    You'd hope he can have more of an impact on the contest than TJ did.

    A bit harsh. TJ's career was certainly underwhelming but his best footy around 2002 - 2005 was poetry.

    This pic exibits the exact reason why Jimmy cant be compared to Wines right now. Wines was a ready made player (pic taken pre draft) with a full preseason under his belt.

    Jimmy had a double hip operation, a shortened pre season and is 2 years behind in physical development.

    Once Jimmy gets rid of the baby fat and strengthens his core I think we will have a gun on our hands.

    I was in the pick Ollie Wines boat pre draft because I wanted someone to be ready made in our midfield.

    In hindsight I believe we made the right choice in Jimmy as his skills and execution are streets ahead of Wines.

    We just have to give him at least a couple more pre seasons to compare.

    Correct. There wasn't a recruiter in the land that would have taken Wines over Toumpas.

    I know of one club that was gobsmaked that GWS didn't take him at 2 or 3. They thought JT was 10 times the player of Jonathan O'Rourke who GWS took at 2.

    Who knows, GWS passing over JT might just have all been part of the minidraft/Viney deal???

    So How long will it take? to have him impacting games

    Wines was ready to go, but Jimmy was super impressive in my opinion today, tough conditions against the best opposition going and he stood up.

    no that's not true, it's part of a plan to develop young players so in a few years we can actually challenge for something real (a big cup)

    i woul rather have Toump the way he is now and not be as good as wines.

    but in 2-3 years Toump will be way ahead of Wines. the guys skills are a highlight to watch

    His disposal in the wet was first class. He handled it like it was dry and he as he one Melbourne player who found time and space to useit well.

    Will be a very classy player.

    Not sure if anyone has actually watched Olllie Wines play, but his disposal is atrocious. Like, really bad.

    Toumpas will be a better player, comfortably.

    How is that comment biased? It's a pretty fair point that you can't tell 10 games into their respective careers who is going to end up the better player.

    My first sentence was directed at the poster in question.

    Go watch him play for Port, the guy is a terrible kick.

    once he backs himself to take those grabs he'll be good.

    we desperately need the likes of viney and [insert draft pick(s) here] to get the ball on his hands. he's a lovely kick.

    If you'd been at the game, you would have thought that was definitely the right decision. It was bucketing down. No one had taken those all day. He went back and completed the spoil. Right decision. Rather than trying to mark it, dropping it in the slippery conditions and allowing a Geelong player to run into an open goal. It was a great decision.

    I cant believe the amount of pressure placed on these young draftees. They need time to mature and get use to the game at AFL level. I suppose it's a sign of the times, wanting everything right now. Toump will be a gun, give the lad at least a couple of seasons. It will come

    They are different types of players. It's like comparing Sidebottom with Sewell. Wines will be an important player for Port and if Jimmy keeps developing, he'll be an important contributor for us.

    I'd love Ollie Wines as well. But it's not really about Toumpas v Wines IMO - they are different players, and, in any event, we picked the more highly rated one of the two.

    We lack midfield grunt and from what I've watched of Wines he goes alright in that department. Granted that we also need players like Toumpas and considering we were assured of Viney it's logical that we chose Jimmy before Ollie.

    Still too early to call IMO but on the back of yesterdays game I feel a lot better than I did when Wines burst on to the scene at the beginning of the season.

    Having seen a photo of him today playing aginst the Cats he seems to be getting a lot bigger already and he looks very strong through the legs and hips which is a very good thing (see Ablett jr). I personally think he has the potential to be as damaging as a Griffen or Dangerfield once he gets more power through his legs. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a dramatic rise in his output next season similar to Chad Wingard this year. Very excited about this one though don't want to jinx him.

    Sincerely hope so Redleg because I have heard your comment quite times in the last six years and most of them are now playing a lot lower than the AFL.

    It's amazing how the attitude towards him has changed so much in a few weeks. Just a few rounds ago people were calling him soft and some even saying he was another dudded pick.

    I didn't see the game Saturday but from all accounts he played very well and the stats show the same. Coming along very nicely I think.

    I have no issues with Jimmy I think he is coming along well. I wish we had a half decent team so we could see Jimmy run and carry the footy a bit more. Seeing Jimmy on the run through the guts kicking to any forward on the lead would be poetry in motion.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
