No one is safe at Melbourne

I suppose on one level its a good thing they have realised the predicament and the consequence.

But has it honestly taken them this long ???

oi vey !!!

"Rivers said the youngsters knew it was time they stood up."

my mind boggles... the youngsters ???

After reading the last two interviews that J.RIv has done I think he is one player who gets what they have to do as a team and I hope the rest get it by now.

There seems to be a bit of urgency in what Jared is saying, something I have not detected at our club in a very long time.

Jared Rivers seems to be the only senior player who has anything resembling a professional approach to the game. If he was indeed one of the players [censored] off at Schwab's over-involvement in on-field affairs, it's a testament to his character that he has been able to get over it and embrace the new set-up. The fact that he was kept in the leadership group shows this.

"The playing group has sat down to make a focus of these last 11 games."

Maybe the leadership group is starting to build up some steam.

I think you'll find Jared's statement about the youngsters was in response to a question asked by the journo. Something like: "Is it time the club got more from its highly-rated bunch of younger players?"

It certainly reads that way.

He was removed from the LG - only Jones and Grimes stayed.

Your first line is correct but it also illustrates the low bar players have to reach to be a 'senior player with a professional approach.'

He is playing better but the intimations that he didn't do all he could to get his body right a few years ago echo what I have heard and I am glad the 'penny has dropped' for him, I am.

But I am more thankful we have Grimes, Jones, Clark, Garland, and Frawley in leadership - their pennies didn't need dropping.

Just for reference on "playing for your career".

I know we have traded players still under contract - can anyone remember a "healthy" player cut from our list whilst still under contract ? (meaning the contract would have had to be paid out)

edit - if the answer to the above is no - then no player is safe except for those under contract that no other club would trade for.

Im satisfied that we read things differently ;)

"The club has given me 10 years and it's been great," Rivers said.

"I am just focusing on trying to play decent footy for the rest of the year and we will see what happens after that, but I definitely want to be a one-club player."

"I can see the light. We just need to get better quickly, or I won't be here ."

"Success is definitely what drives me because we have been in a bad patch so long."

My stomach just dropped.

My stomach just dropped.

Why? As long as he maintains his current form, Rivers is safe and will be going nowhere except possibly back into the leadership group.

"Success is definitely what drives me because we have been in a bad patch so long."

Now heres the thing....and for me it points towhat wrong with much thinking by so many playing in the red and blue

Patches are an aberation to the norm.. they are a way to overcome a small shortcoming ...for a determined period of time before a proper replacement is substituted.

Generally the notion of 'patch" and 'long" are separate. What Jared inadvertently highlights is that this has been our culture....not a patch.

There simply has to be change..... maybe its started.

That part was not quoting Rivers as using the word "youngsters"... that was the Jon Ralph's word. It is obvious that he asked a question about the "youngsters" to which Rivers responded: "It definitely takes time for those guys, but it's time now. We have had enough time to get them going,".

Oh, the players are on notice are they?

Playing for their careers now, are they?

FFS, the way the club has been going, the playing list has been in this precarious state for a couple of years running now...

There was an old ALP campaign song from the 1970's that comes to mind when mentioning list pruning at Melbourne.

He's not in the leadership group? Wow. In a way, that's even more impressive. Instead of sulking about being excluded (like some people), he's become an even better role model for the younger players. Good on him.

I think it is meant that he won't be wanted by a 2 and 20 team rather than him deciding to [censored] off...

He means he'll be shown the door. It sounds like awareness of where he is at, rather than a threat.

I interpreted it as him saying that we need to get better quickly so he can play finals before he is too old to keep playing.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
