whole Yankees thing was blown out of proportion from what was probably an off-hand comment in the middle of an article.

At the moment we're embracing the Cubs and just being depressingly bad for a long time.

How about we just start winning a few games of footy and give us fans something to cheer about. [censored] the Red SOX and [censored] the Yankees!

I bet you wouldn't be so begrudging if it was about the Green Bay Alpacas.
