silly talk bb

tell me why..

in all seriousness.

Im being very matter of fact and trying to give him a balanced plate.

Much is made of this concept of "development"

Yet no one actually fleshes this out much. Hes had coaching, mentoring, physical and personal training. Hes been played in a variety of roles and given specific task. Some hes done well on others hes lamentably wanting.

The reality is much of where Watts is is simply as a result of his efforts; on and off the field.

Anyone who reads these forums will have to acknowledge Ive been a big fan of him. Essentially I am, but I wont be an apologist for him.

5 years in the sytem. He ought to be established by now...not ...oh wait a whiles longer...etc etcs

I agree... Please Jack Watts don't wait ... Go Now.. ! After what I saw on Saturday.... Weak Heart, Soft , Soft, Not much ability either... We do not need him ... Nothing to offer this Club....

I think I might be agreeing too. Isn't that sad.

And if he goes we will have lost two number 1 picks in 2 yrs. FMD that is appalling

Bb, you have got points to make that are hard to refute, but putting this "honest speech" into Watts' mouth was silly:

"Im a prodigious talent yet to realise my potential for a myriad of reasons including less than ideal ardour of the contest and inconsistent efforts and application to the task at hand.

Despite this I want to consider my options which will be heavily influenced by my preference of senior coach.

I reserve my right as an employee to weigh my options."

I think Jack speaks pretty honestly and modestly about his achievements. This all must be tough for him at least as much as it is for us. I don't reckon it's fair to lampoon him the way you did there.

If carlton offer us pick 9 for Watts it needs to be seriously considered, he has huge upside, but he is a little soft so he may never realise it regardless of who coaches or where he plays, pick 9 would get us Crouch who is a young contested ball machine ( exactly what we need right now )

robbie...the point of suggesting "honest'; was to suggest hes not confronting the full situation if hes only coming at it from a limited position and not the wider picture.

Young players are often tentative. May look like "soft" to some. Tentative comes of not being too sure what to do out there. Watts needs to settle to some role, get some understanding of how he gels with team-mates in his part of the ground - and he has not had the chance. His development has been held back by the club. I think this is fairly close to what Roos said...

So, I don't accept that he is soft. He's tentative. Just needs to know what he's expected to be doing, and a Roos would sort that quickly enough. Some here want to see the grunt first, but that just isn't Jack's starting point or his strength.

He's not built to be a battering ram, and not everyone has to be, no matter what disappointed one-track-mind Demonlanders may think. But what he is, that has yet to be identified, and put in place, and developed. Apparently Roos has some confidence it can be done. (If "soft" was how Roos perceived him, would Roos be speaking so positively of him?)

5 years of bad teaching.

This list needs Mr. Keating from

"Dead Poets Society"

so 10 years for Colin...ffs

lets get real ..its not all about this 'development'

More often the cause is very close to home....the mirror.

It hasn't is the past. A lot of other things need to change in this footy club. As I said before, unless we change the culture, draft picks, no matter how high, aint going to do much

& neither will surplus mature players from other clubs, amount to much without that as well.

wyl, you don't get taught an appetite for the contest

You do when there is something to fight for.

This club has avoided the contest since 2008 (excluding most of 2010)

Its all been politics.

No i haven't. But i have worked in jobs that are full of political rifts and the attention is taken off the actual job.

Just give Watts a year under Roos is all i hope for.

WYL...I will say that footy clubs are mysterious beasts. In many ways they are no different irrespective of the level of league. There are similar games and joustings for acknowledgements as well as peer approvals, acceptances etc

Theres a lot of JOCKying about footy clubs. Discard the veneer of professional sports, this is EGO is not a dirty word territory.

i understand egos in a room.

This list is mentally shot.

As Jackson said. Get the structure right and the mentality can be repaired. But it must be done this summer.

If theres a particular thing that sparks a worry about all this. Is Watts so fragile mentally that he needs this cerebal holding of hands.

Its no place being on a AFL ground if you are.

But then again I must admit Id like to see much of this lot under a decent coach.

It's not just Jack Watts. It's the entire list.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
