Kicking in after behinds

Every time Collingwood had a kick in , there was a range of options, usually leading to the ball ending up in their forward 50.

In contrast, when we kicked in, no one moved to offer options. We ended up in desperate , and usually Coll had another shot for goal.

This has been going on since Steve Febey , who was our last effective kicker-in.

Is it the coaching, or the lack of skill or thought of our players?

One basic principle to which we rarely adhere ,but the top teams never fail to do, is KICK IT IN QUICKLY, before the opposition organise their zone.

I know Demonlanders think I'm ludicrously obsessed by this, but I'm convinced it's a vital and basic aspect of modern football tactics.

Dosen't help, when the umpire calls the ball back when we do have options.......almost look like the umpire was doing it on purpose?

Top teams also have one or more target options ready to go. Our kickers often scan the immediate area for 5-6 seconds before kicking to a contest.

Keep the ball OUT of Frawley's hands - terrible decision maker.

He's nervous, never rewards hard leads and takes too long.

Every little playon call ,whistle ,call back etc was designed for them-every soft free ,every crap call ,everything. Sh!t effort -sh!t job with sh!t applicants doing it .

They should be banned from listening to the media because thet think they are part of the game-it's the worst part of an otherwise good game. Please someone torture them with paper cuts and lemon juice .A thousand of them-then we are square .

It is a basic-you are right to obsess on it until it is fixed."Doing the simple things extraordinarily well" should be our focus .

Actually when Viney took over for a short while we seemed to drastically improve in this area....

i noted it was more our players don't have the capability to keep running to provide movement to kick to where as Collingwood did all day.

Our guys stand there waiting for the ball to be kicked on their head at contest.

Collingwood are well drilled and create space for each other or they run and provide more movement dragging the zone around until they find a free player.

We don't seem to be fit enough to do that.

Collingwood implemented a HUGELY effective zone that was much deeper than other sides. Really well played, we worked them out for quite a while, but when they had time - they set up really well. Very hard to break through.

They were fantastic and to be admired - Neeld knows this team and he knows how to get there. I feel buoyed by the fact that he's coaching our team.

Its been a problem for a long time and hasn't been rectified. It is something that annoys the hell out of me.

Steps to rectify this would be as follows:

1. Allow anyone to take the kickout if they see a free man and they believe he can hit the target, whether it be a Bartram, T.Mac. Too often we wait for the 'designated kicker' and throw the ball in the square which allows the opposition to man up and set up.

2. Devise some sort of system which the players can follow to create space and then break into, rather than the simple kick it to the 50 on the flanks.

3. Continually practice defensive transition from goal square to goal square.

Something that also kills me is why every team we play seem to kill us on defensive transition from their kickout on the Southern Stand wing. We get killed consistently down that wing and it has cost as too many times over the past 5 or so years.
