Mike Brady to write us a new song

Featured Replies

cough !!!

Oh, the team played fine in the year Thirty-Nine,

We're the Demons that no one can lick, lick, lick

cough

The song was first sung by Melbourne players on a trip to Hobart in 1912, and the second verse was written by Keith "Bluey" Truscott after the 1939 premiership.

Lyrics (from what I could hear)

Get Out and Have a Go

by Mike Brady

We've known those mighty moments,
those glory days of old
We have had our share of champions,
who never left the fold
When a hundred thousand hearts beat true
And passion is a given
Get out there you Melbourne boys
And show 'em that your driven
And never forget, the pride within these halls
And never take for granted, the legends on these walls
Dee's that live forever, in this mighty game we play
Demons that have left a mark, I wonder what they'd say
What would Jimmy say?
What would Barrassi say?
What would Robbie say?
What would Schwarta say?
What would Smithy say?
He was always in the know
He'd say "Get out there you Demons,
Get out and have a go"
The red and blue's a symbol,
it's a part of what we are
We've worn since we started,
and it's known near and far
When a hundred thousand voices
Echo loud across the G
They're telling you to stand up
Be what you can be
And never forget, the deeds that have been done
And never take for granted, the flags that were hard won
Those names will live forever, even bolder than today
Those mighty Demon legends, now I'd wonder what they'd say
What would Garry say?
What would Tassie say?
What would Cracker say?
What would Neitza say?
What would Barrassi say?
Purposely and slow
He'd say "Get out there you Demons"
"Get out and have a go"
So what would we all say?
Every one of us that cares
Every heart thats beating
Every dream that dares
We shout it all together, so everybody knows
We'd say "Get out there you Demons"
"Get out and have a go"
We'd say "Get out there you Demons
Get out and have a go"

Bob Dylan is literally quaking in his boots with envy at that masterpiece.

It's just a song for god's sake. If you don't like it fine, but debating its "purpose" and feeling insulted by it?

Won't be everyone's cup of tea but it's honest. The best we can hope for in the short term is for them to have a go and snag the odd win.

Worst idea in the past 5 years? Worse than the bugler?

I'm not at all musically inclined, BUT.... Does the guy only know 3 chords?

It's not a bad song but you can't fake a galvanising footy song. We have our song and if we do find something else to pin our hopes to it will come naturally.

It won't be Mike Brady or a Bugler or a special logo.

Read the story about how "We'll never walk alone" and you'll understand that Liverpool embraced the song naturally in a lot of ways and of course it's been built up over generations. That's our hope I guess.

I actually like it

Perhaps, as a temporary measure, the club could adopt another Gerry & the Pacemakers number, "It's Gonna Be Alright".

Spot On.

It's called folk music and just like 'Waltzing Matilda' it only has 3 chords.

Funnily enough 'Waltzing Matilda' never took over the Australian National Anthem, but it does get referred to as the unofficial Anthem of Australia on many occasions.

I think everyone's missing the point. It is not here to replace anything, it was not written to be used in any particular environment. It was just written for the supporters who take appreciation to it. That's it.

Or GWSs?

I actually quite like theirs.... must be the Russian in me !! lol

One of my favourites. Better the GCS, WCE, PA, Freo at the least. And up there with others as well.

The power of a song can unite people, Wed. night at the G is an example of this. Not sure if this is the right song to do that, a simpler song lyrically would be needed.

Maybe.

But we're not Liverpool, with a massive bank account, incredible international following and SUCCESS.

I only wish that the AFL would play both verses. Most Dees supporters have never heard the second verse sung and the younger generation can barely remeber the first verse, so rarely is it sung these days!

p.s. I heard Mike's song today and like it [nothing wrong with having two Club songs just in case in a few years we get sick of hearing the same one sung week after week]!

a Grand Ol' Club...

We're a Grand ol' Club, we're a High-Flyin' club

We've an emblem for me, and for you,,, an emblem of, this Team we love,,,

'Melbourne', in Red over Blue

Oh our hearts beat true of that Ol' Red & Blue

And we'll sing this song with you, (what'll we sing)

Should ol' acquaintance be forgot "look out", we're comin' for you...

Well that team played fine, back in year Thirty-Nine,,,, played like Demons, that no one could lick, lick, lick

And you'll feel us now, when nearing that Ball, with Spirit Six Six Six

Oh our hearts beat true of that Ol' Red & Blue,

And we'll sing this song with you, (what'll we sing)

Should ol' acquaintance be forgot "look out", we're comin' for you...

Can't believe people are talking about this on a Demons forum, clearly this whole thing is more about Mike Brady than MFC.

That song is pretty ordinary. Kids will laugh at it. Here is one for the young ones.

Nothing against Brady, he's done some good things IN THE PAST, but this is the most by the numbers, out of touch, pointless thing I've heard in a long long time.

I know it's not a club commissioned thing, but I really hate it. We need a new, spirited image, not more of this old fashioned meat and potatoes stuff.

It's condescending and embarrassing.

Maybe.

But we're not Liverpool, with a massive bank account, incredible international following and SUCCESS.[/quote

You forgot "owned by Americans"

*insert look to the past not the present, this sort of stuff is crap unless we are good type comments here*

Cmon the bag out schwab and stynes for this sort of thing, where is the anger and the vitriol now??? Get fired up demonland!

Okay, fine. I'll be the one do do it.

This is a stupid idea and a waste of time!

Why don't we just focus on winning games!!

We are a joke!!!

No wonder we tanked!!!!

I did find it very condescending. Most of those guys are alive and have said their piece anyway, the players don't need someone telling them to harden the [censored] up in a folk song.

The names Schwartz and Garry don't deserve to be there.

I like the idea of a song like this to play before 'It's a Grand Old Flag', and I agree that there's no point hiding from our rut, but 'go out and have a go' is the kind of thing they would have played at early 90's Swans games where noone was watching.

I'm not at all musically inclined, BUT.... Does the guy only know 3 chords?

Actually there's 5 chords in the song.

If we need a new song I would prefer it to celebrate and gloat about our successes after we have ALREADY achieved in the hopefully not to distant future. Not the time now. Kick arse first, grab a few flags and respectabilty.

It can't be worse than any of Greg Champion's shitful musical ditties about players all set to the tune of 'in the jungle, the mighty jungle'.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
