Hood - that's how I'm reading it: a diversionary tactic.

I've heard the theory that they are trying to give the Turnbull leadership bandwagon renewed momentum by raising it as an issue when it didn't need to be. But it seems more likely it is just something to divert people's attention from the Budget. If that is the aim, it was doomed to fail.

What I found remarkable is Tony choosing to defend Bolt and Jones ahead of standing by his senior minister. I suppose, where would Tony be without them? Loyal to the end. He's made a bit of a mockery of Malcolm's insistence that it is all flowers and poems behind Cabinet walls, when he's choosing to defend his old pals tweedledumb and tweedledumber before standing by Malcolm.

Nutbean I am still trying to deconstruct the latest goings on with Turnbull, Andrew Dolt and Alan Jones! Is it all a diversionary tactic to avert people's attention from the stinking turd that is Joe's budget? That is my thinking, Dolt and Jones are running interference for Tony. Malcolm is expendable and can look after himself of course. But it is a high risk strategy that could set up a permanent destabilising mindset while Malcolm is around. But gee Abbott looks more and more like Forrest Gump who somehow found himself in the top job for all the wrong reasons and committed to all the wrong policies!

I would love to be a fly on the wall when he meets Obama and the discussion turns to climate change!

this is it IMO, I've been wondering the exact same thing over the last couple of days.

I smell a conspiracy here. Not sure who be driving the bus, but pyne hasn't looked to irate with the turnbull/palmer dinner kerfuffle. almost smirking.

I sense that turnbull knows little about this episode this time around.

I also wonder if Adolt was in on the parte`.

Gentlemen and Gentleladies

Can anyone imagine how great the furore would have bin had Juliar fallen asleep during a service commemorating our war dead?

Stand by for the Murdoch Press to wheel out eight or ten journalists commiserating on how stretched he has been in his service of our nation and how carping any person would have to be who could be incapable of empathising with this man who almost singlehandedly must be charged with the huge task of fixing the Budget Emergency ( after all, the national debt will soon be 13% of GDP unless measures are taken and then, before we know it, our debt will be of the order of Great Britain's ( i.e. 48%))

Not that I allude to the possibility of nauseating double standards in those excellent servants of the truth or nothin

It's going to get to the point that George W. Bush got to in the US. Where intellectually honest conservatives jump off and the only ones left supporting him are the right wing media hacks and their gullible, xenophobic, AM radio listening followers.

History will be much kinder to Julia than Tony Abbott (or Kevin Rudd).

Well at least with today's presser with Tony and the "Canadia" president Harper, Tony has nailed his colours to the mast. He is a spuiker for the coal industry, no more, no less. At least he has come out of the closet even though he is still dribbling on about the dangers of climate change but you just wouldn't want to do anything about it, you just hope Greg Hunt can talk his way through it and it all goes away.

It's a bit like if Tony was facing a firing squad but had the opportunity to bribe the squad to use blanks, but decides to make some savings so he just manages to bribe half the firing squad. Tony would actually believe that is money well spent with a demonstrated efficiency dividend! But that is to paint him as some Forrest Gump like buffoon which was my most benevolent assesment. However in my mind he has now crossed over into the realms of real evil. I have said before this guy is a dangerous ideological force against progress. I see no reason to change my thinking. Tony is not just an embarrassment he is both ignorant and dangerous it now seems on a global scale.

At least he closed down the local car industry.

That should save some carbon emissions

And getting poor people to stop going to the doctor has a sound economic basis.

If they die sooner rather than later they will stop being a drain on the public purse. And they would have contributed to greenhouse gas emissions. They're not stupid these people. This will help us reduce emissions

Abbott no doubt thinks, like he's been taught, that this is Gods way, & we have domain over All, & can phook it all up all we like, before the Almighty returns, to show us the way, & fix all our mistakes.

So we don't need to, & shouldn't worry at all, about our frailties & failings, And just keep on, keeping on.

After all, this is a Race; just as though Uncle Tony was in Le tour de France` himself. He's in it to win it, & never mind the carnage. He's never had to clean up after himself anyway.

... never Mind. the big fella can clean it up, after Uncle Tony fails to do anything that may change things away from 'the Old Money ways' of the past 100 years. Its back to the future for the Mad'Doc', Monk...

yeah, after all the suicides when we hit a major recession _ nobody can get a job, because all we do is manage business,,, & make absolutely narda.

at least some carbon will be restored to ground. :(

who is it running the right wing Libs machine, from behind.... it's not stockdale Is It????

one of the FaceLess men... never to be seen, but will be felt by the working class.

All we are seeing is Abbott's true colours. Why did anyone think he is other than what he is ... a conservative, right-wing economic rationalist Tory?

No more 'worker's friend in a hi-vis vest' for Tony now. His right-wing ideology has emerged in this budget: trampling on the poor, sick and unfortunate, and showing himself to be the true champion of business and the rich.

Abbott said yesterday, "it's better to be hard in your first budget than your last". I would argue it's more important to be fair in all of them.

Malcolm is far too wet to the Liberals (and Bolt and Jones).

Just setting the timetable for closing down ABC News 24

IMO they'll either merge SBS & ABC, reducing the ABC's programmes, or sell the SBS to Murdochs CH-TEN-10 friends, no doubt.

Well a conspiracy theorist might think so.

But apparently the 2 1/2 hour dinner was a private meeting, so no policy matters would have been discussed.

Mr. Abbott simply wanted to meet " a distinguished Australian".

Although I must confess I am unaware that he is an Australian.

All Prime Ministers sup with Rupert - Gillard did, and so did Rudd, as will the next PM and the one after that.

I wonder why?

Please don't. Canadia was bad enough when James Brayshaw came out with it during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics - this is worse.

The only faux pas that I can remember that was worse was when George W. Bush was campaigning before his first presidency. He was approached by a Canadian Tv show and asked if he would like to wish the Canadian PM well with something or other. First of all, he couldn't remember what his name was and then he was supplied with the name but, being too dumb to realise it was an obvious fake, he repeated it. The name? Jean Poutine.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
