I am afraid this indicates lack of understanding about baseball. Baseball is very statistic driven but its all based upon playing the percentages and applying discipline over and over again. It's strategic and long term. A necessity when playing a 162 game season, all over a massive country.

Variables you have mentioned such as weather and ground sizes are just as much a factor in baseball as they are in Football. There are big grounds, small grounds. Grounds significantly above sea level, under sea level. Suffer from Sun glare. Natual Turf, synthetic turf...it goes on and on.

Moneyball is not just about recruiting cheap players. It's about recruiting players for specific roles, so as to maximise your dollar per KPI ratio.

There is a difference in getting a player cheap with the idea they'll fill a roll, compared to getting a player cheap based on statistical analysis of what you believe the team as a whole needs to achieve to win premiership. Also a difference in getting a player cheap with the "hope" they'll be good.

As I'm not sure about Sydney's analysis of stats, I can't comment. But the key to why their recruits have been so good is due to the role they have been asked to play and culture they have develop. Roos, and now Longmire have made it simple that each player has a role to perform on game day. And they educate each player on the various roles. And hence, if a person is injured, suspended, any player can step into that role. This is something Neeld and MFC have started doing. It simplifies the game to our players, and makes them aware of their task each game.

However, if they got Mattiner et al, because they analysed how many spoils, or rebound 50s he averaged a game and they knew the total number of rebound 50s they were aiming to get from their back 6 would equal a certain amount, then I would say that has aspects of MB analysis.
