No he is an 18 yr old on the rookie list who is being given time to develop, and obviously listens to the coaches and the feedback

Nearly everyone dreams about kicking the winning goal in a game of football. That dream became a reality for Scorpions youngster Ed Morris as he snapped truly to give Casey a winning 2 point lead in their round 14 Peter Jackson VFL clash with Bendigo Gold at Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday afternoon.

It really was a case of “cometh the man cometh the hour” as Morris jagged his second major of the afternoon to give us the victory with just minutes left on the clock. Our boys had trailed the home side for most of the day but had always kept within striking distance.

Up until the glorious moment, the diminutive Morris was already on his way to playing his best game for the Scorpions. Clearly relishing some added responsibility in the midfield the former Gippsland Power star had already amassed 23 touches to go with his two goals. He also laid an incredible 12 tackles. For the rover, the match winning goal was just the icing on the cake.

Despite his final quarter heroics, the first year player said it was just nice to get the win: “Yeah it’s been a while coming so we’re just happy to get the four points.” The win breaks a string of 6 losses leading into the game. The last quarter went for a whopping 36 minutes and was very tense for all involved in the match.

Evan Panozza was sensational in the dying minutes of the clash taking a really important grab on the last line of defence and forcing several stoppages. The skipper had started the game across half forward but as we all know he looks most comfortable in defence. Alex Georgiou was also at his miserly best.

A neutral supporter would’ve felt for the Bendigo players who played their hearts out, but it was not to be and their supporters were left to rue what could’ve been.

Throughout the match it was as if the Gold could sniff blood in the out of confidence Scorpions. Thankfully the lads from Cranbourne came through with the goods when it mattered.

First year Melbourne rookie James Harmes stepped up his game to a new level with 32 possessions whilst Mitch Clisby and Viv Michie each had 29 disposals, the latter the most damaging with his long raking kicks including 9 inside 50’s. James Strauss (25 touches) continued his fine form across half-back, whilst livewire Jay Kennedy-Harris was busy with 24 possessions.

Sam Blease (26 disposals) provided his customary run once again. His two goals proved vital in the Scorpions cause. Max Gawn was the dominant big man on the ground. Some of his 87 hit outs (yes 87) were worth as much as a kick. He also managed 25 disposals and a goal.

Truth be told, the Scorpions were very scratchy for much of the game and were initially kept in it by Jack Fitzpatrick’s two first half goals. Dom Barry also bobbed up at the right moments kicking 3 goals in the contest, two of which were in the last term.

Bryce Rutherford showed some promise whilst pint sized Nathan Page laid 10 tackles floating across half forward. Andrew Godfrey showed a clean pair of hands and heels at times coming out of defence. Dale Gawley saw a bit of it and will have learned a lot about the standard required at senior level.

The Scorpions have another very winnable game next Saturday as we chase our first home victory of the season against Frankston at Casey Fields. Although happy to get the four points from the weekend just gone, it is fair to say that our boys will need to step it up a gear if we are to get over the Dolphins who are always a hard team to beat.

Bring back the reserves- starting at 11am - before the main game. Not a novel idea- but one the worked well for Melbourne based clubs.

I'd like to see us stay in Casey region; but on the smaller crowd drawing 'Interstaters' games, I'd like our reserves to play prior to our main show.

Ground management.

There used to be six grounds ( 1980's ) that hosted games most weekends with two games / ground.

There are now two grounds to host those games most weekends

The surface of the MCG and Death park could not handle that many games.

It is all about TV spreading the games over the max. hours of a weekend.

They are not interested in what happens at the grounds only what they can televise.

Play VFL games Pre AFL games, for Some of the smaller crowd pulling games.

Bring in a Demon reserves team out of Casey-Dandenong areas, with a Social-Club base, with easy access to trains, to get there & home, without the boyz'n'blues makin' trouble, & watch it grow.

Just because the Deemographic of the remaining melbourne supporters wouldn't attend a Social Club, doesn't mean the whole populous is so private.

The VFL competition has not served well as a good place to develop AFL seconds players for a while now. Too many byes. Too many conflicting interested parties. AFL stand alone teams. VFL stand alone teams. Clubs going broke. It needs a serious revamp.

From any Victorian AFL clubs perspective I thing they would want a VFL game every week that the senior AFL team is playing and enough control over the team/alliance so that the developing players are playing enough minutes and are learning the same structures and styles the seniors AFL side use and are playing along side VFL only players that are of high enough quality to fulfil those structures/styles. Big ???? over whether the Casey and MFC alliance is providing that. Casey's win/loss record is a very minor part as far as the MFC is concerned.

The AFL, VFL and MFC need to make it work better for us and for everyone.

Maybe we could field our 2nds side in the EFL or similar?

Gawn looked average in the seniors the week before, but on reflection, after freezing to death watching our effort against the cats, maybe we don't have much to lose blooding him for the rest of the year.

An otherwise dull and boring afternoon at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo was lifted by a thrilling finish that saw Casey Scorpions youngster Ed Morris goal in the dying moments to give his team a thrilling victory by 2 points against the hapless Bendigo Gold.

There was much sadness in the air from the locals as the final siren sounded. The Gold are on their last legs after it was announced last month that the team, which hasn't won since the Bendigo-Essendon alignment ended two years ago, will fold at the end of the season. The game against poorly performed Casey, was possibly their last realistic opportunity ever for a win.

The Scorpions have introduced a significant amount of new blood into their senior team this season. This week it was the turn of David Gawley and Maia Westrupp, Melbourne's New Zealand born international rookie who picked up seven touches with limited opportunities.

Bendigo took the lead early in the game and although the visitors clawed it back late in the first quarter, it was the home side that held sway for most of the afternoon. The game itself never reached great heights and the skills on offer were what one would expect for two teams that had been winless for so long.

Casey last tasted victory in early May against the Northern Blues. Ironically, that team had a fortnight ago deprived Bendigo of a win when they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a last kick goal.

The Scorpions had the advantage of a number of AFL listed Melbourne players. A few of them like Viv Michie, Mitch Clisby, James Strauss, Sam Blease and Jay Kennedy-Harris achieved big numbers stats wise (plus Max Gawn who got the ball often and had an astonishing 80 hit outs) but the real heroes were a trio of youngsters who I predict have extremely promising futures ahead of them.

James Harmes (31 touches), Ed Morris from the Gippsland Power and Dom Barry who had a taste of AFL football over the previous fortnight are the players who impressed most for Casey when the chips were down.

The former, a rookie, played his best game to date; the latter, two players each kicked two goals in a frenetic final quarter. Barry kicked one at the 23 minute mark of the final quarter to regain the lead for his team. Bendigo responded three minutes later to grab back the ascendency. Jack Fitzpatrick marked deep in a pocket at 29 minutes but his shot for goal sailed wide of the goalposts to register a point.

Another minute and a half ticked by until Morris grabbed the ball in a pack and kicked truly. It was to be the last score of the day although another excruciating five minutes would elapse before the final siren saved Casey from what would have been an embarrassing defeat.

I noticed the same thing. Still criticism, but all constructive and much more encouraging. I have no problem with reviews like this.

Those numbers are heartening, even if it was against a side that has decided to fold. A loss would've been a disaster, so they avoided that and hopefully grabbed some confidence out of it.

Will be surprised if at least two inclusions aren't made from this lot. Wouldn't complain if it was three or four.

I can't believe others ca'n't see the vfl reviews are written after they've decided if they'll make any changes. I predict quite a few changes this week. Blease is a certainty IMO. Hope he goes ok.

Please give Sam Blease a go this year! Also Strauss. These guys are afl players and need some game time. They will reward you if given the chance!
