Well these appointments will upset alot of the DL groupthink on assistant coaches.

None have distinguished themselves in their respective playing careers in the designated area they are coaching in.

What is Roos doing???

Can anyone explain the difference between:

- Andrew Nichol - Player Development Manager

and

- Brett Allison - Head of Development

Interesting aside in all this, the three assistants to the assistants from the last two years have now found new positions: Nichol with us (promotion?) Satterley to De La Salle as head coach, and Greaves has been announced as Development coach at Port Adelaide, responsible for ruck coaching.

On the other hand, Leigh Brown and Royal still without new homes.

It seems Neeld is also still homeless...very unhappy with his time at the Dees but hope he gets a gig somewhere else, even for the sake of his family. A public flogging by the press like he got must be pretty hard to take. Yes, I know he is paid for 2014 but can't help but feel for the guy at a personal level.

Back to topic: The updated, MFC website shows Todd Viney as - Manager Player Personnel. Any ideas on what this means?

Can't find any publications on Todd's 2013 role prior Roos but recall it was somehow related to player development. There is no List Manager so maybe the new role is similar... Viney's name is listed second to Roos so Viney's role looks like a senior spot (as he rightly deserves).

Has there been a Club confirmination/announcement on Todd's role in the Roos world? Is it a change or just a new name...would really like it if someone in D'land (or maybe the Club?) would confirm Todd's role (rather than title).

I am concerned a little with this overly 'Sydney' emphasis on who we have been picking up. If it were CS, CC and GL, we would be whinging about jobs for the boys. I know the big difference is these blokes have come from one of the stronger cultures in the AFL while the aforementioned triumvirate didn't get within a bull's roar of genuine success.
I will pour myself a snifter of port, sit back in my favorite chair and see what happens. It's nitpicking if anything but I hope Roos (and if you listen to him, you can tell he is smart) is smart enough to realize that we are here to win rather than hold a reunion of the 00's Sydney Swans.

Sometimes people make better coaches than players and vice versa. Look at Tim Watson a superstar player but was a shocking coach. Voss ended up on the scrap heap and Hird just wrecked his club but has survived. Roos knows what these people can bring and there good points.

Absolutely right. Ex- battlers can often relate more easily to battlers than natural stars.

It was important that we develop a group of coaches who understand each other and have a common philosophy. I'm sure one of the problems we had last year was that the players were getting mixed messages from the coaches - hence their hesitancy.The fact that many of new coaches know and understand one another already.is a big plus ..... especially as they come from a winning culture

Daniel McPherson was a terrific gutsy little player ........ and his coaching pedigree is first class. The fact that he has been out of the game for a couple of years suggests that he was specifically sought out by Roos who must rate him very highly as a leader, motivator etc.. That's good enough for me

This might work out but it's just a comment. No package in football is 100% perfect. I will be happy if 80% of what they do is good and 15% is adequate and 5% could use improvement. And so far I have nothing to really grade them on.

Roos being 'Sydney centric' is a good thing

It means he has people around him that know his philosophies on footy, how he works and they have all had success together. They will live in harmony and the club will hit the ground running from day 1.

I seriously doubt that Roos could sink us to lower depths. These no names come from an organisation that knows its onions. At this stage the old boys argument is irrelevant because they show the hallmarks of quiet achievers hopefully of the same quality of ex old boys Ross Lyon and Longmire. There is a lot of quality pedigree coming out of the Swans.

One could also argue Neeld came from a successful culture. But I still believe when Malthouse famously said Neeld would make a good coach was a backhander of sorts. What else could he say when asked directly? He's not going to say Neeld is a psycho chicken loose cannon.

I think I have said in Roos we trust once or twice.

But as he the head coach its a statement of fact as any Club must place trust in their head coach.

I view the overall package as a good thing and as I said, it's probably nitpicking. It's a 85%/15% situation at the moment. I just hope that PJ is there to make sure things don't go too far in an extreme direction (the true role of a CEO: one of oversight of the job performance of club employees, not micromanaging everything they do).

I wouldnt even call these guys no names. Atleast we know they have played AFL Footy and got lots of experience.

Guys like Aaron Greaves and Paul Slattery were all no names and even Neeldy aswell.

Very true Jabberwocky. It's why I feel slightly more comfortable this time around. Roosy has a record of success. Ever since 2010, I have always based my opinion on results and I will continue to do so. At the moment, what I'm saying is all theoretical as we haven't seen them bloody play yet! It might turn out to be a masterstroke.

If Neeldy was running a footy university, it would have probably looked something like this. The role of Neeldy in this case is played by Dean Bitterman and Beamer is played by Corey. I wonder who Nerdlinger was?

Absolutely agree but it won't stop the naive judgement on here as to the criteria for a successful assistant coach. And it's judgment best made by the coach.

And it might be premature about Hird surviving.....

Succinctly put. Some are good at doing it ( playing ) Some are good at Communicating it ( coaching ) A rare few are both.

We only need to draw from the latter 2 . people who can convey the nuances of the game. It always tickles me when some bloke retires and is instantly elevated to star coach in waiting. He may well be , but on ground ability assures nothing.

I think Roos knows what he's doing. I'll go with that for the time being
