FFS - we have Jimmy, please support him guys. We didn't pick Wines on basis of need and best fit, especially as we had Viney.

I agree with the first part but not necessarily the second. We didn't pick Toumpas due to needs or best fit, we picked him because there wasn't a single judge of young talent who had Wines in front of him, and that obviously included our recruitment staff.

Toumpas kicks the ball like a 18 yr old Luke Hodge, the decision was easy to make, 3clubs overlooked Wines, players that can kick like JT are priceless.

There are about four or five players at the club who don't make me have a heart attack when they get the ball in their hands. Jack Watts, Aaron Davey, Colin Garland and Jimmy Toumpas are those players. The rest need to go to an Auskick session or two.

Correct. There wasn't a recruiter in the land that would have taken Wines over Toumpas.

I know of one club that was gobsmaked that GWS didn't take him at 2 or 3. They thought JT was 10 times the player of Jonathan O'Rourke who GWS took at 2.

Who knows, GWS passing over JT might just have all been part of the minidraft/Viney deal???

I petition that the initals JT be exclusively reserved for Jack Trengove. All other players must be referred to using some other method.

Though we needed an inside (Viney) and a highly skilled runner (Toump) in the last draft, let's not pass up on Luke Dunstan this draft plz.

Plenty more quality players than Dunstan in this upcoming draft.

Taking Dunstan at 2 would be a shock to most.

Would it? I hear his form has been quite strong...

You never know, we might end up with pick 3?

We get to play the Dogs in the last game of the year now that will be the fight for position 16

Imagine if one side get done easily

Toumpas vs Wines is in the rear vision mirror.

It may have some influence on Aish vs Dunstan vs Sheed etc

Maybe but both teams have matches against GWS first. Including the dogs this week! That could make things interesting as well.

Everyone loves a bit of tanking drama!

Certainly gives our boys something to aim for though with matches against GWS and WB to come. Besides those two games our other big one is against Brisbane in Darwin. I don't expect us to win but it's an opportunity after looking pretty meek when going to Brisbane and getting Moloney steam rolled to serve them up something back. Most other games from here on are about giving us glimpses for the future. I'm glad we've got some away games so we will be a bit under the radar if things don't go to plan.

Nice kick and hits up targets but doesn't have the depth of kick that Hodge has. Dean Kent does and he has the mongrel to go with it.

It doesn't really matter if the Bullies end up below us as they will take Boyd - they need Boyd more than anything.

We don't really need Boyd, we need Scharenberg, he'd be a good fit.

Have a feeling we'll go with Kelly though, apparently we really liked him last year and were going to use our mini pick on him.

But, in saying that, Kelly is a bit thin and we don't really have the luxury of developing those types anymore.

I actually think we are in that game in Darwin if we can get a couple of players back in the next two weeks.

Brisbane may have had our measure the last couple of years but they have only won two more games.

Brisbane is IMO the test If we can beat them we have turned a corner and Craig will have proved he can get

more from this team than Neeld.

Love to be going to Darwin.

I guess that those who have played at the highest level and are now commentators, wouldn't have the same level of understanding of the game that you have.

Wines is like any first year player, he will have good games and not so good games and he will not necessarily play every minute of any game so it doesn't surprise that he will be sub or even miss a game here and there.

He is playing in a top 8 side and has played all games so far, Jimmy is playing in a [censored] side and has missed a few; I think I know who has the runs on the board so far.

BTW if you can't cope with the Wines/Toumpass comparison, don't read any of the posts that mention it, simple really.

So you're clearly another idiot who subscribes to the 'you don't know what you're talking about if you haven't played AFL before'.

One of the only benefits of a world where only AFL players could comment on football would be your absence from it.

If you wish to go down the 'he's had a better first year, therefore he's going to be a better player' route, then go for it, but history has shown that the start a player makes to their career doesn't always reflect the career overall.

I can cope with a Wines/Toumpas comparison, but not as much with a 'Wines is better than Toumpas' whinge.

So you're judging a first year players status at their club based on the fact they've started as a sub at round 13 ? You're privy to their inner sanctum, the management philosophy, training loads, etc.

Or maybe you're biased.

I'm not judging his status at all, I'm merely pointing out to those who are drooling over him that his form in the last few weeks had tapered, which may (or may not) have led to his being made the substitute (I'd say it was relevant at the least).

I'm probably biased, to an extent most on here are, but not in this regard. Clearly if you needed to pick one of the two to play in your side right now you'd pick Wines, but that doesn't mean Wines is going to be the better player, and I'm more than happy to have Toumpas on the list instead of Wines.

Scharenberg is a tall defender isn't he? Why on earth would we draft a tall back who has been nothing more than solid at the championships when we have the shitte$t midfield in the league?

It's gotta be Dunstan for me, or if we manage to pick up another solid body in trade/FA Aish or Kelly.

How is that comment biased? It's a pretty fair point that you can't tell 10 games into their respective careers who is going to end up the better player.

So you're clearly another [censored] who subscribes to the 'you don't know what you're talking about if you haven't played AFL before'.

No I'm the one who said that I think they would have more of a clue, which wouldn't be hard, than a fwit like you.

One of the only benefits of a world where only AFL players could comment on football would be your absence from it.

I think this board would benefit more without the know it all [censored] that spills from your mouth.

Tell that to Judd, Fyfe, Jonathan Brown etc.. You're obviously one who thinks(?) that if a player starts his career well it's all down hill after that.

I can cope with a Wines/Toumpas comparison, but not as much with a 'Wines is better than Toumpas' whinge.

What you can't cope with is someone having a different opinion to you; get used to it.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
