Mitch Johnson for me but obviously they wanted a role model.

Miranda Kerr would have been worthy in that event.

Look I know this is possibly irrelevant and contentious but isn't Goodes a Christian and if so how does that sit with the Dreamtime?

Missionary is my guess.

Other serious contenders like Hugh Jackman were not considered despite his attendance at G'Day LA for years,The Boy From OZ ,and other Aussie things.

He has just landed a job in a new Version of Peter Pan.

It's a great story that never really gets old.

Unlike Hughs wife ,whom he still lives with .

Aussie of the year my arse , for what

'' , havin a sook ? did we have men who went to war , putting there life in the line every day in a crap country , apparently better to kick goals than arses , , this joint is stuffed , ffs don't get me started about the boat burglars

So you'd rather it goes to some Nazi storm trooper invading some third world country to profit mega corporations and expand Americas military hegemony rather than someone who does positive work to try and lift up people whose land was stolen from them and who were almost wiped out thru over a century of genocide?

What some of us don't like and some of you don't understand, is that without the incident with a 13 year old girl I doubt Goodes wins the award. Declaring a 13 year old girl as "the face of racism in Australia" was outrageous by Goodes. The girl stated post the event that she didn't even know Goodes was indigenous. She was merely yelling at a big man with a big black beard running towards her. Who am I to call her a liar. And even if she knew what she was doing her treatment was appalling.

Whispering Jack is quick to use the racism card and throw around words like intolerance. There may be prejudices on this site and there may be some in this thread, but some simply don't agree with the decision to grant this award on the back of chest beating about a teen's foolish comments.

There's far too much discussion in society highlighting our differences. There's far too much discussion about what divides us. Those that think they're enlightened often only reinforce the divide. The quicker this country moves forward without so much concentration on colour, background, or guilt for the sins of the past, the better off we'll all be. Don't forget the past, but embrace the future. Promote unity.

Wow no wonder this country is going to the dogs. One thing you should never underestimate is the ability of Australians to rationalise racism, the genocide committed against the Indigenous people and the ability to place blame on the victim.

The suggestion of an Australian Day Ambassador is to be commended. Far more apt and speaks to a better reach in terms of affect.

So few of these so called Aussies of the year deserve such kudos. It smacks of jingoism and national guilt/esteem come cringe ethos.

Those who continually seek to divide do this wonderful country an ill service.

There are I suggest a whole lot of people who need to GET OVER a whole lot of issues.

A lot of 'victims' running around for mine

Yeah I'm just so sick of hearing 'victims' complain about the dispossession of their traditional lands, the destruction of their culture, their marginalisation from modern society and the genocide of their people. I really wish they would just get over it, I'm all burnt out on compassion fatigue. Haven't we been made to feel bad for long enough??

Ok I get it that you don't support the WA shark cull but can you not derail the thread.

Not stolen, old chap. Borrowed. They can have it back after we are finished with it.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
