So, where to from here with pick 2?

Whatever your philosophical approach to draft assistance, the AFL's refusal to accept our application has to be regarded as a major blow to our recruiting prospects over the next month or so.

From a practical point of view, a priority pick anywhere in the top 10 (which would have been warranted based on our performances between 2007-13) would have given us a major chip for use in the coming trade period.

We don't have that now, which leaves us with the # 2 selection which we've said would be traded "if it can bring in immediate talent however it would be unlikely to do so unless it can secure a collection of talented young midfielders."

It remains to be seen whether this can be achieved and whether we would get real value from trading that prized selection. Perhaps we can turn to the free agency market or look at some aggressive player trading to bring in some seasoned midfielders and hold on to # 2 and take James Aish?

Unless Sloane, Rockcliff or someone of that calibre is on the table, we should look at taking a kid.

Aish or Kelly for mine.

As I suggested elsewhere the value of this pick has gone up. We had a certain potential largesse ( of sorts ) had we had an accompanying PP . We dont.

Use it wisely MFC . Thing is I think they will this time.

Regard it as unlikely that we'll land Sloane, Selwood or Rockcliff with pick 2.

Unless it's to be used for Swallow or Adams, it would seem we should use pick 2 on a kid.

Perhaps Roos might be able to land a few good recycled hard bodies with our lower picks.

As an aside, we absolutely MUST land Cross as a free agent. And re-sign Sylvia.

I sense 2 will go on Swallow or Adams depending on who will deal. The dominoes have yet to start falling.

Whatever we do we must use it on a hard-bodied mid who can compete and help Jones and Viney straight away.

Aish for mine

Any of the following are fine with me:

Draft Aish

Trade for Sloane

Trade for Rockliff

Trade for Swallow

Trade in a package with pick 20 & Jamar for Adams, Tyson & a later pick. (Means we take Jolly as a FA)

And agree with Ron, Cross is a must and I think Weller should come under serious consideration also. I'd also like to keep an eye on what gets shaked out of Geelong when their delistings are done....

Continue to be amazed that anybody imagines Mark Jamar has ANY trade value. AMAZED!

He's a sweetener, not the main prize.

The draft picks are what's there to get them over the line, and I reckon Russian would have more value to GWS then any of Jetta, Nicholson or Magner would have.

How is a non-marking, non-kicking, non-mobile, single figure possession winning ruckman of any value, other than to the opposition? The modern game sadly is one that has passed Jamar by. He is an on-field liability, tapping abilities or not.

You should ask GWS as they were chasing Robert Warnock last trade period.

And as I said Jamar was a sweetener. I could have also posted trade picks 2, 20 and (insert generic non requied Melbourne player name here) for Adams, Tyson & late pick.

Anyway this thread's about pick 2, if you want a discussion on Jamar, then start a thread on his worth.

Unless we get Sloane we use pick 2 on a kid.

Swallow, Adams etc are not worth pick 2.

To trade for them we would also need to exchange other picks that get us higher.

I think pick 2 should be used on a kid and maybe the club can trawl through the VFL,SANFL,WAFL etc for a hard bodied midfielder with AFL pace.

Can anybody think of any players in this category from those leagues that would be worth a shot. Not just a ball magnet but MUST have AFL standard pace.

Swallow or Adams and a first round pick back to us?

Well this is a shallow draft.

Wouldn't be against using Picks 2 & 20 on young guns:

eg Pick 2: Aish

Pick 20: Jones and

then later picks on the players you mention.

Jason Pongracic who spent the year playing with the Dolphins in the VFL could fit the bill IMO. I'm still amazed he was overlooked in last years draft.

The value of a pick is not like a currency whereby its rate is fixed to a particular market. Its all relevant to the year its used and how that years trade and drafting looks to play out.

You get or make the best of it. To say neither Adams or Swallow is worth 2 may in a better scenario be quite right but is it value in terms of this years market ?

Our needs are very here and now. Aish could well turn out a better player or he may not, we know of examples where the extrapolation falls over. we need players to stand along with Jones, Vines, Toumpas and possibly Cross to forge into an effective midfield and to so next season..

There are decent players in the 2nd round or even later in the first. Am happy to consider a decent trade for existing young B grade mid ( he could still get better also )

AIsh or Scharenberg

We wont get fair value in a trade

There's still plenty of decent footballers running around in the 2nd tier competitions and we picked up a couple in Magner and Couch that had most of the qualities required, except the pace unfortunately.

Good test for the recruiters coming up. I can't say I saw anything of Pongracic as I only really took an interest in Casey. I liked and still do like Best from Casey, however whether he is up to it is one for those with the knowledge of what's required, namely our recruiting staff.I will have to see if I can find some footage of Pongracic.

One thing you can generally say about the players coming from the 2nd tier comps is they are keen to make the best of their chances at AFL and generally give 100%

I liked what PJ said the other day, that we would look at players on the fringe for very good midfields who are looking for greater opportunity. 1 or 2 of them combined with a chappy or cross and I think that could be enough 'mature' support for the likes of Viney, Kent, Toumpas, Pick 2, etc.

I still feel there is a lot of truth to come out yet with regards to the players we're talking to, any of the following deals would be good imo

pick 2 - Rory Sloane

pick 2 - David Swallow

pick 2, Mark Jamar - Taylor Adams, Anthony Miles, pick 10

pick 2 - Scott selwood, pick 25

Draft: any of : Aish, Scharenberg, Crouch, Sheed, Kelly, Billings, ( i'd back Roos to get that decision right.)

Any of the following are fine with me:

Draft Aish

Trade for Sloane

Trade for Rockliff

Trade for Swallow

The issue is that MFC have little to trade with. What does have trade value, we want and must keep. What we don't want then well.....no body will want. Our only piece of value is draft picks. I don't think pick 2 will get you any of the targets above.

Sweetener? More a sour lemon.

Do we think Aish is a certainty? What would be the outcome on here if we took kelly?

Unless we get Sloane we use pick 2 on a kid.

Swallow, Adams etc are not worth pick 2.

I agree that Adams is not worth pick 2 but Swallow definitely is.
