Hutchy and co had us taking the following in the upcoming draft.

3. Viney

4. Grundy

13. Hrovat

If we draft Grundy then i think we need to delist/trade someone from the ruck division.

I think it's a flip of the coin between Pencil and Martin.

This would make the recruitment of Grundy more feasible but I still think we need to find a stack of A & B Grade midfielders to add to our one & only in Nathan Jones. For me it is midfielders & more midfielders until our noses bleed.

TAC Phantom Draft had Nathan Hroevat at 13. Now, I love Nathan, but at 174 cm and Viney at 178 cm and Jones at 178 cm we would be the midfield midgets.

I found it very interesting that they didn't have Ben kennedy from SA in their top 21. I love Kennedy but once again he's also vertically challenged.

Did they have Toumpas at 2? You'd think GWS are pretty keen on Grundy and jeez I hope Toumpas is still there at 3/4.

"Shifter Sheahan did say that the Viney (f/s) decision was still open to conjecture. Since there's lots of discussion elsewhere, I would think we don't need to cover that ground here.

Posted

It all depends when we get Viney.

Personally, I think with Jones, Viney, Magner, Couch, Gysberts and McKenzie (maybe add Taggert) our inside mid depth isn't too awful. It just needs development.

It's our outside run, carry and delivery that is most lacking (other than key forwards).

If we miss Toumpas I think Kennedy is a must.

Posted

Honestly, if Stringer is there at 13, I would love us to grab him. I know he's yet another undersized forward/utility type, but he looks like he could be a phenomenal player. As has been mentioned above, midfield midgets is not really the way to go.

I hope we wouldn't be going that way . People like Kennedy, Pendlebury, Sewood and bigger bodied mids could make our already evident midfield disparity, even worse. This on paper seems to be a reasonable draft with plenty of decent sized mids to pick from and I wouldn't be averse to Grundy either. IMO we desperately need some stronger hard running players and bigger frames.
Posted

Phantom drafts rarely go that way. I don't think the Suns will nominate Viney, there is some quality in there. Surely the go home factor would be considered in this. Bet any money that's why we didn't take Nic Nat!

Got a feeling things will go our way this draft ... That will be a refreshing change for a Melbourne supporter.

Rolly, development might be a reasonable hope if Magner & Couch were 17 or perhaps even 19. You need to realise that if you want us to be where we need to be and that is seriously challenging for Top 4, then the inside mids from those teams are, Mitchell, Sewell, Burgoyne, Josh Kennedy, Hannaberry, Macveigh, Pendelbury, Beams, Swan, Thompson, Dangerfield & VanBerlo.

Now mate, if you think Magner, Couch and MacKenzie (jury out on Gysberts & Taggart) are going to be what we need in the future as A Grade inside mids, then one of us is seriously demented.

Let's hope it is Nathan Jones, Jack Viney plus maybe Oliver Wines & Jonathon O'Rourke at Picks 3 & 4.

Couldn't agree more, if he is still there I hope we grab him with that pick (if it hasn't been traded anyway). As for being undersized I don't really buy into heights (exc. Ruck position), say take Mat Pav he is a 192 cm MID/FWD and an absolute gun at that. I think it's likely Neeld and co. would be happy to go after the likes of Viney, Toumpas, Wines, Stringer or Hogan (U17 mini-draft) all of which are ready to step in at the AFL level... if only we could have them all :(

Burgoyne is not an inside mid, Jordie is a tagger more the like of Crowley,

I see your point but don't write off Magner completely, he should have more scope than Jones, same age same draft one has less AFL experience, the professionalism of a second preseason will do him alot of good imo.

So suns will bid for Viney?

None of this is set in stone, it's just the panels opinion. How they think the draft will pan out.

They did say it all depend on if GWS or GC bid on Viney then he will be pick 3.

Posted

I would be very happy if we get Grundy.

Young ruckmen who can actually play forward and have the body already to play round 1 don't grow on trees.

Trade Martin to the Suns at a good price to talk them into not picking Viney before us is what I think we should do.

They will need someOne to help out there young ruck man now Fraser is gone.

that you are able to function and use a computer despite your serious dementia is truly admirable and an inspiration. Your helpers must do an amazing job.

You mention 2 A grade mids from hawthorn and sydney (mitchell and sewell, kennedy and hannebry). You also mention a defender for some reason, but a simple mistake for one in your condition. mcveigh is about as genuine inside mid as matthew bate. not comparing skills only positions.

Not sure i would qualify beams or dangerfield as damaging inside mids, danger especially is most damaging on the outside.

Regardless, even if all you examples were 100% accurate you name 3 per side.

MFC A graders to be- jones, viney AND ONE OF; taggert, gysberts, magner, couch, tynan, tapscott, trengove, grimes

are you suggesting that we are incapable of developing JUST ONE of those to A grade to get to your magical 3rd inside mid which on its own will propel us to the top 4?

Alot of adelaides and sydneys success comes on the back of their OUTSIDE RUN.

It starts on the inside this is true, but the ball is then delivered to the OUTSIDE RUNNERS, who are able to link the play by breaking the lines and delivering the ball to their fowards.

Other than sam blease and nicholson (if he can clean up his disposal) there are few on our list capable of such feats and i see this as a glaring hole we could go a long way to fixing this draft.

Rolly, if you don't think Dangerfield and Beams are inside mids and you don't appreciate that when the game was in the balance Hawthorn sent Burgoyne into the centre square for the all important clearance late in the game well I think you are best to keep BUYING THE HOPE that Cameron Schwab, Craig Cameron, Barry Prendergast & Chris Connoly have been selling you for years.

Anyway, the point I was making is that Magner & Couch have absolutely no chance of making it in a Top 4 side and Mackenzie beside being a GREAT BLOKE, well let's just say I am not a Mackenzie fan because i just don't give a stuff about how great a bloke they are. I want my midfielders to win some footy and kick better than 40 metre floaters.

The fact is we have the worst list by a long way and we are acknowledged as having the worst midfield by an even greater margin. But anyway, you keep hanging on to Magner, Couch, Gysberts & Mackenzie.

MFC claim they will be hard at it over the trade/draft period, I hope they threaten GC by saying they will have a crack at Tippet and raise his price tag up 800K... if they wish to nominate for Viney that is.

I did think that comment was a bit odd, was he the player they described to play like Dusten Marten?

Got the coaches award for a third year staight under 2 coaches and came 4th or 5th in the Bluey pretty sure he is rated highly.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
