Depends a little on others who use compo picks but the first round would be picks 3, 4 and 12. Next pick would be 20 something...

Posted

We won't finish 16th so it doesn't matter :)

6,7,12 and 25 most likely.

Sounds optimistic. Who are the 5 teams that are going to finish below us.

Posted

Unfortunately i don't think we will finish any higher than 16th, 15th at a stretch.

There are no guarantees, and wins over GWS x2 and GC x1 will still only put us on par with where Brisbane sit currently.

Plus our percentage is woeful too.

If you look realistically at the ladder as it is and going forward, 15th is about as high as we will climb.

The earliest our mid-first rounder can possibly be is 11 because there's 10 non-finals teams to come before it. Us and the Dogs have exercised 1st round "pick after" compos. GWS has also exercised one of these picks tied to Adelaide's position. I'm tipping Melbourne and the Dogs won't make the 8 and Adelaide will. That gives us pick 13 and if the Crows stumble it'll be 14.

Thanks Old. And the round 2 pick (assuming of course it hasn't been traded) will be somewhere mid-low 20's.

Whether we are forced to take Viney at 3 or get to grab him at 20 something, that is still a healthy bounty of top end picks. (And of course hoping that Viney is at 20 odd).

But my biggest hope, is that this year is the last time for a VERY long time that we are looking at high draft picks and the number of early first round selections we have MID SEASON...............

Posted

I can't see us finishing any higher than 16th.

North, Port, Doggies and Brisbane all are three games ahead of us AND a massive amount of % which effectively means we have to get an extra win to leap frog any of them, also they have to not win again for the rest of the year.

So, let's presume we finish as is in 16th, that's picks 3 & 4. Will GCS or GWS bid for Viney? Will be interesting to see it pan out ;)

GC & GWS are the only 2 clubs who could come close to a 1st round PP performance wise you'd think but I doubt the AFL would give them considering they are starter clubs and were always going to struggle in the formative years. Based on that I doubt there will be any 1st round PPs given this year.

The new system:

“After this current expansion period, the AFL believes that the balance for special assistance under the rules was no longer right for the competition,” AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said.

“The commission accepted a recommendation that stricter conditions for any special assistance should be developed,” he said.

Priority draft selections could still be granted in future under the discretion of the commission.

Anderson said a formula would be developed that will take into account such factors as a club’s premiership points over a period of years (with greater weight to recent seasons), its percentage over a period of years as another indication of on-field competitiveness (with greater weight to recent seasons), any finals appearances in recent seasons, any premierships in recent seasons and club injury rates in each relevant season

Ppl need to forget about us getting Viney for a 20s pick as GC and GWS are already on record as saying

that they will both be bidding for Viney - and so they should!!

Can Someone confirm if we finish 16th what picks we will defs have. Im of the belief we will have pick 3,4 (scully compo) 12 and 19?

1st Round: Loser mentality

2nd Round: Handout mindset

3rd Round: Player who wants to play for Melbourne entire career and 'anticipates this will be the case'.

Are there obvious candidates for picks 1 &2 and how do they compare to Viney... Ie whats a club give up by selecting Viney .

Nothing, because we have a contract with him.

A few posters just rolled their eyes but it's true - unless we do deals we will pick him up with our first pick.

And he will slot straight into our midfield btw, not that that is relevant to this discussion.

Any club will want to make sure we don't get a huge 'leg up' by selecting Viney in the second round.

Just the way it is.

And no game of poker with the career of the teenage son of a former great is going to change that fact.

Maybe Viney is worth pick 3 anyway. its all speculation.

The 5 year contract for JV is a furphy according to Todd as it is illegal for MFC to contract an under age yet to be drafted player. JV is elligible to be drafted by another club if we don't take him with our first round pick. This would be an unlikely event with Todd having the microphone at the draft.

So the question I have is; How good is Viney Really? Is he woth pick 3 (Disregard family associations for the moment) Would he naturally be a no 3 pick? This needs to be discussed. I will admit that other than some highlight footage i have not seen him play.

As you have not seen him play I will just say - your opinion on whether he is worth Pick 3 will change when you see him play.

Mothers were complaining about his tackling since he was 13.

He is the exclamation point this club needs.

Great Post Thanks for that i will keep that close over the second half of the seasonSo JV was rated whrere in the top 50?

GWS and GC saying this mid-season is very different to calling our bluff on draft day. Hypothetically, if they DO nominate for JV, we can always say "fine you can have him" and we end up getting pick 2 instead of JV at pick 3 (assuming we finish 16th)

Kevin Sheedy is an old coot, but I doubt he's senile enough to risk losing Lachie Whitfield at pick 1 and instead get JV!

Generally he's been rated in the top 5, top 3 by some. It's fair to say he's in the top couple for mids but a lot will depend on a club's perspective, such as who a club rates a ruckman like Grundy. At this stage it appears to be reasonable to have Viney in the top 3, along with Whitfield & Stringer, but as well all know a lot can change in 5 months.

It's official (although most would have assumed).

There will be no Priority Picks allocated in the 2012 national draft.

No draft bonus for Suns

Under the new system, the AFL commission has the power to award priority picks to struggling teams at its discretion, but the League has confirmed none of its clubs would qualify for such a pick in the first year of the new scheme's operation.

Great news and with GC getting there first win this week and the dees still only on 2 wins there is still a great chance MFC will finish below GWS or GC.

Not that i like not winning but with the rest of the year being a training run no one will know were the picks will fall we could very well finish 18th or 17th.

This draft is shaping as the most important draft in the history of this club.

We are in need of the best Midfield players going forward so if we Have a chance to land Grundy we would be silly not to have a real good look.

I class ruckmen as apart of the Midfield and add to that 3 good mids in Toumpas,Viney and pick 12 Vlastin

When november comes around there is going to be some really good high end talent thrown into the mix at the MFC.

Cam Swabb said on Triple M that we will not take Viney if GWS over rate him.(Well done Cam) we will take him in the second round IMO.

Once we have another year under Neeld and co and a fit squad of Trengove,Blease,Jurruh,Clark,Davey,Sylvia,Watts,Gawn,Jamar,Gysberts and add to that a good trade or 2 and Grundy,Tompas,Viney and Vlastin the MFC will turn around alot quicker then may fans might think. This is also what Cam Swabb said yesterday that when asked when will the club play finals again. He said that our team will turn around alot quicker then the so called experts might think.

There has been a big change at this club in 2012 and at times it's bloody hard to watch.

But please dees fans give the new footy department time to show the bigger picture which is in place right now.

The MFC has spent big money in recent times so we have the best chance to compete with all the clubs in the AFL Neeld,Mission,Craig are very good at what they do.

2013 will be the start of the rise of the MFC so hold on sit back and enjoy the ride.

GO DEES

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
