I'd like to hear from those posters who defend Caro's principled journalism to comment on her silence about Martin up until the moment he thumbed his nose at her beloved Richmond.

Spot on Sue.

So a lot of draft pundits have suggested that in hindsight we should have chosen Martin instead of Scully or Trengove. Well, if Richmond lose Martin, I'll be glad we chose Scully because rather than losing Martin for nothing like Richmond look like doing, we ended up with deals that lead us to getting Toumpas, Hogan and Barry.

Not that long ago she wrote a very specific article aimed at him listing the reasons why he should stay with Richmond...

Oh how things change!

She wrote articles last pre-season alluding to his issues. She is fair - people just don't like to open their biased eyes to it.

Show me.

Because what I clearly remember is that she said the rumours about him were over stated and not warranted. If that's "alluding to his isses" it does not count given the no-holds-barred approach applied to players of other clubs.

I was just looking at the Banner above again and noting the characters of those depicted. This is the type of players we aspire to attract and retain, nurture and admire.

There is no way in hell Martin would be fit to tie any of their bootlaces. Yes the guy has a bit of talent. Seems compromised , and unable to string 4 qtrs together often , if at all. There is mongrel and there is loose-cannon. Am all for the former and dead against the latter.

As I previously suggested , Martin moving from Richmond will have a ripple effect. Id rather look at others possibly dislodged form their list because of this than martin himself.

His ilk would be a cancer at the club

Dusty is 22. He is right at the age where your tough boy image falls off and you start to grow up and be a man. With the right leadership, encouraging words in his ear and making new mates within the club, he could completely change his image he first began with.

He was no different to all the other boys in the under 18 Campbelltown side. I played 3 years for them when I was under 18 and yeah half the side were trouble makers from Macquarie Fields, but if you have grown up in Western Sydney like, it's really not a big deal like the media make it out to be. They're young boys and Dusty was just one of many of them.

after having a good think about it i think we'd be better off looking past Martin.

He has undeniable on field ability and that's great but we are in the process of trying to effect a cultural change, he is very capable of hindering that,

600 k that he wants is alot of money, would much rather throw that at a taylor adams and or David Swallow, maybe abit less for them but you get my drift.

It's clear to me what she's saying - we should ice any ideas of getting dusty.

If thats what she is insinuating is his core issue, and saying it publicly, then her real intentions are to scare of any suitors for Martin so that he stays a Tiger.

Gary Ablett Snr was a loose cannon with issues. God I wished he played for Melbourne.

Bring it on!

Caro hasn't left much wriggle room now for the eventuality if Martin and Richmond kiss and make up. If that happens now the board would have to be condemned by all and sundry for making a monumental mistake.

I love Mark Robinson's take on the situation in the Hun.

"Tigers also have the option of forcing Martin into the draft, where GWS have no 1 pick."

More like, GWS can do a deal with Martin and leave the Tigers empty handed.

Quite. And I'm hoping that when Melbourne talks about having interest in this ratbag, it's really doing so to deflect attention away from its search to attract some really solid citizens who can also play good football in the midfield.

It's interesting also that Carro's finally decided to fully lift the lid on the Dustin Martin story and what an embarrassment he is to the Richmond Football Club. Of course, she still writes in complimentary terms of the work of Richmond officials like the hardworking club chiefs. At other clubs such people would be accused of covering up the club's poor culture and the misdeeds of its players and demanding the sacking of the board and CEO.

second round pick should do it then...lol...

If he was the culture killer that caro wants us to believe he is... Then why have Richmond offered 1 million big ones?

It is a worrying thought that the club might have to spend a great amount of time and effort baby-sitting a high priced star at the expense of spending it on the necessary developement of young players.

Accepting many players dont have great loyalty to their clubs and team-mates, it would seem to me that Martin is at the forefront of those with their hand out and a me me me attitude. This is not going to help a team with the fragile culture of Melbourne, even with the Messiah coming on board (and he there only for 2 - 3 years of any period Martin was with the club).

Still, if he did come to the Dee's, I suppose he would move on for a better offer in a couple of years.

Slightly off topic - but sort of related. We have pick #2 in the ND. IF, and its a big IF, Buddy joins GWS, surely they cant be thinking of getting Boyd......surely.

So - our pick #2 will be extremely sort after if this was the case. Surely a good deal can be done to attract a quality midfielder from a club who is desperate for a KPF....

I, like another poster earlier, am hoping that Roos is playing games and we are no where near considering Dusty. I really think its madness considering him. We cant handle it.

no she is saying richmond would be better out of it and she's right.

we're all very hopeful roosy can fix our cultural and psychological problems but dusty's are in another league.

I'm not 100% against it, but the club needs to consider that on a personality level he is the diametric opposite of a guy like J Viney.

I reckon Jurrah might have him covered...lol....

I think it's far more likely as already intimated in the media that if Buddy goes to GWS it will only be if they adequately compensate Hawthorn ie pick 1. Which they will use to take Boyd.

Personally I hope that Buddy does go to GWS it take them out of the market and makes using the PSD a real option i.e. Martin for nothing (if we assess the risk that he poses as being tolerable - which seems doubtful) That way we can use pick 2 for someone like Swallow or Sloane.

I don't know when it was decided that Richmond's "culture" was so much stronger then ours...

This lets not take Dusty because "we're too weak", or he "should go to Swans or Geelong where the culture is strong" talk annoys me.

Its the defeatist and self perpetuating mumblings of a losing culture.

Round 1 2014 - Add Roos, Snr Assistant, Dusty, Hogan, Pick 2, etc... to our team and our "culture" might start to involve winning games of footy.

so would I Ign'.

or really Rich,,, Rich would be handy under Roos I think.

..... only I reckon because they are talking his head, & his price down.. so reading it this way, I think a deal is struck, & he is in the animal schute now.

IMO he won't be coming our way thankfully, for all the reasons mentioned. THTH. let one of the powers that be tame his ego.

Drafting mongrel is good but not all in one package. its the mistake we've kept making in the past... trying to bring in this individual, or that individual, to compensate for so many Choirboys.

we need a list full of players, with the mongrel & fire built in.

We had the same debate about Ben Cousins when he was available, and he gave good qualtiy service to the Tigers for the time he was there.

Contrary to the judgemental hysteria of some.

As Willie Nelson is meant to have said "I think it is just terrible and

disgusting how everyone has treated Lance Armstrong, especially after what
he achieved, winning seven Tour de France races while on drugs. When I was
on drugs, I couldn't even find my bike."

It wasn't preseason and her articles about Martin have been littered with comments such as "someone should advise Martin and his management that they should back his talent and sign now for two years."

She is far from fair. Not that long ago she said things such as:

"Captain Trent Cotchin reportedly played host to Martin... [Marting was] something of a younger brother." - now she is saying that it will be a relief for Cotchin

"the brilliant young player probably sits in the top five in the club's best and fairest, and near the top of the competition in score assists" - actually he doesnt even rank in the top 100. Rodan FFS ranked higher

"he appears to have found a home at Tigerland where he feels secure, happy and well liked."

She paints him as a great player who is back on track but the moment he goes to field other offers she has a go on FC and writes articles with no mention of his football abilities - just that he is deeply troubled and a burden on Richmond - essentially character bashing.

It's weird - I thought you'd be able to relate to personal attacks.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
