AFL NATIONAL DRAFT - Pick 9

Featured Replies

You'd think that wouldn't you...

I'd expect any astute selection inside the top 10 to be a 150-200 game player.

Without looking at stats, I'd have a guess and say you'd average about 5 of the top 10 to play 150 games + games, 3 to be good average footballers and two to play 20-60 games but never amount to much.

Sadly we've had a lot in the last 2 columns so here's to hoping this year we do get it right.

Going to be an interesting draft... only 1, 2, 5 and 8 appear to be guaranteed locks so far according to various media reports:

#1 - Boyd

#2 - Kelly

#5 - Kolodjashnij

#8 - McDonald

Names seen linked to each of the remaining picks:

#3 - Billings, Aish, Scharenberg

#4 - Billings, Aish, Scharenberg, Bontempelli

#6 - Aish, Scharenberg, Bontempelli, Freeman, Salem

#7 - Scharenberg, McCarthy, Freeman

#9 - Scharenberg, Freeman, Salem

#10 - Bontempelli, Freeman, Salem

Definitely going to be a 'slider' out of this... wouldn't surprise me if Aish managed to get his way to our pick either:

#3 - Billings (Almost a lock if media is anything to go by)

#4 - Bontempelli (Big word on Bulldogs being keen)

#6 - Scharenberg (Collingwood take him ahead of Aish I reckon)

#7 - Aish/ McCarthy (McCarthy to fill a key position role)

#9 - Aish/ Freeman/ Salem

Can't believe Sheed is not in the calculations anywhere here. Big bodied mid in the Roos mold. Not an out and out star but has the necessary tools to be a very good 150-200game mid

For those with Foxtel the draft is on the new channel Fox Sports Plus just under Fox Footy.

But, as I mentioned in the draft dates thread, did you notice that when you go to Info it says:

"AFL: Watch the AFL Draft from pick 27 to the very end..."

What does that mean exactly? Is it a countdown to 1 or do we miss out on the first quarter of the picks? Confusing.

I'd expect any astute selection inside the top 10 to be a 150-200 game player.

That would be a pleasant change for us.

Has to be a mistake as it would mean the first half of the draft would be missed.

The channel is used when there's an overlap so it means the first 26 picks are likely to be on foxfooty.. After those picks often the panel than thoroughly go through every pick and you get the occasional update of whoelse is getting picked up. With 505 they'll show live draft picks as opposed to the post pick discussion.. It'll be up to the viewer to choose which one he wants :)

Actually the more I think about drafting Zac the more I warm to the idea. Initially, like most posters, I thought we should target the best "Midfileder" available, whether that be Freeman, Salem, Sheed etc and somebody who has the body to play Round 1 2014 would be a help. Then I thought that the person that we draft should be the person who we would least like to play against (viz. the Wines vs. Toumpas philosophy)! I have now settled on the idea that we should recruit the person that we want on our team rather than the opposition's, a subtle difference but the idea of having the Jones Brothers tearing up the midfield excites me!

CBDees - are you an alias of Mark Neeld ????

NO

I wasn't aware that Neeld was in favour of the Jones Bros. playing through our midfield but if he was then maybe we underestimated him!

Interesting if we are looking at a mid ready to fire round 1 - he (Scharenberg) looks a possible high risk and maybe not the one for us in our current state.

We have had a few too many high ranked recruits who have not been fit for a preseason especially in their first year.

Short term he may be a risk but if we look at the long term he may be the best prospect; if the club can get him right, and God knows we have had a few feet problems so we should have the experience, he could be the bargain of the draft.

I don't think we can expect a pick 9 to dominate and if we get a few games out of him then that would be ok. If we have to wait for the following year it may be worth it.

Let's face it if we are going to have to rely on a first year player to help us win games we are stuffed.

Ironic that beelzebub liked this post, given it's an extremely similar argument put against him in the whole Toumpas v Wines debate, and in that context he disagreed with it...

Surely we are not going to do this. We've got Cross, Michie, Tyson, Riley and Vince to fill the void and we must take best available even if they take a couple of years to develop. Who will remember a marginally improved performance in 2014 if we pass on a player who rips them apart for 8 years for one that is not as good but is ready to go round 1.

Last year the FD chose Toumpas who was far from ready to go round one but will probably turn out to be much better than (say) Wines who everyone wanted.

Best available please. It's a simple request. I can't see it being Sheed and prefer Acres but that is on little evidence. I'll watch both with interest.

Maybe he liked the way I framed my response? (Just kidding)

Anyway back to reality; I think we are looking at two different situations here, Scharenberg without "feet problems" looks as if he would be ready from round one, but with them will take a bit longer. But let's not get in to an argument about it.

I like best available.

I dont like best available meaning someone who's "upside" is unbelievably high. We have a history of taking some players trusting their development will take off after the next year or so and its bit us on the arse.

If it was Wines Vs. Toumpas Im picking Wines every time. Im sick of the "probables".

I'd expect any astute selection inside the top 10 to be a 150-200 game player.

If it's astute.

37% of Top 10 draftees between 1999 and 2005 did not, and will not, play 100 games. Clark and Ellis are not included in that number - Clark will soon play 100, Ellis is a season away.

47% of Top 10 draftees between 1999 and 2005 have played, or will play, 150 games.

The player taken at Pick 9 in that time has averaged just 70 games with only Clark and Jordan Russell in a position to positively affect that number.

I hope it's astute, and not a statistic...

best what ?

We wont pick Aish. Not the larger mid Roos wants

Roosy's players are strong over the footy. or they spend a few years in the 2b's growing & developing. Roos doesn't have the luxury of time atmo.

I thought Demons flying him out for scans mean they rate him and sre just doing their due diligence

Does anyone else think it would be odd if GWS take a midfielder with pick 2 ? As they traded Tyson to us for pick 2 which would be pick 4 if Hogan and Martin in the mix? So it should be Boyd and Billings/Scharenberg 1 and 2 right....?

I'd expect any astute selection inside the top 10 to be a 150-200 game player.

BH, I'd be very surprised if the Stats were to back that up. Happy to stand corrected.

5 posts up.

And he did say astute.

If we get it right, we will have what we want, but some are acting like we can't go wrong.

I assure you that one or two or three of these sure things just won't back up what their teenage selves did.

Let's hope someone else picks that kid for a change.

First of all, I really don't know. But I would hazard a guess that over 50% of the top 10 don't make it to 150 games (since the draft came in)

best what ?

Best player available, simple really no matter what position, Meth Coast as much as I hate them have sworn by this strategy despite their structural needs and it has certainly served them well

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
