Wont Jones be an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2015 as that will be his 10th season.

He played in our last finals win in 2006. One of the few remaining.

Of the Dees players that played in our last finals win, only Jamar, Jones, Davey and Sylvia remain.

Only one of those players is a leader.

Any chance we could give them a game first?

The same way we gave Cook a game?

Lets hope they don't face the same fate.

Is it correct that all players taken in the draft are automatically on a 2 year contract? If so, the debate about whether Neeld should have taken recycled players needs to take this into consideration. In other words, using Rodan as an example, the debate generally considers whether it would have been better to take an untried player in the draft at pick 80 (or whatever number would have been used) instead of Rodan. But this wouldn't take into account that a player chosen at 80 would be on the list for 2 years whereas Rodan might only be for one. The player who might otherwise be chosen at pick 80 needs, therefore, to be better than, not equal to Rodan to justify the longer contract.

I'm yet to be convinced that the strategy to recruit Rodan, Gillies, Pedersen, etc is the right one. But we need to be careful when we consider alternatives that we appreciate it's really Rodan on a one year contract versus a kid drafted in the 80s on a two year contract.

I initially thought I was right and I have had a look and because Jones was OOC after 2012 (7 years) - he was never a RFA.

A player must be OOC as a RFA before he can be OOC as a UFA. So while this may change in the future - as it stands today, the rules stipulate that we can match any offer to Jones in 2015.

He will be a RFA in 2015.

Are you sure?

Sylvia is apparently an UFA at the end of this year....don't remember him ever being a RFA.

It is more of a 'OOC after 8 years' rule rather than a RFA rule, as there was no RFA prior to last year.

Tynan and Taggert better pull their thumbs outa their asses to get another contract

It's a big year for those two along with Fitzpatrick & Davis I reckon to determine whether or not they have what it takes to make it or not.

If Jamar's form continues to go south and if as some people are saying Frawley wants out that may help Fitzpatrick & Davis. I really hope Taggert can get over his injuries and comes on cause we really need midfielders and some of what I have seen of him does look promising.

You are confused.

To get UFA (if in top 10 paid players) you have to first come out of contract after 8 years and then re-sign. Upon coming out of contract a second time after 10 years then a player becomes a UFA.

Jones had been here for 7 years and re-signed for three years, hence he will be a RFA in 2015 as that is the first time he is OOC after 8 years of service.

Sylvia was resigned for two years after 8 years of service, so he is an UFA.

Fair to say the clean out at the end of this year will be as big as last year. Looking at the 2013 uncontracted group I'm comfortable with that. Gawn and Evans will earn extensions. Manger and couch should get promoted. The rest are up in the air, but for sure there will be lot of change to our list again by 2014.

If we don't drastically improve next year I would not be one bit angry at Jones for walking. He deserves better - although I am confident he would never walk on Melbourne. I doubt there would be many that could match our offer for him anyway, he should be the number one earner at this club - full stop.

Watts will be trade bait. A good experienced midfielder would be good exchange for us.

Davey and sylvia will go. That will free up a fait bit of spending money for us.

What clubs would be likely to be interested in watts? and what players might they offer?

I agree Davey and Sylvia would be good icing on the cake at a top side, Davey has had a good career at the dees but deserves some finals action, Sylvia it's a shame he hasn't shown us more of his best but same as davey i can understand his decision but i hold hope we can keep him now he is starting to get somewhere

Posted

Doubt there will be much interest in Davey. I am suspicious that Sylvia's recent good form is driven by the fact that he needs a good year to increase his market value for free agency - probably his agent got in his ear. We could get someone ok in exchange for watts.

Posted

I'd be [censored] if Sylvia walked away from a club who's persevered with him across close to ten seasons. He's shown us very little. Glimpses. He also doesn't deserve to hold the club to ransom come contract time either.

Unfortunately that might well be the case, making it vital that we get good quality mids through free agency.

if we were to trade watts i would want a pretty decent deal or i'd be inclined to keep him on.

Watts for Bryce Gibbs?

Watts for Bryce Gibbs?

Reckon the blues might laugh at us if we offered that mate :/

Maybe Mitch Robinson would be a more realistic target in a trade for watts depending on if other clubs think he has lost interest in us, or if he is just lazy and soft

I personally hope we don't trade him, i think he has the potential to be a much better player than anything the other teams are going to offer us for him.

If the players wanted out - you could not blame them.

However, f#^k I will be [censored] (I have no doubt it will happen) if and when the likes of Sylvia, watts and even frawley go somewhere else and tear it up. As supporters it is so frustrating watching them as they have so much potential and for whatever reason they cannot pull it together for us. I feel as a club we've been patient enough, and for them to kill it playing for someone else would be icing on the bi carb ridden, bitter, bitter cake we call a footy club.

Fair to say from the list below Sellar, Rodan, Gillies and Macdonald will not be at MFC next year. Pederson was lucky to get 2 years, hopefully he can show something. Davis and Tynan better get a move on.
