Melbourne firming to select midfielder Angus Brayshaw in next months national draft

A recent article (admittedly in the Hun, and also call Jake Lever 'Jay') states that Brayshaw has improved his 20m pace from a 3.15 sec to 2.81 sec.

I'm sceptical of those numbers, but it's still and indication of improvement. It also talks about his need to improve his endurance.

You have good reason to be sceptical despite the quote being in the above article Bob. That latter time is close to elite for 18 year olds and the improvement in the time is sensational as well.

I've watched him at training both at MFC (in January when he was doing AIS work experience at the club with Billy Stretch) and at the Sandringham Dragons and he just isn't that quick. He certainly wasn't tested at the recent draft combine because of an ankle injury.

I've only seen him play when fit in a televised game and he didn't look to have elite pace although he's handy and yes, I'm sure they'll have him working on his endurance when he makes our list.

What I like about him first and foremost from what I've seen is that he's a footballer first in that he's got all the skills and most importantly, he's good on both sides of the body. It's this that IMO puts him ahead of Petracca.

First and Foremost a footballer should be engraved on Recruitment. A lot of things can be developed bettered and improved but if your head isnt about footy it never will be.

It a ridiculously simple concept ignored by so many.

Dual-Sided Kicking: Angus Brayshaws biggest strength as a midfielder is his ability to hit a target on both feet. Brayshaw stands out as one of the most two-footed players currently playing football at any level, which has drawn many comparisons to Hawthorn midfielder and dual All-Australian Sam Mitchell. I consider Brayshaw to be a right-footer but he rarely shows a dominance towards one side of his body.

Leadership: Another trait of Brayshaws that stands out on the field is his leadership. Gus does a fantastic job of not only directing traffic, but also leading by example on the football field. He is definitely captain-material and I expect that he will quickly establish himself as a future leader in the coming years at an AFL club. He has elite football nous, he runs to all the right places and is a possession-accumulating machine.

Strength: Playing as an inside midfielder, Brayshaw possesses the courage and toughness required to win hard ball from the center and around the ground. As a big-bodied player (Brayshaw is 62″), he often uses his muscle and frame to fight through packs and clear the arms to dish off a quick hand-pass. The Dragons midfielder can handle a bump well, but is also a ferocious tackler when he cannot win the ball. He lays good, strong tackles and with his bigger frame players do not break through his tackles.

Intangibles: Brayshaw is a very composed footballer who keeps his head cool, even when under immense pressure. He has clean hands and dishes out a mean sidestep. Brayshaw is a tireless worker, his persistence, football smarts and running ability allow him to get to contest after contest. While he does not often show it, Brayshaw is very quick, he reportedly runs 20m in 2.82 seconds, which would put Gus in the top echelon for acceleration.

WEAKNESSES:

Brayshaws biggest weakness at the current point in time is his lack of versatility. While he is an incredibly balanced inside-and-out player, he needs to show some ability to either push forward or be effective as a half-back. Brayshaw could also make improvements on his efficiency playing as a receiver, he is prone to making a poor decision or two on the outside.

I think I can say I was right about him. We would have drafted him in the PSD at the end of 2008 but Liam Jurrah became available and our recruiting people snapped him up instead. We still might have taken him on the same day with pick 1 in the rookie draft but Brisbane snared him with pick 5 in the PSD (which was the second-last selection in that draft). Richmond had the last pick and were committed to Ben Cousins so we missed out on Tom by a bee's diaphragm. Still, we got Jordie McKenzie instead who probably was ahead of Rockliff until the last couple of seasons.

Neither would quite fall into the category of first and foremost AFL standard footballers in the first place and hence neither was drafted onto a primary list. Both needed something extra to make it and because they were both too small and too slow, neither ever did. And neither is in the class of Rockliff or Brayshaw.

There will always be those that dont make it but you can gaurantee your fn useless to an AFL team if you cant play football.

Fisher had a reasonable career just not at the highest level. Valentis isnt too shabby but again couldnt quite cement himself at AFL level.

Both highly regarded juniors, high picks and much better and fairer comparisons than yours but as usual you don't let the truth get in the way.

The highly regarded, strongly built midfielder has a high success rate, can't think of too many failures in recent times. It's the sexy outside ones that are the more likely to fail.

We are still heavily paying for recruiting failures during the late Daniher and Bailey era. That's when you were involved with the running of the club wasn't it?

Solid bodied mids have a much higher hit rate than any other player type.

I agree.. Tappy's never had the tank to be a mid....and cant develop it seems.. Can be the only major reason he hasnt come on..imho

Luke Tapscott (born 28 June 1991 in Orroroo, South Australia) is an Australian rules footballer for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).
