In the search for a high powered midfield coach, who else could be available beyond williams for reasons who has already discussed on here?

Maybe someone like Gary Ayres, who has a great job at a lower level where he would have been involved in every facet of the club and tactics etc.

I would imagine its unlikely that Ratten would want the job at Melboure, but I'd have him in "in a heartbeat' myself ,as the saying goes.

He's got 'assistant' written all over him.

I know ,because he's told me, that Ayres would like another AFL job and I reckon he's more likely to get an assistants gig than he is a big one.

It is a good question, Royals contract is meant to be up, maybe we are waiting for the season to officially finish before changing appointments? I was never a huge fan with him in the backline, and our midfield has been poor, due to talent but Jones, and Grimes ect all praised him post season in speeches so maybe he is doing well? our players also praised Bailey though so you never know do you?

Good points above, personally I would hate to see Ratten in our coaching staff. Too often he got emotionally carried away, at times I'm sure it would of hindered his logical thinking. Besides list wise he had one of the best midfields yet they were too inconsistent, lacked depth, and ultimately looked for Judd or Murphy. I'm sure Gary Ayres would do a fine job... far better than Royal, he has done wonders with the Port Melbourne FC and as they are not aligned with any AFL club is a true credit to his work. Although as rpfc essentially said, how do we know we are looking for another midfield coach... it's nice to dream (^^,)

You'd hope so, the shake up of whatever combination of factors led to us having surely the worst midfield in the comp needs to be completed, and fast before our back line collectively neck themselves

Could do a lot worse than Ayres, thats for sure. Last time our midfield was good was under Ratts, I too would welcome him in a heartbeat

ah a midfield of Thompson, Johnson,Beamer and Sylvia,mixing it up with a defensive small forward called Davey....those were the days. Possibly Whiteys last good year as well.

Ayres jumped out for mine as a hhmmm I wonder too. He has been saying for 2-3 years he would like another chance and it is amazing he has not been given a chance especially by the likes of a GWS who I think would really benefit from some one of his stature and his recent coaching record at Port Melb.

yep he makes no secret of his ambition, but he also told me he'd be good to go at MFC.

I reckon like some other guys,Royal being one, his cards are marked for the big jobs.

A lot of Carlton people think Ratten is a lemon. So I guess he would be quite bitter.

I think you were the poster who said Jamar was the worst ruckman in the AFL so I don't want to defer to your judgement on this, or anything really.

It is up to the club whether Royal will go - the players say he is good apparently. I have heard that he thought Bailey was too soft on the players so I will give him the time of day.

Like 99% of the people on Demonland I have almost no idea how good Royal is as a coach.

What I do have a reasonable idea about is that our player stocks are less than wonderful particularly the mid field.

I doubt JC could have gotten a better result this year from our mid field.

One would imagine that if his services were no longer required he would be gone by now.

There is no trade value in assistant coaches.

I personally thought Ratten had the interview lined up, may have already had a job offered and locked away, and was never really interested in the GC. May not be in the league next year but he'll eye a return.

Or he went in thinking he is worth more than he is because he was an AFL coach.

I'd definitely be open to the idea of getting Ayres in as our midfield coach, and if he really does have ambition to get a big gig again then he fits the driven mould that Neeld said he wanted, that is assistants that aspire to be senior coaches. Also would be a wealth of knowlege, the only thing i'd wonder is if there'd be any bitterness to towards Craig as he replaced him at the Cows.

Most senior coaches get emotional when things get tough or competitive, in an interview he spoke about how the networks compile together all the emotional responses from coaches and how it gives a wrong impression. For the big games, or big clubs, they always have the coaches camera pointed on them and it's constantly recording with someone looking for reactions. Some coaches i've noticed are sitting in spots that the camera aren't able to see very well, possibly in response to this. I guess my point is that they (Seven) choose to air a compilation of their reactions, be they good or bad, and it can give an impression that they're always on edge.

[EDIT] Also wanted to add that assistants don't feel the pressure like senior coaches, so while he might get carried away as a senior coach, I don't think he would as an assistant.

On a side note, I was very interested to hear Craig talking about how they got someone from the military to sit in the box with them and analyse how the hierarchy works, and whether it's an organised system. Very good outside the box thinking from the Dees.

.... I think he would be worth the risk, he has been a head coach. He has now spent I think 5 years at Port they have been one of if not the best performed team over that period and I think he would be more relaxed in the role than as a head coach.

Didn't someone mention that Neeld passed comment at the B&F that there would not be any coaching changes? I can't find it anywhere, but it's stuck in the back of my mind...

That said I would have thought that if we were planning any changes that they would have been announced by now (at least describing the vacancy, if not the new appointment)

That is also my recollection Oucher.

On a side note, I was very interested to hear Craig talking about how they got someone from the military to sit in the box with them and analyse how the hierarchy works, and whether it's an organised system. Very good outside the box thinking from the Dees.

Hope he's good a ducking under flying headsets, telephones, pens and the odd punch directed at the plaster wall. All events that happen in coaching boxes.

IMO at a time when Melbourne's footy dept' are trying to do the tough things re our culture, having a youngish Ex Senior coach as an assistant at this moment would be far too big a problem,,, than a positive.

Not for me.

I like Ratten as a assistant Coach or maybe even a senior one, but the timing is wrong for us.

IMO he'd be a good fit to take over from Sheeds.

What utter rubbish. Neeld was a successful midfield coach at collingwood, Craig a successful senior coach. Do you not think they might know something about the caper ? Or do you think they sit back in their rocking chairs and let Royal do his own thing. Grow up ! Just maybe we don't yet have the cattle in there ( I don't see a Swan, Pendlebury, Watson, Ablett or Mitchell on our list), just maybe Maloney could have got a kick, just maybe there is a fair way to go.
