I have no problem if he says I want to coach and goes to the highest bidder but I dont want anyone at the club who really wanted to do media but the money was too good to refuse coaching. Your heart is either in it or it isnt.

Wow! I heard about 6 months ago that Ling's business interests meant that the cushy job of 6 hours on a weekend sitting on the boundary at the footy was sufficient for his fix for involvement in footy. In light of that, I'm absolutely stunned that he's turned down a 60 hour a week job.

I'd like to know what offer is going to be too good to refuse when the guy's already making quite a tidy living with a fraction of the stress of being a top level assistant coach.

He did say he would like to coach one day. Maybe he loves being involved with footy? That's a pretty good start.

Ling has very good credentials to be a coach and at this time we are talking assistant coach, not senior coach. However if he was really serious about it if it were me I would take the Carlton job as it would give an insight into one of the best coaches in the modern era, broaden his knowledge. Having said that I would love him at Melbourne and yes we should have a serious discussion with him.

You never know for certain how someone will go as a coach but if you have seen Ling address players as he did with the GWS boys and see the respect he has with current day players then chances are he will make a go of it.

Is Tim available? he would make a great assistant if he was, didn't make it as a senior coach in a basket case club but has a good knowledge of the game.

If we're looking for a new midfield coach and Ling's out of the question and Ratten is headed to Port as it sounds like could be the case, I'd be pretty keen to get Woey back!

He did good things with South Fremantle I think it was and has overlooked and young and improving Brisbane midfield.

Lets get Woey back to the club. If nothing else he'll teach them all about professional preperation for the game. Was ahead of his time was Woewodin.

A midfielder ahead of his time in training effort, known for intelligently targeting relevant and practical strength, who excelled beyond his 'natural talent'.

Then coached very successfully at the state level with East Fremantle, and has for a few years now as midfield coach at Brisbane overseen the progress of guys like Redden, Rockliff and so forth, a few of whom were later picks partly on account of fitness and commitment questions.

I'd love to have him back at the club, for all the right professional reasons, with the 'prodigal return' a bonus.

This thread is insane.

Person X, involved with football, does not become Melbourne coach, but instead chooses to do something else. Reaction from Demonland: did we go after him? Did we offer him a contract? Why didn't he accept? Why aren't we being proactive enough.

It's ridiculous.

Not everyone associated with football wants to coach. Not everyone who wants to coach will be any good as a coach. This club's job is not to ask anyone and everyone who might be a possible fit.
