Jack Watts - More Discussion (for those who haven't had enough)

Once again though, it depends on what you can get for Watts.

I'm open to trading him, but not for a bloody 2nd round draft pick.

I'd want around pick 10 or a Taylor Adams type youngish mid, or else I'd rather hold onto him.

definitely, it would be an absolute travesty to get unders for Jack Watts.

But personally, id rather keep him!

I want what I think it's worth letting him go for.

Unless we get that, I'd rather hold onto him in the vain hope he develops some mental toughness.

It's not impossible.

so whats unders? hes a #1 pick that performs like a decent second rounder most the time.

People need to be realistic in their expectations.

I want what I think it's worth letting him go for.

You'd rate his worth a lot higher than me or opposition clubs. I accept I'm not balanced when it comes to Watts. As a footballer he's not worth much more than a stale packet of Twisties to me. He just doesn't impact games. I also accept that supporters value him on "upside" and can't get past his lovely skills.

Where do you think Hannebery, Sloane, Shuey, Steve Motlop, Christiansen, Fyfe and countless others were taken in the draft ?

I don't know what the prima donna is worth, but I do know there's value in the draft if you can identify it. Getting Taylor Adams for Watts would be a huge win for me. But I don't think he's worth Adams.

Which is why you should never put a fixed price on your house should you choose not to auction.

I think you are arguing against yourself there.

You said we want more than Watts is worth.

A house will only be sold for what people will ultimately pay. If you ask for more than they will pay, you will get less, which you may or may not accept.

Semantics maybe, but whatever.

More to the point, I don't really want to lose Watts, as even though I agree he is not hard at the ball, he is coming into his best years and physical condition. He could bulk up and adopt a harder approach. His skills are our best. He can score unlike most others.

For me, it would have to be a great deal for us, or I would pass.

Jack Watts needs to be released from this horribly managed club, that has thrown the kid to the wolves once too often...

It started when he was played against Colllingwood, well before he was ready, as a skinny year 12 student, as a marketing ploy by the club. Since then he has been the poster boy for pretty much every colossal failure (of which there have been an extraordinary amount) the club has bumbled their way into.

Last night was the final straw for me... there is no way, a kid, who has lived their adolescent years under pressure that would test a seasoned veteran, appear on national TV, at a time when there is speculation from every angle about his future. The fact that he clearly wasn't properly briefed on the most obvious of questions is yet another failing of the club's administration and has turned up the heat on him tenfold for no good reason.

Jack is a nice kid, an exceptional sporting talent and a potential asset to any club.

Jack is not a leader or a ruthless competitor, he's never pretended to be and people need to stop expecting it of him.

If Jack doesn't get out of that place soon, a really nice kid, just trying to find his place in the world like anyone else, is going to wind up in a padded cell.

There are more important things than Melbourne getting full value for their number one pick, especially since the club has let him and others down so many times.

The kid deserves better!

I would like to see Jack Watts re-sign with the club. In short, I just can't see us securing a deal commensurate with a number one draft pick who still has a lot of upside.

That said, I can't buy into this argument. It's our footy club and I find this angle patronising in the extreme. I want footy players who buy into the intangibles of a footy club - to my mind, it's far more than a 'job'. If Jack doesn't get that, I'd support trading him for a lesser player who does get it.

What a pathetic load of flogs you all are.

"There's no doubt I love the club and I love the boys."

He said that very clearly. It was very clear.

He is unsure of his future. He's a 22-year-old with no success, looking down the barrell of another 3-4 years without playing finals. He wants to know that his employer is going to provide the environment necessary for him to thrive.

He's 22 for crying out loud.

Going by the tone in here I wouldn't blame him if he leaves.

He's not leaving. He's just riding the wave and seeing what decisions the club has made moving forward.

Ya'all would do the same if you were working at the worst organisation in your field, with no improvement in sight.

What a pathetic [censored] you are.

Some are born leaders, some are taught how to lead, others are happy to follow a leader and just be a foot soldier. That doesn't mean they are not good enough it simply means that they would rather do what they do well and leave the leadership side of things to others.

Sometimes the penny drops a little later in life and as they develop and mature they also learn to lead; who knows Jack may learn one day, or he may not.

God forbid Jack may be the replacement version of Col Sylvia and we may spend the next 5 years waiting for his break out year.

some grow into leaders early & some do not.

some develop leadership later with their own development & some are born bullies. no hard & fast to this, except the strong will of desire to do it.

doers, & have it done ers.

You won't know what something is worth until you put it on the market. Ultimately any market determines price, but in a solid market a great agent can manipulate outcomes. Poor agents can cost you thousands. In a boom market the result should take care of itself.

"If you ask for more than they will pay, you will get less, which you may or may not accept."

You may be inadvertently asking less than you should and undersell - unusual yes, but it happens. Or, you price yourself out of the market, attracting the wrong buyers and have no interest. If you are motivated to sell you ultimately sell for less than you should have because of how things were handled from the start, the first 30 days of any campaign being the most crucial. Never set a fixed asking price with a private sale campaign.

Perhaps current footballers should be made by their respective club to keep their traps shut. As everyone knows what happens when some footy player talks about their future to the media,it is sometimes taken out of context,

and how do fellow players feel towards that player.......... perhaps they feel betrayed or is it all about money. I am referring to WATTS.

Under BAILEY I remember when we the dees where flogged by GEELONG 186 pts it was reported in the newspaper a week later due to being dropped to the reserves COLIN SYLVIA said I don't know where my future is

at MFC,he was reinstated to the seniors, never to be dropped again and later received a 3yr contract. Weak a p.ss Dees for putting up with it or did the media take his comments out of context? WHY did SYLVIA talk to the

media in the first place? If truly was concerned perhaps he should to told there's the front door don't let it hit you on the way out.

A decent second rounder is the backbone of most clubs - after all there are only 18 first rounders, so on average that's one per team and there are 21+ other slots of fill. (yes I know you can accumulate a few over the lifetime of a player, so you might have 5 per side o so). So if Watts performs like a decent second rounder, your loathing of him is far too extreme even if it is now clear he was not worth a first pick.

It seems to me that your dismissal of Watts is a result of bitter disappointment that he was not the first-pick saviour of the club rather than his actual value as a player.

(not saying that a trade for a mid-fielder would be a mistake, just saying)

Sylvia is one of the few players on our list that opposition coaches rate. Fact.

sue my disappointment is based upon nothing more than he seems to cruise and play Half hearted. id despise anyone on that basis.

i purely mention picks as Thats the currency.

He has played some very good games this year, and we will have interest from multiple clubs, so if we can drive his value up to a late first round pick from 9-16 sorta range i'd be pretty happy,

would Gws do a swap of Watts for Adams? or would we need to throw in steak knives?

Still has a truckload of potential.

He hasn't reached his ceiling.

And he won't IMO. I was incredibly disappointed with his appearance on the footy show and my initial thoughts were " how do we keep him". After reflection, my gut instinct says get rid of him. He may be a great footballer somewhere else, he could be this, he could be that but he lacks a killer instinct and, sadly, does not have the do or die attitude our club needs.

The reality is that he has played many a horrible game for us and to publicly declare that he wanted the club to improve or he was out (let's be honest, that's what he did) was truly shiteful and were the words of someone who has never had to battle for anything in his life.

There's discussion as to what round he would go, but I hope the discussion is around how do we replace him with an out and out junk yard dog that will fight for every possession and be proud to put on a Melbourne guernsey.

We are not selling an effing house, we have a possible 17 other buyers of which about a dozen wouldn't be interested.

Watts happens to have a few gifts (height, skills, position) that make him unique, or rare, in the market place. And he also has the added 'benefit' of being from a development program that people look down on as third world "if he was with us, we would make something of him" is an attitude that will make others believe that there is more there than there really is.

You ask for more than you are going to get and you hope to get something valuable back.

Because if you want to make it a completely emotionally detached decision - Watts is an asset that we cannot lose unless we get a commensurate asset in return.

Let's talk about Asset Destruction:

Pick 3

Jordan Gysberts

Cam Pedersen

Try and do a better job than that is what I would say to Viney and co...

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
