I reckon the most we could get out of the AFL would be them helping us pay out Neeld's and a few others contracts in exchange for someone from there sitting in on the appointment of the next coach.

i think that of all the available coaches, Roos did the most with the least. his teams played pretty ugly footy though from memory. ross lyon sort of stuff.

Clarkson had has been lucky enough to coach a dreamteam for most of his tenure yet has managed one flag - its hard to be confident he'd achieve much with our list.

its a bit left field but i like Ratten. when his players weren't injured (they were smashed with injuries last year) he was a pretty reasonable coach who the players seemed to play for. like neeld he focused too much on every statistic but the win/loss column, but thats a bit the modern way and i tend to think a 'modern' yet 'experienced' coach might be the best way to go...

Clarkson moved into coaching, first with Werribee in the VFL, followed by roles at St Kilda and Central District where he was a Premiership coach in 2001. In 2003 he became the midfield coach at Port Adelaide and forward coach in 2004.

He was appointed his first senior AFL coaching role at the Hawthorn Football Club for the 2005 season, when the Hawks appointed Clarkson to lead their rebuilding phase. While his side could only manage five wins in his debut season, finishing 14th, 2006 saw the side improve, winning their last four games in a row and taking them to 11th spot on the ladder. The Hawks continued to improve in 2007, winning 13 games and finishing fifth on the Premiership table. This took them into the finals, where they defeated Adelaide in the Elimination Final, before being eliminated in the Semi Final against North Melbourne.

On 13 May 2008, the Hawthorn Football Club announced that Clarkson had signed a contract until the end of 2011. In 2008, Clarkson took the Hawks to second place on the home-and-away ladder, before guiding the team to the premiership with a Grand Final victory against Geelong, a team which had lost only game during that year. In doing so, Clarkson became the first (and, as of 2011, only) coach to ever lead his sides to a Premiership in both the AFL/VFL and the SANFL.

No he built his list - and he took them from near bottom to the top and has kept them thereabouts. A great list sure - but it's his list.

No they won't, imagine what a look that would be, any time a club finds itself in the same situation in the future, and it will happen, St KIlda say hi, they will expect the same

I'm not the only person thinking it. Another untried coach could spell the end. They don't just throw cash around, they will send in their people to train/guide with ghd hope all clubs can become self sufficient.

I trust that the AFL realise we cannot make these appointments by ourselves and allow PJ to run with it. For me, we need a coach who can work a miracle, if not Paul Roos I think someone like Denis Pagan has potential. Our players need life lessons not football lessons right now, a coach who can offer wisdom and get our players out of their current mental state.

For those who are talking about wanting Roos or dangling a too good to refuse offer at coach x. Maybe consider that we are about to post a $ 2 million loss and how you intend to pay them next year. All I want is for us to this time do our due dilligence and choose the coach who we think can best motivate and develop our list. In my mind there's just as much argument to say a great recently out of the game like Simon Goodwin or Scott Burns has as much hope as a figurehead like Roos, Eade or Williams.

I said earlier on in the "Time to go Mark Neeld" thread, we should not limit ourselves to a former coach, yes I understand it is a big task and they call for experience but it does not mean another person could not do just as good a job.

Woosha is not tactically gifted never has been and has an inability to change during games. Scotty Burns and Philip Walsh I understand are the tactical brains at Meth Coast. Good win comes with big wraps but so do all potential coaches. Alan Richardson has also been around a long time and been close a few times like Hinkley some say his time has passed but you never know

Whatever we do we must have a panel who leave no stone unturned, take the time and get the process right. I am not decided either way on new or proven I just want what is best for the club

They are both extremely experienced. Both were great players. I mentioned this in another thread. How many coaches have coached premierships at 2 different clubs in the modern era? I could only think of Malthouse and Matthews. The rest have been first time coaches. Just because we have failed at choosing a good coach the last 2 times, doesn't mean we have to get an over the hilll experienced coach just for the sake of it.

Are people actually Being serious when bringing up Northeys name? I can't tell if people are joking or not.

didn't the AFL change the rules in regard to poaching assistant coaches? Does that include directors of coaching?

Bit off topic but when people ask why some of us think Neeld should go, the above is a pretty good reason why. With Clarko in 2006, while they didn't make the finals, they at least showed something! We, as supporters, don't want world beaters by year 2. Just a bit of improvement and an upside.

I note you don't have Mark Neeld on the list. I think that to be a balanced poll he would have to be included even if you don't rate him as a realistic chance.
