No Chance, we will get third round, Col is the great under acheiver, he doesn't get high on our B&F count, the only way we would get second round is if the AFL give us this instead of Priority pick. Considering Buddy will go for pick 19 or 20, the AFL couldn't give us 22 for Sylvia.

Id pretty much just settle for the money saved and a position freed on our list for a real 'goer'

Ok, just a quick question for you, if we get a pp, what number do you think it will be.

You would have to think if they ( Vlad ) are serious then it would be the pick before our 1st round. If they are half hearted the pick before our 2nd rounder.

If they are clever we are granted a small mini draft setup.

The tea leaves offer up nothing more Im afraid

He would get Pick 20 because the pick you receive is either before a round or 'mid-round' and that is the pick behind a team's pick.

If we were to lose Buddy Franklin it would be Pick 3, for Hawthorn it is Pick 20ish.

I expect a second round 'mid-round' pick - Pick 22ish.

So if Franklin is worth a first round pick then Sylvia is worth a second round pick? I can't agree with that. Especially when Franklin will be on 5+ years on 1 mil+ and Sylvia would be lucky to get 3 years at 500k.

I don't like a mini draft idea.

I think it should just be a pick at the start of the second round. That way it acknowledges the list is the problem but doesn't set a bad precedent. I don't want other clubs going down the path we are because it would be a bad sign for St Kilda and Bulldogs.

I can only suggest that some might be seriously overvaluing Colin if they think hes worth a 2nd round pick. His worth is on what he's accomplished , not what he might do one day

Currently on the AFL site ( its only one rating I know ) Buddy is rated 13 in the league Sylvia at 126 Now thats only shown to indicate they are worlds apart.

Franklin is being feted by any club that thinks it could afford him , will probably set a new record for his next contract. Changes and wins game off own boot.

and Sylvia is being chased by ......... ( insert sound of crickets )

dont hold your breath or get excited about any meaningful compensation here.

No one is tasting Sylvia as worth anything.

The question is what band of Free agency is he in? As one of our senior players, on probably pretty good money, with lots of experience he will be ranked in the 2nd or third tier.

1st tier gets a pick before your first pick

2nd tier before the 2nd round

3rd tier after 2nd round pick

Then again it all becomes a bit moot should we gain more than we lose in terms of FA's.

Sylvia is an Unrestricted FA

Compensation worked out according to

money, ladder position.

Strangely its worked out re money not on what he earnt, but on what his new contract is.

again any compensation is afforded to clubs who suffer a nett LOSS of players ( free agents ) only.

Chances are we will recieve nothing for Col

Look, guys, no offence but I don't pull these demands out of my rear end.

Goddard got Pick 13 as a Band 1 and I expect Franklin will be Band 1 - which is a pick BEHIND your first round pick.

The AFL will use five bands of draft selections to determine compensation. These are first round, end of first round, second round, end of second round and third round.

There are 5 Bands that mean different things to different teams.

Bands 1,3, and 5 are relative to where a team finishes and is the pick BEHIND that teams pick.

Band 1 for Hawthorn is Pick 20ish.

Band 3 for Melbourne is Pick 22ish.

The AFL is making this stuff up as they go but I expect them to give us a nudge in the right direction and claiming Sylvia is Band 3 is a way of doing that.

And again..if Col goes and someone comes..there is NO pick likely as you would think that the incoming is of at least ( hopefully much more ) value.

Those that think there will be any meaningful comp will be very disappointed Id suggest.

AFL legups will come through the folding stuff and possibly a PP or some similar freebie

If Adelaide and Hawthorn got absolutely nothing for losing Chris Knights to Richmond and Tom Murphy to Gold Coast, I can't imagine we'd get anything better than a half eaten ham sandwich for Sylvia.

Yeah, well, Pearce and Chaplin got Port Picks 29 and 30 with BAND 3 Compensation.

I expect the same.

If you think Knights and Murphy were of the same value to their sides as Sylvia is to us, then you know very little about Adelaide, Hawthorn or Melbourne.

What do you mean?

They 'Signed and Traded' Monfries in so that they could keep their 'Net' undiluted in the positive and Pearce got Band 3 and Chaplin got Band 3.

Happy days for all at Port. La la la la.

Give me Pick 22.

Lets hope we don't use it the same way as in the past and pick a LC!

we don't need to save money. We are already overpaying players with front ended contracts to meet the minimum of the cap. Plus despite the argument if whether or not he can get better or not he is in our top 22 easily, has 150 games experience and is worth keeping. Which real goer would u realistically get that would make MFC better?0

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
