read cam schwabs posts on Demonland. The one that stuck out was him saying he's glad none of us are doing the recruiting. Given the recent days...he should really step down and follow prendagast.

Get rid of players who weren't up to it?

Thats a regular part of football. Sydney made more than 30 list changes over the past 5 years.

I want to know what these drastic changes are.

I.e, overhauling the leadership squad ect.

I've finally swung around.

We should sack Neeld asap ,hire the only coach left on offer .

Sack the LG.

Get Junior back-hes only 36.

Sack the board and get someone who'll send us broke again.(Maybe Ben Polis).

Send Mitch Clark away.

Train at the Junction.

and cut ourselves from the MCG again.

Anything I've left out?

You should take a note out of Voss' book: bring back Fev!!

I think letting Moloney and Rivers and Martin and Pettered and Gysberts and Bennell and Cook and Bate and Morton go for little more than peanuts is pretty drastic, especially considering all of them were replaced by Byrnes and pick 49 odd. That is fairly drastic.

Nobody would have predicted that at the end of 2011.

Neeld had a disgraceful 2012 season. Lets be blunt about that. He lost many loyal players and could not install confidence, inspire and unite the club. As a result, he had to take drastic measures, in which he has done, and I commend him for that.

Then

I was having a go at tonotopia who complains that the coach has lost the players and then commends him for delisting them.

I re-read the original reason for this thread... Its for people who view the glass as half empty and have questionable sanity.

I had prepared the following reply but it now seems irrelevant and will ultimately disintegrate into an argument of perspective/reality and I'm not bored enough for that.

Obviously people like me arent welcome here so carry on!

The preprepared argument is as follows:

I think letting Moloney and Rivers and Martin and Pettered and Gysberts and Bennell and Cook and Bate and Morton go for little more than peanuts is pretty drastic, especially considering all of them were replaced by Byrnes and pick 49 odd. That is fairly drastic.

Nobody would have predicted that at the end of 2011.

I keep seeing the argument that we let the players you have listed go for nothing...

We got what they were worth and if you want players to come in then you have to have players come out. I honestly cant dumb this down anymore

I dont like to say this but Bennell, Cook, Bate, and Morton were rubbish. Gysberts had one good year and Moloney lost interest and had an appalling season.

These actions arent drastic and I'm fairly certain most people would have been predicitng Cook, Morton and Bennell to have been delisted after this season.

Also I'd like to take you back to your original statement:

Neeld had a disgraceful 2012 season. Lets be blunt about that. He lost many loyal players and could not install confidence, inspire and unite the club. As a result, he had to take drastic measures, in which he has done, and I commend him for that.

If not for the aggressive way he has approached the trade season, and the ruthless way he has swung his sword, I would still be calling for his head.

Now, I can see that he is going to charge thru 2013, without an excuse in the world. I like that. Balls and all!

Now lets see if he can coach. If we end up bottom 4, I will again call for his head, but I am looking quite optimistically about the future. I just hope we can straightedn up a bit and back ourselves in a bit more.

Time will tell.

I have a few questions:

  • Is the delisting of the mentioned players drastic or what we let them go for drastic? You keep jumping from one to another
  • Do you realise your statement "I just hope we can... back ourselves in a bit more" and "If we end up bottom 4, I will again call for his head" is contradictory
  • Why dont you attribute any of the '12 season failures to any of the players?
  • Who would you rather have: Morton or Byrnes?
  • Why do you not attribute our current situation as a result of a long-term strategy instead of your short-term perspective and that its a result of a series of failures?

I think I remember you having a problem with this throwaway line back when he posted it.

Yeah, Cam Schwab is arrogant.

Who cares? Or do you really think that we should be maiking decisions on behalf of the club. I can vouch for a few on here including myself to make sound decisions but get real...

Yeah, I am also arrogant.

Who cares?

He was reinstated for services rendered after the debacle that was post-EnergyWatch and his tenure will be judged from here on in. He just barely survived his last contract renewal and we all hope he can be in charge of a renaissance from here on in, well at least some of us do...

There are things to remember in all this when we are looking for people to get rid of, recruiting is a team game as well.

But Cook was the under 18 All Australian CHF, in other words the best under 18 player in that position in the country, who wouldn't have taken him

Cale Morton absolutely killed as a junior, perhaps that was the problem, his growing up, the change may do him good

Bate is a 100 game AFL Player

etc etc

If you read some of the threads on the DDD&T board and some of the players mentioned, you'd probably agree with him.

First of all - nobody predicted it ? - everyone was screaming for it !!!

Letting Moloney and Rivers go and picking up Byrnes- that was FA so we let them go as per the AFL system.

Letting Petterd, Martin, Gysberts etc go - we let them go for market value which happened to be peanuts.

The writing was on the wall with Neeld from day one that dead wood was going to be cut. He made a strong statement with his dropping of our past leaders during the year so nothing he has done at seasons end was a surprise. The picks we got for our trades does not surprise. If you call long overdue change drastic then yup -its drastic. I call it long overdue change.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
