Scully post match interview

316 your point gets hidden behind your recall bias. Sloane was a late pick and isn't exactly a star, he's a strange example.

Freo are one of the hardest toughest teams going around and there 3 best mids in Fyfe, Mundy and Barlow were all skinny kids at one stage. Although they are tall for mids.

Chad Wingard was a skinny kid who put on a clinic and won a show down today. Michael Walters did it for Freo last night.

The Predergast drafting era was a disaster because he focused on attractive elements of a player rather than the collective worth.

But Toumpas v Wines is different. It's simply 2 guys with different skill sets at different stages of development. But very importantly Toumpaa is a footballer.

The clubs development of players has been atrocious, at least the recruiters changed last year and the coaches will change now

Barlow, yes, the bloke who Freo rookie, right after we re-rookied Matt Newton for some unknown reason, then went onto re-rookie Meeson.

That was a good rookie draft, these blokes were taking us no where, yet instead of looking in the VFL, etc.. We just go Newton and Meeson, on ya Dees.

As for Nat Fyfe, he is clearly an exception and all sides shake their head at that one, that does happen.

Sunny Walters is a pure footballer and has always oozzed class, as has Wingard... Lucas Cook has not, he was a prospect, a project type we chose early for some reason.

You won't catch me blaming our development either, I don't think it has been the best, but that is an easy excuse - I firmly believe we drafted a combination of soft kids who some happened to also be stick thin insects as well... Toumpas is just soft, I guess we should be thankful he isn't an insect.

Ollie Wines is a man, looks and plays like one, don't you date put Toumpas in the same sentence.

Well said... The MFC don't like hard bodied, hard at it types... We've been going through a phase of collecting stick thin athletes, what for, who knows?

Maybe oneday they will announce that they've just been taking the p*ss for the past decade.

I would donate both testicles to get Luke Hodge at the MFC.

We need a warrior in the team. There's nobody on the list that will take to a contest with 100% committed courage other than Mitch Clark and maybe Jonesy but I'm even being generous there.

Pity, Regret? This is a lying child that feels nothing. His brain should be studied when he dies.

Along with the brains of those MFC supporters who simply cannot let go of the fact that he left? The irony of some of the commentary in this thread is incredible.

I have no issue at all with the fact he walked, at his age if i got offered a contract like that i would too, my issue was the big song and dance, if he had of said, this might be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and was honest about it, i doubt anyone would have a problem with him, the fact he is being a total [censored] about it now is nothing but a poor reflection of a young man who has never for one game earned the money he is on up there, really should look at that before he gets too cocky.

But that is just it... there was no song and dance on Scully's part. He lied, yes, he avoided the issue when confronted with it, yes... but not once did he create a "song and dance about it"... that was the whole media circus and the likes of us here on these forums. And as for this "he lied to Jimma" line... what was he supposed to do? Could it be possible that he didn't have the heart to tell him he was going because he didn't want to add to his obvious worries? What would any of us have done in the same situation?

I'm no fan of Scully's (I'm one of those who was certain he would stay a Demon), but I really think people need to get over this whole thing; I think it's quite reasonable that he says what he likes about us if we supporters are still giving him a hard time every time he takes the field against us. Give me one good reason why he shouldn't?

On the first part, i think his comments demonstrated it may be more about not having the guts then not having the heart, but like i said i have no issue that he left, but he left on really bad terms which is what i have an issue with, he had the choice to handle things differently, he hasn't that's just the reality of his decisions unfortunately, imo he can bag the club all he likes but we pretty much got Hogan and clark in return correct? something like that anyway, he is getting well overpaid up there and good on him.

EVERY club in the competition would've selected Toumpas over Wines.

It was Whitfield 1 Toumpas 2 through pretty much the entire year, GWS made some, in all honesty strange choices in Plowman and O'rourke that got Toumpas through to us, i still wonder if that was part of the Hogan deal.

If i were a football player at this club, when Scully left i would have drawn a line in the sand, like geelong did with hawthorn after 2008 and say while we are still here playing we will NOT lose to this team under any circumstance. Less than 2 years later Scullys decision is already justified.

This club just has no ticker at all. We got walked all over by a team that is so below where we are. Its just disgraceful really.

I agree with most of what you say, but the bolded line, maybe not... I think it was more a case of a team on its way up passing a team that is all but down for the count. This is no surprise considering the picks they have had, most of which have 40 games under the belt. We'll bounce back, but currently our list is almost as inexperienced as theirs, but without the benefit of the two compromised drafts.

we were missing some good players too, Clark, Dawes, Hogan, Frawley, and then Grimes, Trenners and Howe totally out of form, shows we are a long way from our best, not too concerned that we lost, more about the reasons why.

What 316 clearly doesn't get, is that teams need Toumpas' type of player - highly skilled receiver - to be successful, as well as the Viney/Wines clearance winning type.

Our problem is that while other teams develop their skinny outside types into hard running contributors, ours tread water.

We need to develop them like other clubs have developed Walters, Wingard, Dal Santo, Griffen, et al.

If any of those players ended up at MFC, they'd be gone by now.

With the right development, a guy like Jamie Bennell had every chance of ending up just like Walters.

I like these types?

You like to talk crap & put words in the mouths of others.

The way he makes up those strawmen, just so he can knock them down is a thing of beauty. Shame it has no bearing on what you said.

But I getcha. It'd be nice to have a BBBHall to clean up Scully, but those days are over. The day Footscray took Hall from the ground to stop him killing the Nth backline was the day the biff was declared dead - now and forever. Now if you want to hurt them you point to the scoreboard. That's as rough as it gets.

And we can't even do that. :(

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
