I dont want to be greedy but is there any way we can obtain Freeman & Crouch? Are there any players worthy of trading for the ability to obtain both these two? Tapscott & Blease wont cut it, I have suggested Frawley before only if he wants out but personally cant see how to recruit both players...anyone see a way?

You are being greedy. The only way to get another top 20 pick now is to give away players we would want to keep. The best we'll be able to do is upgrade our lower picks, but I can't see any great value in doing that. I expect the club to shut up shop for the third trade week.

Agreed, I'm being greedy however we need every midfielder possible. Still Freeman (inside mid), Impey (small forward) and Jansen (inside mid), Cross (PSD) would be very welcome additions. Add Viv, Vince, Tyson we will have a positive trade/draft period.

Hard to argue with that selection

There has been talk about Collingwood trading 11 and 31 for the Eagles pick 6 in the hope of recruiting Bontempelli

I actually dont think this will happen as the Eagles may not risk losing the opportunity to get Sheed at 6 as being an inside mid like Crouch he might be gone before pick 11

Unless they have a rough diamond somewhere around pick 31 i really doubt they will go for it

Freeman is not yet an inside mid but can develop into one

Sheed and Crouch are both inside mids

Not convinced about Sheed's inside ability.

Ah ok thanks for clearing that up. So whats the hype with Freeman on demonland given we need inside mids and a truck load of them?

Agree pretty much with order, although my spies tell me Dogs would take Billings as they have Gia for only one more year.

I'm told Freeman and Kim Kardashian's little brother are our two targets - either way the last thing we now need is another extractor/quarter-back type - we now have Nat Jones, Viney, Tyson, Michie, Vince and Trengove and Magner (if he's kept) to do that role.

What we now need is pace (read Freeman) and defensive run/skill (read Kolodjashnij).

I like Freeman and would be wrapped if he became a Demon

You need to consider that he is a kid stepping into the AFL

Just pointing out that his opposition are no longer schoolboys

Your correct about the need for inside mids and my guess is that Cross is a likley addition if we fell short of the FD targets for 2014

Just like Dom Tyson and Taylor Adams there will be quite a few on offer next season as they are overpopulated at GWS and GCS IMO

True, we cant expect to fill every void in one preseason. Should our focus in next years draft be inside mids with KP backline players and a small forward or two? Agreed, we need Cross

Is there a father son pick next year too from what I heard? Any idea what the FS kid is like?

Me either as he lacks pace but the guy has footy smarts, leadership and the Eagles have him in their sights

IMO the very first thing we should be doing at the end of 2014 is extending the contract of James Frawley

Paul Roos is a smart footy person and it would not surprise me if he developed Hogan into a CHB just like David Neitz

Why not Hogan at FF. Didnt we make a mistake playing watts out of postion and not playing him where he was best suited; as a forward? And Roos did mention he wanted Watts as a midfielder, leaving Clark, Dawes and Howe as the only forwards.

no, imo we need more outside type mids who Will grow into inside players. we have Jones, Viney, Tyson, Vince, Michie, & hopefully Cross.

i think we need some more class with weapons onboard, a runner with speed & skills, vision & a step. we have plenty now with average speed. now we need 5the point of difference. we need one of these special types each year from now on.

HB might be hogans best position considering he played as a junior back and forward. After his year at Casey I think he should continue as a big forward. But just because it didn't work for Watts, doesn't mean won't work for someone else. Watts has struggled in general.

If Billings is there, then I think he is too good not to take.

Be interesting if Kade Kolodjashnij was available as well.

The rate of improvement of this kid the past couple of years, he has MASSIVE upside.

Not only that, but he also has the form and combine results, sounds like he'll be gone by 9.

I have put this option up before. Hogan to cut his teeth as a CHB while we off load Frawley in trade week while we can get maximum return. If he won't commit now I think he is as likely to go and from what I am hearing the AFL is moving to get rid of free agency compensation. So potentially we lose Frawley for SFA.

So much depends on a Roos lead resurgence up the ladder. Let's hope it happens and Frawley resigns for the journey but what are the odds, especially if he has a big year and the team struggles? He will be in big demand by the top clubs, who always seem to have excess room in their salary cap. Funny that!

Send it back to GWS for Adams and get pick 20 back in change to use on young Zak.... Just a thought :)

Billy for next year, he's I believe a slight build with lots of class?

but we need to continually refresh our list to keep the standard rising. we are atmo actually still building the list from the mess @ 2007... how we managed to get our recruiting so wrong over the next few of years is pure horror story. I would have done better picking players. & I wanted strong players who would win their own ball & play team oriented responsible footy.

I think about a ratio of 20% of our selections each draft should be classy players.

Freeman in other words

freeman or whoever is there that is good enough. I haven't seen any of them.

but for a top 10 pick we would want a fairly complete player with good weapons.

I'd love it if we could trade for another top 15 Pick & player. I'd like Koladishan/Freeman & Lennon/Crouch.

Funny thing is the Eagles need to add pace to their mids but are said to be looking at Sheed, I'm not convinced by that either.

I think his biggest problem in close is that he doesn't have clean hands and that's maybe because he doesn't see the ball well enough. He likes to have some space to see the ball coming at him and at AFL level he won't have the luxury. If you watch our new boy Tyson he sees the ball well, has clean hands, creates time and makes good decisions.

I reckon they only really want sheed because he is Western Australian, this homesickness stuff is going to become more and more of an issue imo now it's becoming so much more common and easier to be multi club players and leaving to go home is now a perfectly acceptable reason to up and leave.

if it means we get Crouch i am fine with it.

No, homesickness is only an excuse. I don't think it is an issue as such and I think once things settle a bit more with the new clubs it will be used a lot less.

I'm not convinced the Eagles will go for Sheed unless they get the later first round pick and that's why they are looking at trading out 6 for 2 later picks. They couldn't justify Sheed at 6. I might be way off the mark but lets watch what happens over the next month.

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
