If we took him, surely he'd be playing as a forward pocket. He has never had the endurance to be a midfielder. Looks to me like a short-term prospect to add some potency to a pretty sad excuse for a forward line.

That's a very good point actually, hadn't really occurred to me. He never really played extended time forward with Port did he? 129 goals in 176 games bodes well though.

Agree. We need to recruit so as of next year we can play the structures and game style we'll be playing in 3 years. If that means some short term stop gap solutions while we work to develop a younger alternative then thats what we need t do.

The recruitment period

  • The Free Agency phase - is generally only going to deliver us player with a "lifespan" of the next 2-3 years and ready to go in 2013. Low risk, moderate reward and moderate price (no picks but lots of cash)
  • The Trade period - would ideally deliver us players with "lifespan" of 5-7 years and ready to go in 2013. Low risk, good reward but high price (i.e lose high picks and lots of cash).
  • The Draft - will provide us with players with a lifespan of 10+ years but unlikely to be ready/prime for a couple of years... High risk, high reward with moderate price (high picks).

Getting the balance right between these three elements of the recruitment period is key to our prospects in 2013 and more importantly our prospects of pulling together a premiership winning team in the next decade.

Very well said.

Important point that Rodan isn't a free agent. This could give us some options. Didn't I see somewhere that delisted players will be able to be picked up as free agents after the official FA period? I could be very wrong in that, but I swear I've seen it somewhere.

If that is the case we could grab him for free. If not, we can always pick him up in the PSD.

Reported in the Age that we're interested.

"Meanwhile, Melbourne has expressed interest in Port Adelaide midfielder David Rodan, who is likely to be cut by the Power. Rodan is not a free agent."

Goddard move to Windy Hill looks a Don deal

An aging player with three knee reconstructions who struggles to get a game at Port Adelaide.

Surely not?

If, IF, this is true then I'll tear up my membership, no, on second thoughts, I'll keep it and ask some HARD question at the AGM. Surely the recruiting department would not think that Rodent is viable at the MFC !! I'll second the above comment

What an excitable person you are.

If the club thinks that he would provide some value for the payment of nothing or next to nothing then good on them for trying to make us better and him for taking us seriously.

Why don't you just calm down and do yourself a favour - if you cannot handle 1 day of FA you may aswell stay off the computer for the next three weeks for your own sake and for the sake of the rest of us.

could he be a cheap plan B for a smaller crumbing fwd ? Once made a bit of a name for hinslef doing just that.

Still...is a perhapps odd choice. But one does get the funny feeling there will be some odd selections this year. If not odd, certainly the less obvious !!

Crumbing back too

Rodans manager on trade week radio suggested the Dees have been in contact.

The guy does have X factor... we need some of that, plus he is quick as lightning in bursts.

Can he still run at speed? I saw very little Port in 2012.

Not sure, but he can dance the [censored] out of Usher and some higher tempo stuff, so if that helps..

Alot of port supporters were furious with Primus not giving rodan a go this year after repeatdly tearing the sanfl every week.

Would add experience, pace, leadership and x factor..

plus he is a fijian brother too!! ;)

This is all true... Rodan isn't a superstar but would add something to our team that we do not have.

His injuries were behind him this year, Primus just didn't pick him.... Primus got fired.

I would be very happy to see him at the dees for nothing.

Honestly I don't mind it. Yes, he's completely past it, but who are we kidding? We need anyone who can play

I think he'd be quite handy myself. Decent crumber up forward who likes the in and under. Role player.

Picket Fence buys multiple memberships so he can tear one up every time he gets upset, that's one of the reasons we were getting record membership numbers each year.

Trouble is he doesn't quite know how to tear the plastic card and since Juice was delisted he isn't allowed to use scissors.

Groan, lets see Roger Moore might just be able to do a James Bond impersonation and he too might be of some use!!

Are we really that desperate people??

Considering we have players like Bennell and Cook on our list... yes obviously we are desperate.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
